Half Life 2 Multiplayer IS Counter Strike

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Shacknews is reporting this afternoon from E3 that Half-Life 2 multiplayer is Counter-Strike:
Half-Life 2 multiplayer is Counter-Strike on the Source engine and will be available at the same time as when Half-Life 2 ships. Counter-Strike gameplay doesn't seem to have changed much, if at all. Graphics of course, are much improved.
Stay tuned for more info!</font>

Half-Life multiplayer sucked. Such mods as Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat made it worth playing. I think this is a smart decision if it is true. Although i'd like to see DoD come with HL2 also [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif] .

It's valve retail, it's coming out for HL2. So is Battlegrounds, the only, the GREATEST, revolutionary war mod.

Damn it, when is it going to be released? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif] (stares at voucher for free HL2)

I run a dedicated server for CS, password protected, with Cheating Death. No whiners, no cheaters, no hacks. The only way CS is playable. With a good group of people, CS is a lot of fun. On normal public servers however, it's hard to find a decent game.

I think there's only just the one. But it's definitely a hoot to play, and sports some of the most realistic gameplay I'd expect. The models aren't great, the maps are decent, but with such a small community, what do you expect.

I just hope it doesn't interfere with the modifications... I hope theres a Team Fortress mod... That was the best.

Uber, you're kidding yourself if you think there was even a fraction of the people playing vanilla HL MP compared to CS.

I think valve are just acknowledging that UT2004 and the quake clones have the "run jump and fire rockets at each others heads" market tied down pretty well.

then why is http://tf2.sierra.com/ still sporting images from 1999? and the last news item is from 2001?

just face the harsh reality and cry yourself to sleep... TF2 has faded off into vaporware land... Duke Nukem Forever is more likely to be released at this point

according to sources (how reliable? the same people who would do something as not nice as steal and leak the source?)

and are they sure it was TF2 and not another TFC?

like i said if TF2 was still in development there wouldn't be over 3 years with no news at the official TF2 site

I've never liked CS. Especially the community sucks, but IMO the whole game is overrated. But if I liked that mod, I'd exactly know how I would defend it.

I like CS, it's fun if you can find a decent server with ok people (Generally, clan servers are usually quite good) or play against people you know, it's a fun game.

Going into public servers, kicking *** and then getting accused of hacking is also amusing.

There was something going around a while ago about TF2, one of the Valve guys said soon after they started working on it, they realised it was going to have to be for HL2 rather than HL, so they worked on it with that in mind.

I assume they're still intending to release it for HL2.
2004-05-14, 4:28 AM #25
Me and the three blokes I live with often have a quick CS scuffle (sometimes with bots to beef up the slaughter) - being able to shout orders to the others makes it great fun. LANage is good funnage.

Personally, I think this is a dumb decision. Just because HL1's MP was bad doesn't mean they couldn't make HL2's MP better. To make a HL2 version of another mod that is completely unrelated to Half-Life 2 is just tacky. If they included CS as just a mod and still include HL2 MP, that would be different.

I agree.

As a gamer, won't you be rather confused when, after playing SP through, you come to this CS tomfoolery instead of a proper MP?

I couldn't be happier, because Counter Strike is the best MP game I have ever played, followed closely by NWN. Why? Forget about the community for a second, and realize that it is one of the most well balanced games out there, with excellent flow and gameplay. Why does everyone hate CS so much? It's clearly the best competitive video game in the world right now...

EDIT: Not to mention that its a spectacular achievement, for something that was once a community based-mod...

2004-05-15, 6:08 AM #30
Even though it's sort of a letdown that HL2 won't be sporting it's OWN version of multiplayer, I'm happy with CS.

CS was a fun and addictive game, it's letdown was the community. CS looked awesome in the new E3 movie, and CS ties in with HL 2 anyway, the squad based shooter part that is.

But anyway, it's not like there isn't going to be hundreds of MP mods released satisfying your every MP desire anyway.

If anyone knows where to find video or screenshots of CS on the Source engine, I'd really appreciate it if you'd link to it.
2004-05-15, 7:34 AM #32
It's really nothing impressive. There's a video which shows an improved version of Aztec, which has improved water effects, weather effects, and some improved architecture. The animations for the weapons (reloading, firing, etc.) are all the same. Worst of all the hands in first-person look completely horrid, which makes no sense seeing as the original CS hands looked fairly nice in my opinion. You can get the 700MB demo off of Fileplanet, which contains about 2 mins of CS Source footage, or there is a smaller video file, but I forget where that was located.

I'm pretty sure those were all temporary. The CS video can be downloaded from gametrailers.com.

Thanks Thrawn. It LOOKS AWESOME!! I'd prefer if they left CS with exactly the same gameplay, because its pretty much perfect anyways... Whenever they change things, I end up disliking it. IE, nerfed AWPS. Really stupid [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

Because it is so laughable unrealistic, especially how most gamers insist on playing it. AWP not having a scope wobble and being completely accurate while standing makes the gun overpowered and being forced to burst fire with every gun, even when only a foot away, is dumb. The game also has a flashy action feel to it. That is a really bad theme for this game. It really should be more serious like America's Army or Rainbow Six. Instead, it's counter-terrorists meets a John Woo film. Not only that, the game is EXTREMELY repetitive. All you do is simply just kill the enemy over and over and repeat every five minutes. Sure, most games can be just a repetitive (such as DoD) but at least those games don't force you to repeat in 5-minute rounds. Games like America's Army and Day of Defeat are FAR better than CS.

I think the AWP is perfectly balanced at 4750$. The ammo is expensive, and most players invest in a secondary weapon. If you miss the first shot and the guy sees you, you're finished. If the guy gets a headshot off before you line him up and fire, you're finished. It's meant to be a powerful weapon anyways. If it had wobble, you would not see a single pro using it.

Sure, it isn't realistic, but that isn't always what I look for in a game. If it was realistic, what would seperate it from Rainbow 6, or AA? I don't think repetition is an issue when there are as many CS maps as there are, and when you are playing it as the tactical squad based game it is. What makes it more repetitive than AA, or any other MP game?

I can guarantee that TF2 is being worked on. It's definitely coming out, probably will be announced just after HL2 comes out, or something like that. I forget exactly what was said.

I agree that they should have left the HL2 multiplayer as HL2 multiplayer and not CS, but either way, you'e still going to get tons of mods and stuff, I'm sure. If only it was DoD instead. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]
