An idea...
2005-06-10, 7:37 PM #1
I've got an idea for a game, and I need people who can program. Lets forget the past and forget jokes and concentrate on the future. Any one for ears?

I don't like ears.
2005-06-10, 8:58 PM #3
How about expounding on your idea to see if other programmers would share an interest in doing said game?

That would be the idea

Get it? Get it?

Oh you guys suck.

Unfortunately there's a lot more to making a game than just going "hey, let's make a game."

It involves a lot of work! A LOT! You will see that if you read Ctrl-Alt-Del. :p

P.S. watch out for ties and watermelons

I love this WoW reference.

I know, I was just making sure if any one was going to listen to me.

But you're the one with 1337 programing skills! Handling game engines so very well.

1337, I just heard of this thing. WHAT IS IT???????? AND WHAT IS ***, ROFL, LFT, WHAT ARE THOSE!???????

Well any how, I was thinking of a Massive RTS. I mean RTS game where you lead an Empire, and you capture planets, fight battles, trade, research, development, etc etc. A MMORTS. And, like all games, it should be winnable, by conquest, diplomacy, etc etc. If I got your attention so far, I'll explain with greater detail further along.

2005-06-11, 9:43 AM #11
So wait. The Massassi RPG went kaput... so you're making a massivly multiplayer game? Do you even have the RESOURCES for that?

2005-06-11, 9:45 AM #12
I'm not making it, I'm just giving the programers the resources and stuff they need. The Massassi issue was more of a learning thing as I look back to it now. I see that 1 person, alone can't do crap.

Do you mean like.. an online game through webpages? And you need PHP programmers (Or similar) to make it? A bit like http://www.planetarion.com is?

No, although it crosse my mind to promote it. I mean an MMO but is RTS, no just one or a few characters. Its a whole empire. You start from scratch and grow.

Stop doing this. Think small, not large, if you wanna make a game. Like 2d, 2 player, or tetris or something like that small. Details complicate things and you're nowhere near of the experience or knowledge to be thinking about something like this. So stop.

He's right.. start small

By the way.. what skills do you have that would help you design a game.. What can you actually contribute to it-

I can actually do the graphics, and sound editing.

Ok, why don't you try making a simple multiplayer RTS game with a small group of people, then build on that to make it MMO..

Oh, what are these "resources?" Post them.

And post your graphic and sound making skills, if you have any...

I want it to start like that, only problem is, I can't program. My Dad refuses to do anything that is not PowerBasic, which he assures me is far better than Visual Basic.

EDIT: Well here is an old gallery of mine in graphics in CGI section of a fanfilm that I was working on: http://www.freewebs.com/aoamx/swlegomovie.htm

There is a HUGE difference between knowing how to do Graphics, and knowing how to do a full fledged game. Just because you might be able to make something look shiney doesnt mean it will make the game any easier.

Learn to program. Don't just say "Oh, I can't do it, oh well." If you're going to be in the business of making games, you should know at least a little about everything, instead of just what you're doing. It helps you interact with the people whose jobs it is to program, animate, model, etc much more easily.

Besides that, programming's easy to learn, just hard to implement.

2005-06-11, 10:11 AM #23
If it was easy to learn, don't you think everyone would do it?

I hope no one hacks into your computer and steals your idea then puts a bomb in your files... again...
2005-06-11, 10:13 AM #25
No, because some people are lazy and stupid, or just don't get how it works. Almost everyone can learn how to do it. I said already it's hard to IMPLEMENT. Which is the key word there.

Any why should any programmers follow you? How would they trust you managing a game and doing your share of the work? Because you just have an "idea?" Programming a game takes time and effort, and programmers want to work for projects that will be alive. You haven't showed anything that shows you as a good leader and team member.

The only thing you showed us is that you lie, make excuses and can't face the truth.

I'm just wondering, considering that it takes large companies year to make MMORPG and RTS games, and you have a small group of people at best...

How long do you expect this to take?
2005-06-11, 10:22 AM #28
As long as it takes.

Why should they trust me? Because if I don't do my job they can just back away. For instance before they start, they can ask for a small thing for me to do, I give it to him, we do this step by step. An RTS shouldn't be too hard, since there will be no NPC or Bots. Maybe I should just stick to what I was doing with Konfuze, and since the source code of Konfuze is now released, maybe I should play around with it.

How do you know?

And we are still waiting for your skills of making graphics and sounds to be seen. Probably no one would join your "game-making group" if they don't see your work and skills first. And what are these "small things" you think they will ask you to do?

WTF is up with that last post? I already posted a link to my gallery. And you are the programers, you would know. The fact is I have a little programming experience, I made a small scrolling shooter a few years ago, it took me a week, in a program called game maker. Game maker is a mixture between many languages, and its own. www.gamemaker.nl I'll post a linkl to the game in a few minutes.

Have you ever wanted to be able to design computer games, but didn't want to spend countless hours learning how to become a programmer? Then you've come to the right place. Game Maker is a program that allows you to make exciting computer games, without the need to write a single line of code.

The guy is lying through his teeth. Download the game maker limited edition. You can actually make very simple games with out code, games like click the ball, or catch the dog. But, then we get into more complicated things. Go ahead try it.

I fail to see how something that guides you along without writing your own code qualifies you for work on a Massivley Multiplayer RTS.

I fail to see where I said this was going to help me make an MMORTS.

An RTS will be hard enough to accomplish. I mean hell, I wouldn't want to tackle one with a team of people I had never met in person, whose skill level was unknown, and whose work ethic may or may not be bad. But an MMORTS, something that brings horrific netcode and other such crap into play along with the need for a server and bandwith, would just be stupid to try.

And I don't even know that much about making games. I'm sure those who do won't even bother to POST in this thread. Start off small, show us what you've accomplished (that gallery just shows pictures. For all we know, you used models in some game, took pictures, and said the were yours.) in a small game, then maybe, maybe come back to us to start something smaller.

Big maybe.

Ok, in 2-3 weeks I will be out of school, so I'll be able to put full dedication to this, so if I'm away, I haven't left.
