Splinter Cell DS
2005-06-29, 2:29 PM #1
The game was supposed to come out the 28th, but I guess it just came out today :( Stupid Gamestop.

So I picked up my copy and I played the training. At first your like 'How the hell do I use all these controls!', but by about half way through the first mission the controls become pretty comfortable.

The gameplay is pretty much the same as it is on the PC except with worse graphics. But for the DS this game looks freaking SEXY. I am amazed how much of the original game they were able to keep in this port. You have your night and heat vision still. Same guns and way of aiming. You pick locks, open and bash doors, interrogate people and snap their necks. Use a zip cord, jump down walls, do that cool split in a hallway between walls, climb on pipes. It's really awesome. There is even multiplayer (which I have not played yet, I just got the game :p)

Some pros:

It plays just like the computer version in just about every single way.

They put the touch screen to good use.

The graphics really show off what the DS can do.

The missions are freaking long.

Some cons:

The music is kind of bleh. I mean it's like they got the soundtrack from Chaos Theory and made it crappy for the DS. You can turn the music off if you want, but if you put it on low it still kind of adds to the game.

The framerate is some parts is a bit slow, nothing major at all, but it's there.

The camera takes some getting used to.

The DS recreates the dark locations from Splinter Cell pretty sexily(is that a word?) but sometimes it's hard to position your DS screens in the right way so that you can see everything that's going on.

I give this game 4 out of 5 stars. If you like Splinter Cell and you have a DS pick this game up.

That actually looks pretty cool. Hopefully they'll come out with it for the PSP, though I'm still kinda mad they didn't put the analog disc on the other side of the portable, would've made for easy fps'ing.

Okay I take back my comment about the music. It was just the intro music that sucked. You know that awesome song from the Chaos Theory demo? With the sexy guitar? Yeah it's playing in the lighthouse level on my DS right now, it sounds pretty damn good too :)

Also, I forgot to mention it's only text, no voice actors. But there are the bad guys screaming like "OH MA GODZ WHAT WUZ THAT?!" and "ARRRRRRRRGH"

The PC graphics are bad? I've never heard that complaint about a Splinter Cell game.

From those screenshots, it looks like they made great use of the second screen. Very interesting.

I don't think that's what he meant.

Your Mom. BUMP.

Oh yeah, by the way, you can play co-op and not just regular deathmatch/objective multiplayer. How freaking sweet is that?!

The DS actually might be better for this game. With all the buttons you needed on the other platforms, I'm not sure the PSP is up for the challenge. Besides that, the touchscreen might make for a better control system. Graphics aren't EVERYTHING you know.

Normally, I'd agree, but I went PSP instead of DS, so graphics actually are everything now.

Not to mention, the DS is just teaching people to be molesters. Yoshi Touch and Go? What the hell is that?

Of course, this is a subject for another thread...

I planned to buy the GameCube version of Pandora Tomorrow (Yes, I'll get to Chaos Theory in a minute.) and it took to damn long to come out (I waited a few weeks) so I decided to cancel and went with HL2. (Best dission I've made in a while :D) I then rented it when it came out and it..well, blew. I loved the first one, and have beat it a million times, but it just..wasn't as great at all. When Chaos Thoery came out I rented that and..still kind of disliked it, heh. Why do they keep having to screw me over like this? I don't want to touch it on the PC because I'm used to playing it on my GameCube :P. The DS one hasn't gotten very good reviews. I kind of liked some things in the GameCube version alot, just that..well they didn't do very well with graphics and sound..the grunts (mercs, baddies, whatever) had really bad facial expressions when you grabbed them, just took me out of the whole expiriance I had with Splinter Cell (one). From what you've said, it contredicts everything that GameSpot has said about it.. I just got 70 bucks from my job (First pay check, whahoo!) and now I'm thinking about getting it. I just want to know if it's got all those bad things about it..

Or touch kirby's magic paintbrush

Why do people have to go PSP OVER DS? What's wrong with owning both? I plan to eventually, if for no other reason than Animal Crossing DS.

Worst game ever. I went for the DS first for all of the old school games on the NES, SNES and N64 that are being remade or sequaled. I have no need to own a single Sony product :p Only thing Sony I own off the top of my head is 10 burnable Sony brand CDs :p

I'm confused at your question. But, all the information I know about the game is above, but if you want to know what the game looks like well here it is below. I had a shot up before but I took it down.

The 'facial animations' aren't really in the DS version. The faces are just textured boxes really. But you don't really see them much anyway. Chaos Theory on anything but PC and XBox is really a waste. Because the lighting and the graphics just can't look as good on anything else. But for the DS Splinter Cell looks damn good. All the websites have been giving it pretty "meh" reviews, because they complain about the controls and the framerate. I haven't had any control problems after the first level (You get used to it real fast) and the framerate only gets bad when you use your heat and night vision. Even then it isnt THAT bad, and you never really need to use the vision that much anyway.

While you wait for your remakes of games that have already come out, I'll be playing all said games in their original glory on the PSP.

/me huggles NES and SNES emulators on PSP.

Does it really matter? That's Lik-sang you're bashing by the way. They are the number one source of imports. I'd watch who you bash next time. It's still "Touch Kirby's Magic Paintbrush" any way you spin it. You're wrong, SAJN.

Anyways, hacking the PSP isn't illegal to my knowledge, BUT I could be wrong. If I am, millions of people are breaking the law :p

The only thing that the DS would ever be good for is this:

http://dxonds.ytmnd.com/
"Jayne, this is something the Captain has to do for himself"

"N-No it's not!"

"Oh."
2005-07-08, 11:01 PM #37
Emulators are illegal, no? If so, you still download games that are still being sold, which makes it warez, which is illegal (Unless you own the origenal games). Oh, and that kind of talk is a bannable offence at Massassi, no? Correct me if I am wrong, please. And even if millions of people have done, or do it, it's still illegal.

There's really nothing illegal about running homebrew on the PSP other than losing your warranty (not that they could prove it anyway).

The only thing that is illegal is ISO loaders. Things that will play PSP ISOs off the memory stick.
