I just saw Batman Begins on an I-Max screen.

Holy ****!

Amazing.

It was closer to the style of the first two movies, although with its own flavor. Very fun to watch, very intense, and at times---pretty dark for a movie based on a comic book. I'd go into more details, but I went in 100% spoiler free and I'm convinced that it increases the experience.

All I've got to say...

I'd like to see this as the beginning of a new series of movies.

I seem to remember somewhere hearing that all of the main actors signed a 3 film deal and that they already planned the second one to include the Joker.
2005-06-14, 9:23 PM #3
Why would they want to do another one with the Joker?
First, the first movie already told the story of the Joker (although, it might not be the original story). Second, who can replace Jack Nicholson, I mean honestly? He was the greatest in that movie!

Mark Hammel played the cartoon Joker's voice.

Awesomeness.

Jabba the hut could do the joker.

So could Jar Jar.

In fact, with Jar Jar you kill two birds with one stone. He's physically a joke, and metaphorically him as the joker depicts his character's usefulness in the Star Wars Saga.

possibly the BEST batman movie there is... I doubted HIGHLY that I would EVER say that after seeing 3 & 4... (i am a big Tim burton/Michael Keaton/Danny Elfman fan..) but this movie made me second guess everything. This movie has single handedly SAVED the Batman franchise... It's REALLY too close to call which I liked better, this one or the first 2.

As for the "feel" of this film, it seems more based in reality than any of the other batman movies. (heck even the first part before he was batman was REALLY AWESOME.... it didn't even need to be a batman movie at that point to be awesome.)

I was VERY impressed with this movie, it has to be one of the best movies released in the past 10 years... VERY VERY good stuff... I didn't even know they MADE movies like this anymore.

Spectacular

oh, and as for the joker remark... yes, the joker was already done, but this is a completely fresh batman story, having nothing to do with any of the other movies... where as instead of this film being "Batman 5" it's more like "Batman 2.0" or something... Take this example for instance In this movie, The Joker does not kill Bruce Wayne's parents, he has NOTHING to do with the way Bruce's parents are killed... Jack Naiper isn't even mentioned in the movie... which would make it impossible for the events of the first Batman movie to happen the way they did.... once you watch the moviem you will understand how the next movie can, and WILL have the Joker in it.

The following will not reveal information about the movie, such as what happens specifically. However a few things I wanted to point out.

It very much is based on Batman: Year One. The directors and writers said that it was not. They were filthy liars. A few notes regarding this:

Lt. Flask, the corrupt partner of Jim Gordon.
Commissioner Loeb, the corrupt boss of Jim Gordon.
The raiding of the building, in the comics Batman uses an item that he had hidden in his boot to escape the cops through flying bats.
Carmine Falcone, the head of the Gotham City crime organization.
And finally:
The final scene, with Gordon standing on the roof of the police station, and his discussion and reference to the new person who is terrorizing Gotham, exactly how Year One ended. AND A TRULY AWESOME ENDING TO THE MOVIE. People were cheering.

Great movie though. Awesome, far better than the originals, and the original was very good.
I can't think of anything to put here right now.

All of this Joker talk has me already anticipating the second film, and I haven't even seen this one yet! I'm seeing it tonight, on an I-Max screen. I've never seen an I-Max movie before. Hope I don't get dissy.

One thing I didn't like about the originals, was how they killed off main villains. I hope they don't do that with this series. The Joker kicks too much *** to die again.

generally speaking, i think its about 50/50 when talking about the main characters ( villains dying). I wish we got to see what happend to the real catwoman because at the end of batman returns, she is alive, that god awful movie called "catwoman" with that horrible actor halle barry just didnt cut it for me, michelle phifer played an excellent catwoman in batman returns. As for the new movie, i didn't read any spoilers so this should be a good story.

Looking forward to seeing this. Christian Bale is probably the best screen actor working today, and the rest of the cast is magnificent. Nolan has proved his worth as a director in the past couple of years too. It can't possibly fail.

So, what's the sequel going to be called? "Batman Begins Returns"?

I always thought the Schumacher stories were pretty much a fresh start as well though. Despite the same actors playing Alfred and Gordon, they were stylistically so different from the Burton movies. The fact that Catwoman just disappears as well, despite the tease for a sequel at the end of Batman Returns. Also, wasn't it revealed that Two Face kill Wayne's parents in Batman Forever? A complete contradiction if so.

