3 years in Shorin Ryu karate, 4 years in a modern, friendly version of kajukenpo (formerly known as the most violent martial art ever, founded by Sensei "the lesson's not over until the mats are drenched in blood" Emperado. )

Are you ready for you life to be filled with pain and suffering, not only onto you but to those who love you? Is thou yet pass a fool, and wish to confront immortal darkness? Or have you been so filled up with your Debate World Topics forum that you will never see the light colors of your forum again?

Are you ready to bow?

Are you prepared to fall, young grasshopper?

Are you willing to die?

Are you set for a duel?

I took Karate for a few years in middle and high school, but it was no contact/sparring, so I didn't like it all that much.

Nearly three years of Jeet Kune Do, and two years of Kali/Esrima, and Savate (as well as an occasional Krav Maga class here and there).
I'm just curious, how did you find an instructor for that, did you want to study JKD and just ask around martial arts schools if they have an instructor of this style, or did you just happen upon the style?

I'm interested in learning.

I'm sure JKD spreaded around a bit, but they more deal in the west coast.

I lucked out and discovered that Sifu Chris Kent lives in my area. Apparently Lee's widow lives out here and convinced him to move here. Through him I also learned the Kali/Escrima and the Savate. The Krav Maga lessons are provided from an instructor my friend goes to occasionally.

So, I suppose I can't offer much help, it was really luck behind me finding Sifu Kent. I would just look around. You have to be careful though, there are plenty of schools that say they're teaching JKD but are really teaching just a modified Wing Chun, or Kenpo, sometimes Muai Thai. Ask how much of their teachings is based on Jun Fan Gung Fu, it should be mostly based on that system (depends on if the Sifu is a JKD Concepts or Tradition instructor).

You forgot the entire aspect of the system that teaches you how to handle a situation unarmed.

I've done Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for about the last half a year or so. Great fun! But it just takes so bloody long to advance in belts. The Gracie's and most who studied directly under them won't even advance you from white to blue belt until after a year of studying! But you sure do learn a lot in that year. :)
Life is beautiful.
