Does every American film made recently suck?

Or is it just the ones I chose to watch?

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
Dissapointed. Hugely.
It's as if George Lucas didn't even TRY with this one.
I use Samuel L. Jackson as evidence of that--he's MUCH too good of an actor for that to have been his polished performance. It seemed like Lucas shot the entire thing in a series of one-take shoots, and then only used the editing room to edit his (admittedly good) cgi work in. The plot consisted entirely of Stuff I Already Knew, except for the part about communicating with Qui-Gonn (which was a mistake, in my mind), and the part about killing the Jedi younglings (which was NOT). C'mon, Lucas, throw us a curveball every now and again.

Star Wars III wasn't that bad. So go away.

Sin City

Why is it that in order to be gritty, a movie has to be either entirely shot in shadow, or use a green lens filter? The heroes might as well have been knights or cowboys, for all their character depth, as well. I was dissapointed by this one, too, for not living up to the press.

Okay, yeah you really DO suck. Sin City was one of the best movie I think I've ever seen. I'm not even kidding. It was HOLYCRAPOMFGPANTSARETIGHT good.

Look, I know Episode II wasn't that bad. It doesn't deserve all my criticism. But it doesIn't deserve all the praise it garnered, either.

It was a good Action film. I went in expecting a film noir, because that's what I heard it advertized primarily as.

It was both. The script was practically taken word for word from the comic book in most parts.

I never read the comics, sorry.

Now, Kung-Fu Hustle lived up to all my expectations. ALL of them. Sin City was fun, but it revolved entirely around a couple of good people consistantly doing the right thing. Except the prostitute-eating cannibal, the villains seemed to all be put in merely as a way of setting up obstacles for the heroes to inevitably triumph over. My friends had described this movie to me before I saw it, so I had hoped for something different; a look into a world where evil wins, consistantly. The heroes died in the movie, sure. But they were not defeated. I thought this was going to be more Orwellian. So I was dissapointed.

I HAVE seen a good movie recently. It was called Kung-Fu Hustle, and it was made in the People's Republic of China. I kept wondering why America didn't produce comedies that funny. Watch it.

Good guy triumphs over Bad guy. That's what usually happens in comics and movies.

I mean if there was no bad guy what would the good guy do?

Dude, if the movie isn't how YOU want it, that doesn't make it bad...
Nothing to see here, move along.

Um...

1. The plot has been known basically since 1983. Bad stuff happens, Anakin somehow turns into Darth Vader, jedi die. There wasn't anything Lucas could do that was NEW to the story, aside from telling the story itself, which is what he did, very nicely.

2. The part communicating with qui-gon HAD to be put in because it has to explain the abilities both Yoda and Obi-Wan learned about how to maintain your spirit after you pass on into the living force.

Stop analyzing movies so much, watch them, and enjoy them. That's all Star Wars is meant to be, entertainment. Not soemthing that HAS to be perfect to your every needs.

Doesn't Lucas live in Europe?

How the hell could Sin City be Orwellian. Maybe you shouldn't EXPECT anything of movies, and instead go in with an open mind. I find you enjoy a lot more movies that way. Not only that, but you've bashed two of the greatest movies to come out this year.

I think you need better taste in movies.

I don't think so, he just spent a ton of money expanding the Skywalker Ranch.

Your problem is that you go to movies expecting something, and when you don't see that you won't give the movie a chance for what it really is. You just stay dissappointed that it wasn't what you expected.

What's wrong with War of the Worlds? Batman Begins? Land of the Dead? Mr. and Mrs. Smith was pretty good, from what I hear (haven't had the opportunity to see it).

War of the Worlds was a complete disappointment for me. Batman Begins and Sin City are my highlights for this year's films. I can't say anything for Mr. and Mrs. Smith because I haven't seen it, but all my friends seemed to enjoy it immensely.

WotW was the only movie that disappointed me, probably because I can pretty much judge a bad movie nowadays (especially in the summer season.)

Movies I saw this year that I enjoyed:
- Episode III
- Sin City
- Batman Begins
- Cinderella Man
- Crash
- Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Episode III and Batman Begins were good mainstream movies. If you're after something a little more arthouse, check out Crash.

Hitchhiker's Guide also rocked, but that was more of a British thing.

Yeah, this has been a good movie year. As opposed to, say, 2 years ago, 5 years ago.

Holy crap, I can't believe I forgot Crash. Yes, Crash. Oh, God. There were so many emotional moments, and the way the stories and characters tied in...hot damn, it was too underrated.

TimeWolf: what exactly about War of the Worlds did you dislike?

Yeah, seriously. Two parts of the movie had me on the edge of my seat, and that rarely happens. Paul Haggis effectively created a film where you can get every possible emotional reaction out of an audience.

Well, he got the emotional reaction out of my friend and me. But when the Russian shot the girl , and they had that huge gap of silence, two high schoolers decided to strike up a conversation about what happened at school that day.

Umm...No. War of the Worlds, Sin City, Star Wars: Episode III, Batman Begins, they're all great movies in my opinion. So to answer your thread title's question: No.

I thought he was an Arab? But yeah, that scene really got to me, especially when it had such a buildup and you saw it coming. The other one that got me was the car crash and fire .

Collateral is the best movie I've seen since it was in theatres, and I've seen all movies in theatres after it.
2005-07-13, 10:42 PM #37
Collateral was probably my favorite film of last summer, although I really liked The Bourne Supremacy. I'm kind of biased towards Mann though, since I love all his films (save Manhunter, which I haven't seen all the way through before.)

Ooh, opinions.

Anyhow, I liked EP3 more than the prequels or even more than RotJ. Don't know about these other movies.

But yeah, movies in general have quite much sucked lately.