No, it never said that Two Face killed his parents... Two face killed Robin's parents, it was kinda similar, and confusing when you hear bruce talking about it... but two face was "Harvey Dent... who was incidently a black man in the comics, as well as in the first movie (He was played by Lando ;) err... billy D williams )

dick grason.. in the movie that is... I think there was a total of 3 different robins....

"This is better than Burton. Sacrilege, you say?! Well Burton was still cartoony in many elements, he wasn't churning out the bilge of Schumacher but Burton's Batman was still over the top. As a kid this was ideal but Nolan's Batman is real. Everything in this world seems plausible and it is therefore a world that draws you in. Characters' vulnerability is that much more present. Every bruise, every scare, every concern, every emotion seems real."

"I never thought I'd really be able to envision anyone other than Michael Keaton as the definitive Batman for me but since seeing Batman Begins a couple of days ago Bale has cemented himself in the position. Perhaps Keaton will now be able to escape the spectre of Batman he hasn't truly shaken off for 13 years."

I thought it was good overall, but I hated the camera angles during the fight scenes. It was very confusing and I could hardly follow what Batman was doing specifically most of the time. I can understand its use during the silent take downs of baddies, as it fits the confusion and fear of the baddies, but not during the fight scenes toward the end. Maybe it's just me, but the film was the strongest before Bruce became Batman.

Great acting by everyone though. Can't help but be reminded of Qui Gon Jinn when Liam Neelson acts all wise and Bale's Grammaton Cleric character at certain points in the movie. Did you guys notice how Bruce tries to at least disguise his voice when he's dorning the costume?

This is a pretty dark film too. No bright neon colors or cheerful scenes in the movie.

i just got back from seeing it. it rocked! best batman movie! christian bale is the best batman. he's perfect for the character.

This was a great movie, as well as the best Batman yet. This is what I envision the character as, not what I saw in 3 and 4. The Scarecrow was suitably disturbing, and there really wasn't a weak performance to be found. Even the love story I thought was done well enough to the point where it didn't bug me (as opposed to say, the prequels.

Let's see.. dick Grayson was the first Robin. He then became Nightwing. The second Robin was about the same age as Dick when he started, but then he got shot by the Joker. The third Robin was Timothy Drake. I am not sure on the second robin's name....

Yeah I hate how Tim Burton's Batman killed off the main villain. The Joker has so much depth to him that Jack Nicholson's performance is way short of how he should have been (if you follow the comic books you'll know what I mean). Besides, Harley wouldn't have made her way into the batman universe. And what was with the Prince music in the Burton's Batman anyway?

I think Tim Roth would play a great joker, although I think Mark Hamil's voice can't be beat.

The guy who reviewed the movie in my area newspaper gave it a C+ and said it knocked back comic movies by years. He also said LotR (each of them) sucked and was a waste of time, too long, unoriginal, bad story, etc. The guy is a stupid idiot and I wish they'd fire him.

I think the people being considered for the Joker so far are Mark Hamill and Crispin Glover.

I agree.. I think he was so good because he kind of looks like the joker in real life anyways (his eyes and mouth)...Still the joker is awesome and I wouldnt mind another movie with him. Him and the Penguin are the best

Does anyone know of any soundclips of Hamill's voice for those of us who didn't watch the show, or haven't done for many years?

So we had Lando and Biggs in the first (Burton) movie, Qui-Gon in this one, and perhaps Luke as the Joker in the next one.

This post has spoilers. I don't care to type the tag every few words, so I'm just blotting out the whole things except this: If you like Batman, this is a good movie. If you don't, it's still a good movie.

When I first saw the trailer for this and they had Scarecrow saying, "It's... the Bat Man!" I thought the movie would be horrible. That ended up being one of my favorite scenes, and possibly the best acting moment in the movie (and the movie is good all around).

They explained the origin of pretty much everything and kept up the continuity throughout except for one thing that drove me nuts. The microwave weapon didn't kill the people nearby when it was activated, and it had a pretty huge range. This isn't a flaw you need a dedicated Batfanboi to point out, anyone who has ever used a microwave understands what it does to anything that contains water (vegetables, chicken, you). They could have fixed this by having a kamikaze member of the shadows set it off inside a water filtration plant or whatever away from people. That way it would still kill people via fear rather than nuking them (aside from the kamikaze) but ... oh **** it, whatever the writers want is what happens, as proven throughout the varied Batman franchise.

