Zelda's NEW LOOK
2004-05-12, 12:28 AM #41
The 2 best GC games of the year are Windwaker and Viewtiful Joe. I haven't seen a magazine give either of those games below a 9-8.5/10. I own them both they arew really fun.

REAL Zelda fans? You mean the ones that own all the zelda games, played the originals and all that? Ohhhhhhhh, like me!!! I prefer this realizstic Zelda, but Windwaker was so awesome. Nintendo KNOWS what they are doing.

Yeah, Windwaker was awesome. To be totally honest it's my favorite Zelda game, even in spite of the visual style which I dislike quite a lot. The gameplay is a huge improvement over Ocarina of Time, and the framerate is actually smooth (which is yet another major improvement over OoT).

Also, it was one of the first Zelda games to actually try to establish a plotline. The dungeon sequence is a lot different than in previous Zelda titles, where you had to do about a dozen dungeons in search of a series of similar items (Pendants, crystals, Triforce fragments, spirit stones, you name it).
It got a bit tiresome. Honestly I think the weakest part of WW is the dull crawl to collect fragments of the Triforce of Courage (which, really, did nothing but compound the inherent weakness in their sailing gameplay)

Since this new Zelda pretty obviously features an even *more* advanced combat system than that found in WW, plus it takes place on land, plus it has realistic graphics, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that they've learned from their few mistakes in WW and are now creating what is quite possibly the perfect Zelda game.

Edit: Now all we need is for it to use a beautifully-orchestrated version of the classic main theme and it'll be perfect. A little part of me feels [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif] whenever a Zelda game doesn't use the Zelda theme that I grew up with.

Kirby, that is your opinion. It is also rather idiotic to use the "real zelda fans" comment because if all you care about is graphics, most people will comment that you are not one(IMHO, true games are derived from gameplay).

I actually enjoyed the sailing in Wind Waker...cruising around was really relaxing, sunrises and sunsets were beautiful, and enemies always made me feel really vulnerable and tense until I got the hang of combat in the boat.

When I first saw WW, I wasn't impressed with the graphics. I rented it anyway to see what it was like, and seeing the graphics in action was when they won me over. This style is still the Zelda I wanted all along, however [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif] And playing as young Link in OoT was only slightly less fun than playing as an adult, IMO.

I would consider myself a Zelda fan, and I definitely don't hate Wind Waker. I think the visual style fits the game rather well. I'm not very far in the game yet, but it's been pretty fun so far, aside from the sailing part. As this is land-based, I assume it will be awesome. I just hope it doesn't have some weird gameplay dynamic like Majora's Mask...

Maybe this is Wind Waker 2. This might take place a few years after WW. Link grew up, so the graphics style took on a more mature look (not to put down the cel-shading at all. I loved it).

It looks pretty amazing, especially the detail on the character models and the animations.

The special effects are awesome too, just take a gander at the foggy forest with the light streaming down and fog and stuff--beautiful.

My only qualm is with the details on the environment. No shrubs or vegetation UT2K4 style, just flat ground grass. The environment textures also look really low res and disappointing. When will Nintendo learn to use multi-layered textures?

I'm almost wondering what second party is developing this, because Nintendo has never been really capable of pushing their technology with genuine first party stuff.

When someone mentioned the chainmail, I checked again; that is so cool. I like how the old robin hood tights are leather-looking now too.

I'm so excited. I wasn't that impressed with WW, but not for any reason specifically. Just not my thing.
