Death is no problem... you can always bring them back as zombies...

Apparently, they have succeeded in bringing recently deceased dogs back to life by swapping the blood with a ice-cold saline chemical and applying massive ammounts of electricity. Creepy.

Apparently, they soon will be ready to test this on humans.

And seriously, that's pretty cool.

Why does the phrase "saline solution" sound familiar? Is it from a movie?
2005-06-28, 1:39 AM #9
I'm sure it's in many movies. Saline solutions are generally what are in IVs.

Poor necrophiles.

EDIT: I just discussed this in dAmn, where a freiend brought up an interesting point;

I'm seriously creeped out by the thought of this. If something dies, it should stay dead.

*Actually Shudders*
nope.

So if you or someone you loved went out some day, and some idiot decided to murder you by stabbing or shooting you... And there was a possiblity of saving your life or the life of someone you love...You wouldn't want that chance?

Done in that procedure? No.
nope.
2005-06-28, 7:59 AM #16
I would.

It's not really zombification. I'm sure it doesnt make you walk around slowly with your arms outstretched groaning and shouting "BRAAAINS!!!".

What exactly is wrong with this procedure? It's really no different than surgery, or chyrogenic freezing.

Ok, removing the blood, filling you with some solution that isn't supposed to be there, putting the blood back in then shocking you back to life from being clinically dead just doesn't seem right.

It's different from surgery because they drain your most vital fluid from you, it's not just cutting you open and tinkering with your ticker.
nope.
2005-06-28, 8:07 AM #20
psh... can't be that vital if it can be replaced ;).

But there are different types of surgery.

What about people with diabetes? What about dialysis? That's the same principle.

nope.

Not saying you're wrong or anything for feeling how you do, Just saying that there already are operations of a similar procedure performed today.
2005-06-28, 8:46 AM #26
Wow, modern day necromancers. I can't wait for the part the resuscitated corpses turn out to be possessed by evil spirits from beyond, and the scientists are killed by their creations in an ironic commentary about man and his everlasting attempt to cheat death.

Someone's been reading too much sci fi.

I love it whenever any new ground is broken by science, there's always the "aaah it's UNNATURAL!" crowd. Morbidly afraid of progress, the lot of you.

I'm not so sure of this stuff.

I'm assuming that it can only be done to bodies that have been dead for a few minutes at most. I don't want to be waking up with rigor mortis. Altogether though, this is sounding like some Herbert West stuff, and he NEVER had any success with it. So I'm staying away from it.

...wait til they try it on humans.

2005-06-28, 10:04 AM #36
They're ready to test on humans soon.. It's a promising venture. Not saying it's going to 100% work, but the chances are in its favor, that's for sure.

I just read that in the paper. The only reason I even touched the NY Post was because I saw that on the cover.

Reminded me of something I saw on this cartoon G4 was airing called "Gungrave."

[edit] the paper mentioned something no one seems to be aware of, that several (a minority, but still present) dogs were revived with severe psychological or behavioral problems.

To quote the NY Post (*shudder*):
Quote:
The Lucky ones turn out to be normal with no brain damage - although other dogs are stricken with serious physical or behavioral problems.
"We do not in any way say that every outcome is normal," Kochenak said.

And his team is now in talks with hospitals about starting trials for trauma patients.

NOTE: These are predictions, not absolute, and probally to be disputed. I'm just trying to get the aspects of some of the bad sides in. Keep in mind that every good thing can have a bad point of view, and vice versa.

Dead things should remain dead. Keeping animals alive more than they should be can cause a lot of problems, especially if we have not established colonies on foreign planets.

The population will only increase.

The natural balance of life and death will be upset.

This does not prevent the decaying of tissues, thus you will have health problems if you try to stay alive for 200+ years.

Wars will probally never cease, as both sides will be continueing raising their dead if possible.

Crime will increase, because knowing they will come back to life...means that the cops probally don't care anymore, and they will probally get away with it.

People will lose their faith in religion.

This will bring lots of suffering more than good.