I loved the gritty realism and explanations for everything, I loved Scarecrow (who by the facial structure and personality I thought would become the Joker initially), I loved the choice for Gordon/Alfred, Batman was tolerable (I liked him better in American Psycho) and I really most of all loved the arguments about the difference between revenge and justice, and the morality of vigilanteism.

All in all, a good movie that should give Marvel some film-making competition (which is good, maybe both will increase in quality this way and lay waste to ****ups like Daredevil and Catwoman).

Just got back from it. It was quite good, and the casting is excellent. I've never really watched the other Batman movies or read the comics or watched the cartoons, but everything in this felt right for Batman.
2005-06-16, 11:57 PM #37
No, Scarecrow is someone else entirely. Dr Johnathon Crane. It's like making Harvey Dent or Victor Freeze into some other villian. The villians (Save for the Joker) all have names.

The Joker's name was never truly revealed. The origin was. Originally in a classic 60s Batman, they explained the origin, but it wasn't until the last scene you knew it was the Joker. In his first appearance, he was already the Joker. I don't think they ever did the story of the Red Hood in any of the old series.

Later, Alan Moore wrote The Killing Joke, which had the origin of the Joker in it. The origin was in no way tied into the storyline, just something they tossed in there. Originally he was a nice guy, worked as a chemist for some company. He thought he could make it as a stand up comedian, but wasn't making the $$ so he helped some guys pull a quick job stealing from his old chemical company. They dressed him up as The Red Hood and Batman confronted him and during the fight, he fell into the chemical vat. Somehow his wife and unborn child died. Shot in a drive bye or something, no idea.

I didn't read all the posts before mine but I just saw the film last nite and wanted to throw my two cents in.

I'm not sure that I would call this the best Batman film but it certainly did somethings better than the previous films. I do think they had to rewrite the franchise due to the mediocrity that Batman Forever, Batman and Robin, and possibly even Batman Returns introduced.

I think the first Batman film is still the best all around Batman cinematic story. This new film does the best at telling an origin. It also does a good job of making it feel like it is happening in our time by using modern cars and architecture while still having that "world of the future of the '50s" feel. I do think the retro-futuristic feel of the first Batman helps that movie attain a more timeless feel.

I think the effects were over done somewhat. The halucinogenic effects at least. And most of the fighting occured like it did in Batman Forever. Blurred. I like to be able to see the awesome moves the characters can pull off. The new Batmobile is cool but it lacks the character of the 1989 Batmobile. It looks to be a better all around performer but just doesn't have the "wow" factor for me.

Being an origin movie, and a good one at that, it was abit slow. And the action didn't get my attention as much as it should have. I'm also not a big fan of Bale as the Batman. He does a good enough job acting and all. Just after four actors playing the part, he doesn't seem the best of the bunch. Oddly enough, the one I would have least expected to pull it off, Michael Keaton, ends up being my favorite.

In conclusion, good film and worth a watch. Younger fans or those who never were very interested in any of the previous films will probably be satisfied with this cinimatic version. Fans of the Burton Batman might find this one abit lacking. Fans of the third or fourth Batman film ... I don't know what to say to you!

Yesterday the 1989 Batman was on, so I tivoed it and watched it later. As a kid, I remember thinking the film was so dark, and scary etc etc. It was easily the best Batman out of all of them. However on this viewing, I have completely changed my mind. Begins is the definitive Batman movie. The aspects of gotham/batman/wayne in 1 were taken to another level with Begins. The acting was much better, save for Nicholson, who I never get tired of. I wouldn't have his version of the Joker in a Begins trilogy, but for the original he was perfect. Keaton was decent, but as Batman he was boring. Bale inhabited the suit, the mask, and was a scary SOB. The characters seemed more fleshd out with begins. For the first four movies, it seemed to me that essentially you had to go through a learning process with each character save alfred. And of course, this movie was focused on Batman, not the villains as the first four had done. That's important, seeing as how the freaking story is about Batman. Anyways, as the week has passed since I saw the movie, I like it a little bit and more with every passing day. Going to see it again today with the family, and am actually excited about seeing it again. I love superhero movies, always have and always will. The fact that Batman begins is a terrific movie only sweetens the deal.
