In case any of you are wondering, the difference between a geek and a nerd. At least, it's the version I think is most accurate.

I'm a geek... GeekSquad to be precise... *****.. >.>

But to be honest, I really am a geek. I'm much less socially inept than a nerd, but capable of achieving the same merits. *shrug*

Wow, I'm surprised by this thread. Where I live, "nerd" is considered complimentary, and "geek" is an insult. Me and my friends get a kick out of "GeekSquad" because it basically means "LoserSquad" to us.

As far as I consider it, a geek is a nerd who isn't necessarily intelligent or technically adept. So they get all the negatives of being a nerd but none of the benefits.

I wonder if this also stems from the various sub-cultures who say you wait "on line" at a movie theater for a ticket rather than "in line" (in line being the terminology I'm used to). A friend of mine is going to school in Rhode Island, and the first time he mentioned waiting "on line" for a ticket for a concert I punched him in the stomach. =P

Ok lol, this is a really sad thread. What makes you a nerd or geek is that you actually think of yourself as one.

You all should start wearing big glasses, greasing your hair back and snorting when you laugh.

I've generally used the word "nerd" to describe myself, but by the definitions I've seen here, I don't really think it's an accurate term. I certainly don't consider myself a geek, though, because that word seems to imply a lot more computer knoweldge than I'll ever have. I fear I'll never find a word to describe me.

Ah, yes: loser. The ever-trustworthy backup. :D

I have no clue. I discovered that earlier. Perhaps the evil admins are trying to crack down on 1337 sp34k.

After reading several definitions provided in the thread, at Urbandictionary, or in Freelancer's source, I am now clueless.

Nerd's supposedly have no social skills. Thus, I can't be a nerd, because I have plenty of friends and I am very social.

Geeks supposedly are outcasts who use computers as a social platform. Thus, I can't be a geek, because I don't use computers for any social purposes. Although I installed AIM on my computer and have had a screenname for years, I get on it only once or twice a month.

. . . but I love programming and politics and history and 80's music and PC FPSs (WASD 4 LIFE Y'ALL) + other stuff.

There is no difference between geek and nerd, and anyone who tries to differentiate between them is a SCHMUCK.

Really, it seems the only reason people try to separate them is to distinguish between the "cool" intellectual social outcasts and the "uncool" intellectual social outcasts. It's an attempt at turning one of the terms into a hip new subculture. This undermines the whole "social outcast" aspect.

There is a difference between geek/nerd and dork, however. A dork is someone with passionate interests that are likely to cause others to make fun of them. LARPers are a good example of dorks. There's a common misconception that dorks have no social life, but in fact they get along quite well with other dorks who have similar interests.
I'm just a little boy.

^ Wrong. ^

Geeks: Non-intelligent, but can get along with most other low-levels in the personality hierarchy.

Nerds: Very intelligent, socially incompatible with non-nerds. Mating between a nerd and a non-nerd will ALWAYS result in a child with at least two severe birth defects (i.e. the nerd brain and normal brain both try to grow, and cancel eachother out. As a result, the child is without a brain for his entire life).

Dork is a word used to recognize a geek, when he has done something with a particularly significant lack of wit. There are other definitions of the word 'dork' but it isn't a separate type of personality. In fact, there are quite a few people surnamed 'Dork' and are usually offended when the word is used as an insult. Usually.

And don't even get me started about Shmucks...
