Foods that help your arteries?
2005-07-04, 10:38 AM #1
Yeah, well, as I'm getting older, I've become increasingly aware of the importance of a healthy heart...Which brings to mind somethign I've heard, but never known fully about..

We all know vegetables and a lot of exercise are the two main keys to a healthy heart..And we also know that some foods CAN help to unclog your arteries in your heart..

My question to you guys is...Which foods exactly, are the ones that help to do this? Which foods, vegetables, etc. specifically can you eat that either unclog or help to unclog your arteries?

You should take advice from a diet expert, and not a bunch of people over the internet.

Red meat with lots of fat is supposedly good.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

Diet experts use the internet too.

Also: a lot of people on here use certain diets and are rather well versed in the food departments and what each food and common enzyme/chemical/compound in foods does for you. Really, that argument just doesn't stand for anything but a doctor (since as far as I know we have no doctors on Massasi)

I'm only looking for ideas on which foods I should get when I go shopping next. I'm sure, although not as fully knowledgeable as a diet expert, people here can tell which foods can help.

All I know is that when I was eating both meat and veggies, I usually get tired after each meal...and my blood felt..."unclean"? I don't know how to explain it. I also got a lot of acne. And I seemed to be only gaining weight.

Now that I don't eat meat, I am energized after I eat, I have like no acne anymore, and my insides feell..."good". I don't know how to describe that part, that's the hardest part to describe...but it's the most exciting for me. I am also more focused and alert. I have no trouble sleeping, and now that I'm a health freak I lose weight and gain muscel. (I go to the gym a lot now adays...)

Americans eat more than their recomended amount of meat. This is probally why so many people have health problems. If you just cut back on your portion size (have about a peice a meat about the size of your fist) you would be good.

There's lots of things you can try though. You can make thousands of recipies that can help lower heart problems. If you just eat more fish and vegetables instead of meat, or replace meat with tofu or "meatless" meat (in case you can't stay away from that steak or hamburger) you should be fine. Fish has a special iodine in it that can help your body, and vegetables can supply you with your recommended dietary minerals and vitamons.

Lots of fish and lots of vegitables and fresh fruit.

There's a lot more to having a healthy heart than just having clear ateries, but if that's what worrying you eat tomatoes.

Not to much fish or you'll turn into a thermometer.
Think while it's still legal.

You know damn well everyone here is an expert in everything, and thats why you can't take anything said here with a grain of salt.
2005-07-04, 11:00 AM #12
Because Massassians use Google.

Another important thing: LOWER YOUR SODIUM INTAKE. When you have a stroke or something heart related, the doctors will tell you not to eat foods with extra salt on it.

That's only a danger with large, higher-up-the-foodchain fish really, like Tuna, Swordfish, etc.

[edit]Would you eat a rectal thermometer?!

I would.

I consider my body and myself in fantastic shape.. For these reasons

1. I work out daily (weight lifting)
2. I swim daily
3. I run at least 15 minutes daily
4. I train myself in martial arts
5. I never get pimples and zits (rarely ever did, but now that I am older, I get one every 5 or 6 months, and that's it)

I eat meats a lot, I mean a lot. Usually every day or every other day I have some sort of meat aside from chicken. The only thing I've got to do now is eat more vegetables and fruits,

and thanks ****loads for the replies already :)
2005-07-04, 11:07 AM #15
That's good to hear all of that too. Suprinsingly, I do the exact same things you do. The thing is, you just have to eat healthy too. :)
2005-07-04, 11:10 AM #16
Yeah..That's been very hard. ever since I was a kid we ate out at least 2 or three times a week..When I say "I was raised off junk food" I literally mean it.

That hardly has anything to due with how healthy your are, Well, maybe a little bit, but it's genetic more than anything else. Heart disease is the same way. If you have a history of heart disease in your family, you need to be a lot more conscious about your diet, eating food low in fat and cholesterol. It's the cholseterol than clogs up the arteries.

I go out to eat usually once every 3 months or so. It's kinda good in away because I'm a vegan, and most resturants don't support that. :)

Now every place is raising portion sizes dramatically. Health experts and dietitions suggest going out once a year, if even that.

Healthy food + your healthy workout = success.

Two or three times a week? Dude, with my aunt and uncle, on weekends it's 2 or three times a DAY and during the week it's usually at least 3 or 4 times. You weren't raised off of junkfood, you were just privileged :p

Yeah, as far as I know, only one person has died from a heart attack in my family, and that was my one grandfather. Everyone else died of an extreme condition of cancer. My father is diabetic however, but my doctor at my physical said that based on my activities I shouldn't be too worried about the possibility of getting it yet.

And I agree with anovis.

He responded to that in my report of becoming a vegetarian. Scientist have found that certain foods can make you bear zits, such as chocolate or meat.

I think...I can't remeber if it's a rumor still or if they proven it yet.

When I said I don't eat meat anymore and didn't get zits, he was just telling me that this isn't a problem :(

Ou can eat out plenty if you go to restaurants that serve healthy food or order healthy items from the menu, but it's true that many places don't have too mnay healthy options.

Cooked tomatoes are very good for you. They actually get more nutritious when they are cooked.

Last time I went to McDonalds or as you damn kids say "MICKEY D'S OMG!' was like 3 or 4 years ago.

Interesting enough, this fact alone means you're more likely to face heart problems later in life.

Sure. Males who suffer from acne during their teenage years tend to do so because of a rather high testosterone level. That high testosterone level tends to decrease their chances of heart related problems later in life.

I know for fact that fast food is very bad for you.

Take the case of my grandfather on my dad's side. He was 99 when he died, and he smoked like a chimney for 60 years (no cancer) he drank, ate rare meat for every meal, and did everything else and was fine for most of his life. Considering how he lived, he was damn near indestructable. However, in the last year, he got into the habit of eating 2 big macs every day, and that's when it all went to hell. He lived through everything else, but fast food is eventually what did the most to kill him.

1) He was NINETY NINE.

2) I like how you're now an official MD in the field of what exactly did kill him.

3) Fast food is obviously bad for you--I thought the nutrition charts, Supersize Me! and other such sources already confirmed this for us.

My point is, it suddenly got worse really fast when he started eating fast food all the time.

Or maybe he was dying. You know, at 99. When the average male life span is somewhere in the early 70s. Think about it.

*If you want to stay healthy, don't overeat on the fast food.

I'm not going to bother reading the rest of the thread, but I would highly recommend that you make an appointment to see a nutritionist, if you're serious about eating healthy.

I'd like to see a source of information for that. How does it GAIN nutrients when you boil the piss out of it, releasing a lot of its juices into the water and water vapor? I could see chemical reactions if only there were other substances that could react with the tomatoe. Cooking foods reduces nutrients. All foods. Anything. Meat, anything.

Rubbish! Such an urban legend. Diet has no effect on acne, nor does sweat, another popular myth. Nor masturbating or any other silly wives tales thought up to make kids stop doing certain things.

Acne is caused by bacteria (except blackheads which are non-inflammitory and not technically acne I believe), genetics has a large influence as well. Personal hygene actually has less of an effect than most people think - washing your face six times a day probably won't help more than washing it just once. The increased irritation can even make it worse.

As for the original post...foods low in cholesterol (there's a good kind and a bad kind, I forget which is which), low in sodium (high blood pressure sucks, trust me). Of course you probably knew that, and are looking for foods that have a positive influence. Whole grain is supposed to help I think, hence all those Cheerios commercials you see.
