So.....the ESRB is starting to move against modding

Picked this up while I was checking out the latest news on the whole "Hot Coffee" mess.

http://www.esrb.org/about_updates.asp#7-20-05

Quote:
...Furthermore, the ESRB calls on the computer and video game industry to proactively protect their games from illegal modifications by third parties, particularly when they serve to undermine the accuracy of the rating....

I really don't like where this is going. I can see it now, some moron is going to make a big deal out of this, its going to hit Washington, and then there is going to be a witchhunt for modders. Next thing you know, modders are going to be plastered all over the media as corrupt individuals who are the obsessed of the obsessed with games and gore. Theres nothing good that can come out of this.

This is like what happened in Greece. The government was too retarded to tell the difference between games and gaming, so it banned all games. FPS's, RTS's ect. It's like banning the Internet because some of it's porn.

They'll never learn, if someone wants something enough, they'll get it.

If gamers want to mod a game enough, they'll find a way to do it.

A dark clad man steps into the ally in front of Aaron. The man reaches into his pocket and removes his left glove which he places on his hand. "I thought you wouldn't show up." Aaron backs against the wall.
Aaron felt squeamish. "Yeah, I was running a little la-" The man interrupted.
"Never mind. Have you got the mod?" He was walking closer to Aaron, further out of the street light.
"Yeah, I finished it up last night. It's just a general blood mod, but it'll make Lara Croft feel a little more kickass, and a lot less cartoony. I also threw in a nude model of Lara for you, just for kicks." Aaron unclasps his suitcase, taking out a flash drive. He holds it up. "You promised cash."
"And I've got cash." The man reached into his other pocket, removing a wad of 20s.
"You never saw me." Aaron hands him the flash drive in exchange for the wad of cash.
"Right." The man looks as if he's about to turn away from the Aaron and head down the street. Instead, he turns around and grabs Aaron's hand, bending it around behind his back. "You are under arrest. I have you on tape and camera confessing to modding the recently released Tomb Raider game. If the tapes aren't enough, this flash drive should have everything we need." A number of cars have pulled up and a team of special forces SWAT corps are surrounding the alley.

The ESRB blows. It's acting as if mods are already illegal, when they aren't in most cases.

GameSpot already asked the ESRB about this several days ago when the news first hit, and a representative stated that they were not going after mods in general. So please, read up on the issue and refrain from posting misinformation next time.

Besides, even if this did go through, there's nothing anyone can do about it. Just like warez.

I'm pretty sure they're talking about hot coffee specifically, which has been passed off as "illegal" because it apparently violates some section of the EULA. Basically just more bull****.
2005-07-27, 12:27 AM #21
The only bad thing that could happen and would have any effect on modders what so ever is that some game makers would make modding harder. However, the modding possibilities of individual games have been widely varied for a long time, and I don't really see that fact changing because of foolishness like this.

Assuming the proverbial cacky hit the rotary object on the ceiling, I can't see how game developers (well, some games developers) are going to rule out modding completely. It's pretty common knowledge that modding adds a whole slew of replayability in the form of new mods, new levels, gametypes... the list goes on. Admittedly, this is me in their less cynical moments and most probably games'd be released with expansions for the same price every three months.

Which is wierd, because hot coffee was built into the game. It's in the PS2 version as well.

Yeah that's why I don't believe this bull cause honestly they found it in the PS2 version it was built by Rockstar, not some moder.

Sorry, didn't know that. I read that on ESRB's website and after running some searches through Google and checking GameSpot for any recent news, I thought there was none. Could you link the article, I'd like to see what they said.

I personally still don't like it, I still think someone will take this, whether now or in the future, and try to blow it out of proportion.

But you still have to use a mod to unlock it.

Yes you have to use a gameshark to alter the ps2's ram while the game is running but that doesn't change the fact that the files for the mini game and the ai scripts were in the game when it was published.
2005-07-27, 8:07 AM #29
Why don't they just ban everything at once instead of doing it progressively? That way, we'll all be pissed once instead of multiple times.

Nah. Never happen. Some games actually WANT to be modded. Case in point: Neverwinter Nights. That game has been modded to death, had Resurrection cast on it, then modded again. Let me tell you, there are plenty of mods that would certainly change NWN's teen rating. This crusade against OMGBOOBIES in video games is ridiculous and a complete waste of time.

Sorry, didn't mean to come on so strong. It's just that usually people see something and then run to post it on the forum without really looking at the issue, which seems not to be the case here.

And I was actually mistaken, it was Gamecloud (not GameSpot): http://www.gamecloud.com/article.php?article_id=779

I agree somewhat with your slippery slope fears, although I don't think it will happen anytime soon unless an actual user created "sex" mod is released for a popular game that is widely accessible to "vulnerable innocent children". I mean, we have nude patches already, but those are few and far between - and far off the public radar.

Thanks, that article puts me a bit more at ease. Maybe the ESRB thankfully has some sense after all.

Speaking of "sex mods", whats the latest on the Sims 2 bit? Last I heard that Miami lawyer, John Thompson I think, was threating with lawsuits over how Sims was worse than Hot Coffee. Something vague about removing blur and pedifiles and something like that, but I don't know much about the Sims at.
