I know a lot of people probably aren't going to like me for this, but I have to say - they had it coming. It was foolish to leave that sort of content in the game, surely knowing full well that someone would find out about it at some point. The lawsuit was brought upon themselves, and they shouldn't have risked it. It's really not worth it, I don't know why the game incorporated it.

I'm probably never going to play the game though, so I'm not really too fussed.

I think AO might turn out good for them. It makes the game even more desirable.

It's only a matter of time before someone gets the mod from the original game and compiles it for the new releases that have the sexual content taken out. It'll still be around no matter what they do.

On a side note, what's the difference between 'M' and 'AO' aside from some stores refusing to sell games with the 'AO' rating?

I agree with you on that. However, I don't agree with the people who sued. It's as if these people have nothing else to do but sit around, look for problems that are "corrupting our youth," and then sue someone over it. Then the big companies relent under the pressure rather than standing up to these stupid lawsuits, which therefore only encourages more lawsuits.

So it's got some hidden sex scenes. Big friggin deal. It's rated M, meaning anyone over 17 can play it, and if you're 17, I think you're old enough to see sex. Hell, probably half of the world's 17-year olds are actually having sex, which is a far bigger problem than them simply seeing it in some computer game.

The difference between M and AO - one year. M is 17 years or older. AO is 18 years and older. Essentially, you must be 18 to buy the AO version.
2005-07-20, 3:27 PM #7
M means you can buy the game if you're 17. AO means you should be 18 if the stores even enforce it.

I still haven't seen how explicit this stuff actually is. At least Rockstar is going to fix it so new versions of the game won;t have the controversial stuff in it.

Wow, a whole years difference... Now I know that a lot of maturing can be done in a years time, but I'm more mature than most 20 year olds I know right now.

Meh,I turn 18 in a month, so I guess this doesn't bother me at all.
2005-07-20, 3:29 PM #9
The real difference between AO and M is that major retailers won't stock AO games in their stores.

You never see AO games sitting on the shelves at Wal-Mart, Best Buy, EB, etc. You pretty much have to order them.

Maybe it's because I'm European, but I totally do not understand that kind of policy...

Sex is wrong, but violence is ok, apparently... absolutely crazy and hypocritical.

Why always the taboo on sex and not on violence? I think there shouldn't be a restriction on either... from say, age 12 and up.

Kids should know about sex at an early age. I know GTA does not file under 'sexual education', but sex is a natural part of life, even moreso than violence.

What's even crazier is that they decided you need to be 18 instead of 17 to buy it!

Friggin' seventeen!!!!!! What kind of world IS this?! What a nonsense!

It's great

Parents and activist groups complaining that the ESRB did something bad to their children when they are the ones who refused to actually take responsibility for in the first place by letting them get the game.

LET THE ESRB DO EVERYTHING! THEN WE CAN COMPLAIN WHEN THEY ARE WRONG!

That really gets me too. I'm a pretty big fan of this country, but when it comes to all the taboos about sex, that always really pisses me off. Sure, people complained about the violence in GTA, but not until sex showed up did anyone actually take action. So apparently slaughtering cops is bad, but not worth government intervention, but hidden sex scenes is.

I really have never understood the claims.

Sure the sex scenes are in the game. But they are inaccessable! You have to physically modify the files to be able to see the sex scenes. It's not like typing in a cheat code or something. I honestly cant see how anyone can blame rockstar.

I did try the mod and it's overrated. It's not very fun and there's better porn elsewhere. I don't see what all the fuss is about.

Well actually, you're wrong. It's likely they didn't realize it was there, and/or didn't think to remove it from the disk. I don't see how they got it coming to them at all.

Sex is wrong.

but murder, arson, rape, theft and GBH are perfectly fine as long as your 17.
2005-07-20, 4:07 PM #17
Well I'm certainly intrigued. So basically you're not allowed any offensive content... even if you have to tear about the disc to access it?

depends if its got those square pixely censor things or not.

The sex scenes are in the PS2 version too, you just need to use alot of codes with a game shark or something. Oh and the sex mini game involves pushing up and down. CJ has sex with his clothes on as well....

But rape is usually defined as violently forcing sex upon someone unwilling to have sex.

Suprisingly, rape is considered a violent crime in the US, not a sex crime. I guess they can't combime the two or the legal system would blow up.

That's cause rape isn't a sexual act, it's a violent act (at least in this context). When set out to rape someone, you don't do it because you want to have sex, you do it because you want to control that person through violence.
2005-07-20, 7:20 PM #31
.... So you know for a fact that every rapist doesn't rape to have sex? If its not for the sex, then why do they rape them?

i used to care about this stuff but i can go drink have sex and enjoy violence legally!

although the only way to unlock is for the user to go out of their way to alter the game. I don't parent will need to worry about their 10 year olds getting to this via PS2 and xbox....

Being a 12 going on 13 year old in today's society, I feel the need to insert my comment.

I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH YOU. I know 15 year old who I am more mature than. I really do. And although I've never played/seen any of the stuff in SA, I recognize it's wrong and I won't just do it because I can in the game. If the child understands it fully and knows it's wrong, I see no problem with letting them play the game. And although I don't completely understand every last thing about sex, just speaking about the general tween/early teen age group, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a REGULAR kid who didn't know alot about sex.
I had a blog. It sucked.

I can only assume you guys don't know what a gameshark is.

IT CHANGES MEMORY ADDRESSES MANUALLY!

So the content is not really available on the PS2 version either. The gameshark changes games in the same way that a mod does.

Per the question of "why no sex yet gratuitous violence is ok?":

The United States is still pretty Victorian when it comes to sex and the ilk. Seriously, if some members of Congress had their way, women would not be allowed to show anything below the calves.
