Well then, you should higher moderators that won't tolerate that kinda stuff. Like moderators for moderators. Admins for moderators.

If a moderator fails to do his/her job, remove their status :)

The problem is that as an admin or chat op, if you try to make things better by ruling with not quite an iron fist, but sternly, you are "power crazy." If you try to be nice and let things slide, you are "corrupt." It doesnt matter if you have good intentions, because no matter what you do, someone will always disagree with you and think you are doing a bad job.

You know, I don't see vulgar things and cussing in the chat so much anymore.

Maybe I'm just not on at the right time...

I'm sure a couple of years ago the chat consisted of a small number of pretty strict ops. You did something stupid, you got kicked, simple as. (Though I do remember getting away with swearing once - Flex had just announced he may die, so I think it was justified). Now it seems that half the people in there have atleast enough power to kick us minions, and do it as and when they please (right now: 35 members, 14 ops). I think when it comes to yielding ultimate power, too many cooks spoil the broth...or the chatroom...or something...

Also, people who are really leaving don't post threads like this. With the exception of Jaiph, because he's cool like that. :)

I miss Jaiph. His ban of Em was monumental. :(

maev--I really agree with you here...and that's something that should be recorded, because I can't remember saying that for a long time (except about StarCraft being the best game of all time) though your recent bout of leaving massassi might have something to do with that time period being so lengthy.

I hate these threads with a passion. Of course, that hatred is probably due to the many many many threads like these that mean absolutely nothing.

A couple years ago the average age of Massassi was what, 16 or so? More people got along, but as people get older they get agendas and such... Kinda hard to stop that.

Yeah, especially when I see them later within a month. I am like "wtf? didn't you decide to abandon us?"

If/When I leave, I'm toying with the idea of making one. I think it's more of a courtesy (s?) to make one if you're an older, well known member. That way people don't think you died, and they know how to contact you (if one so desires).

Shrug.

I agree with happydud...

I am not well known yet, but oh well :(

saves me the time of making a new thread.

You know, things have cooled down since the election. Around then things got so stupid that was think of leaving, but now things seem pretty normal to me. Less than most forums anyway.

Ah, but before you go...

Can you take a picture of yourself with a look of disappointment... you know, just like the old flex emotions threads...
2005-06-17, 9:49 PM #62
Yeah really, I say you get rid of atleast 3/4 of the ops there. Most of them are useless anyway.
2005-06-18, 12:49 AM #63
A problem with removing a large part of the ops is mostly with the usual troublemakers that arrives at #massassi once in a yellow/orange moon. If there isn't any op around to monitor the chat at that time, due to 3/4th of the ops being removed, he has free reign of #massassi. Worst still if there would be an ex-op around, which would generate the usual, melodramatic "Oh, forsooth if only <nickname> had still beeneth an opeth. Then this tragedyeth would've never occured. eth." debate.

So, to have at least one op around all the time, lots of ops are hired. Sure, we can go for a "Hire at least one op for each timezone", but then the whole op-deal becomes a bloody job. Can't have that happen either.

Frankly, as was mentioned before by heer Brian: a lose-lose situation. Strict policies leads to silly "Oh my god, he is going all power abuse in a bloody virtual chat room". Less strict policies leads to the silliness that occurs every now and then, with folks throwing all sorts of names at each other. More ops lead to the whole "Too many differing opinions", less ops can lead to troublemakers having their way.

Ach, the horrors of an anonymous community.
The answer is maybe.

I've very happy with the current array of ops at the moment- all seem to have been useful whenever problems turn up, but it's true- there seem to be a lot of them. That is because, I guarantee that at any time about 75% of them will be idling. Not because they're "lazy" or "rubbish ops who are never there", but because it's 3am in their time zone, and they're asleep, etc. A large number of selected ops ensures that there's always someone there to bring things back under control whenever something's going wrong. The temptation is, of course, to op every "respectable" member of the room, which would be silly, because that would result in approximately 95% of the people there having @s in front of their names. As far as I'm concerned, we definately don't need any more ops, but I don't think we need to start "trimming" people who are doing a good job.

Of course #massassi is different now than it was 2-3 years ago, but just as I enjoyed it when I first joined, I enjoy the chatting experience now. People change/grow up, new people join, older people move on, and only pop back sporadically, but the spirit of the community is still there.

Sorry to see you go, dear Flexor, but I can understand some of your reasoning.

Maybe not so much that they have agendas but that they actually have managed to acquire enough experience and knowledge to lay foundations for their beliefs. Some, not all.

Good point but most people use it as some last, cheap, parting shot and as a way to get attention. When I finally stop coming here it will really only be because it's a waste of time. I may not actually "stop" visiting but it's kind of sad to spend any significant ammount of time here. At least in the non-editing forums as they serve no useful purpose.

Most people who leave like such are fading out anyway, and want one final dance in the spotlight. In fact, they want it so much that some of them even leave multiple times...

Actually, m'lord, what I was meaning with that is that you're, frankly, on the same level, if not above, as heer Brian. I'm having problems keeping you two apart.
The answer is maybe.
