I don't mind them, but they can be an annoyance.

I just checked the CP, they're not turned on.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

I don't think massassi would look right with avatar's.. I like the cleaness to the boards anyway.

Don't get me wrong, I don't WANT avatars (really dislike the things), I just find this amusing that Brian has one in his profile, and figured I'd point out this in-joke before someone else did...

There's no talk or anything of them being turned on. For the opponents: yay! For the proponents: :(

It's actually part of his title rather than an actual avatar...

Dont know why it only shows up in his profile though.

I guess it'll be okay next to our name and post count, but I absolutly hate them in sigs.

But Massassi wouldn't feel right with them.

I agree. Massassi has been avatar-free forever, so to change it now would be weird.

Anyone who would be against avatars: I am worried about your intelligence. You can turn them OFF if you don't want them. There is no logically-defensible reason not to have them.

Edit: in fact, let me put it this way: If you don't want avatars, don't turn them ON.

See? This has been said many times but people still don't seem to know. Heck, avatar display can default to OFF, and everyone would win.

True as that may be, I personally feel the imposed limitations on avatars and signatures give Massassi a feeling of class. Couple that with the green color scheme and the hex postcounts, and Massassi is the kind of place I am proud to visit, and happy to read.

That’s just my 2 cents...

Yeah, avatars and the possible sig pics could turn Massassi into the messy look of Lucasforums.

Keep it simple and clean.

Thrawn: Maybe it's because people see the word 'avatar' and then that triggers a switch in their brains that causes them to stop reading immediately and post whatever they think of avatars? I don't know, it's my only working theory so far...

Thrawn[numbers], you might be missing the point. Yes, you could disable the avatars if you did not like them, but by not offering avatars at all you are making a statement that this forum is not about the childish need for trendy iconic identifiers.

This is especially important on the rare occasion that someone new stumbles across the forum, they many not know the avatars can (and are likely almost unanimously) turned off, and they may get the wrong idea of Massassi. Overall, I think it is simply a matter of content and class.

I would propose that Brian has it right, if you really want an avatar, your user profile page is a very acceptable place to have it, and I for one would support the addition of avatars on the profile page and only the profile page. This was if you really want to show off your trendy iconic identifier, you can, but the rest of us don’t half to put up with it, and it will not change the overall look, feel, and style of Massassi, that to its own credit it has managed to maintain over the years.

No, but might say I could sleep better at night knowing that Massassians are going around representing themselves with their words and actions and not with some 64x64 gif they photoshopped together, probably from some anime.

Ultimately, no, it is not important. And If public opinion Is enough to sway Brian and the admins to add avatars, I wont necessarily be upset. Ill just turn them off. To me, avatars are just not what Massassi is about.

An acceptable proposition.

Avatars still don’t quite fit Massassi in my mind, but if that is what the majority wants, sure.

Except in order to view avatars, you would have to select an option in the CP as Yoshi said. Argument debunked.

How is an avatar any less of a "trendy iconic identifier" than a username? A pseudonym, if you like. "Darth DragonballZ" "PowerJedi24234345" "1337Gamer22." These do no more to represent a person than an avatar does. And some of us have artistic skills that we like to be able to display. ;)

This has been addressed. Have avatars DEFAULT to off, so that if you want to see them you VOLUNTARILY turn them ON. (I see this has again been addressed several times while I was writing this, oopsie)

Also: Have you seen the political threads recently? Massassi isn't "classy." :p You want classy, try Truthandbeautybombs.com--forum for Daily Dinosaur Comics and Perry Bible Fellowship, among others. Everyone is smart, everyone is polite and civil to one another, and there are next to no forum rules. It's practically anarchy over there. They never insult each other, they never yell at each other. And guess what? They have avatars! :p

Well guess what guys, avatars won't even be shown even if I open the CP and "flick the switch." I talked to Brian (I was curious about this too) and he says he meddled with avatars earlier but found out that the actual HTML dealing with avatars isn't present. So avatars have had a proverbial vasectomy (tubal ligation for our female members).

Username's are an indentifier, but In my experiance they are a lot less trendy (I personaly have not changed my user name in over 5 years), and people dont usally (but not allways) go around once a month parading around saying "look at my new user name, isnt it cool!"

Yeah, but Massassi has a different kind of class. Not the intellectual balanced debate, or the polite mediation, or politically correct messages of some other boards, but a simple put up or shut up/words and actions class. Or at least that’s what I see. If you want respect in the showroom, you make something artistic, if you want respect in the discussion forum, you say something. Just posting is not a guarantee of respect, but that’s how you go about earning it.

Brian's "avatar" is part of the "Administrator" group title. It's not a true avatar, any other Administator would have the same profile pic.

As for avatars, I wonder who removed support from the forums for it? Maybe Brian did and forgot or something. Anyways someone could certantly take a fresh copy of vBulletin and splice the code back in.
