I'm lucky if I get 20k/sec. :(

Seems like they have doubled my connection, now I normally get something like 200 kb / s

According to some internet bandwidth tests it's hanging around 800-1000 kbps

One time i got 6.54 MB/s. But that was a fluke.

My whole town (23.000 inhabitants) received fiberglass network reaching to every household on government subsidiary. We all received 10mbit internet for 1 year for free, so yay! Phone now also works via the glassfiber which makes it free to call anyone in the town and very cheap to call anywhere else in comparison to any other Dutch phone company's rates. Next year we'll be getting TV too via this jig.

But to return to the main subject. My line supports upto 3mb/s download (it's capped fiberglass easily allows up to 20mb/s :\ ) and 1mb/s upload.

But there aren't much places where you can download that fast most FTPs limit their speeds to a couple hundred. Though on the Dutch university hub on DC++ (file sharing hub for 10mbit users only) everything goes überfast.

Here at home, I'm lucky if it levels out around 4 kb/s (start off around 20), but I've seen up to 6 MB/s at school.

Same. However, on certain FTPs, I've had a sustained 800-900Kb/s download speed. Thank you RoadRunner for bursting packets!

Right, whatever it's called in wacky English :) I was just translating it literally from Dutch, guessing that should be about right.

That's advertising problem. Your connection speed is actually 512 kiloBITS. But you divide that by 8 or so, and you geta rough estimate of your average downstream speed. In your case, you get 108kiloBYTES, which is above the average.

It's used to make their lines look oh so fast

Fiberglass is something entirely different, it's seethrough, durable, shatterproof plastic used in place of glass windows.

No, not really. Every ISP does it, you just picked a slow one regardless.

On my home 56k I usually get 5-7 KB/sec, I've gotten up to 70 before, which is the REAL data rate, it DOES download that fast, but steadily declines down to 5-6 over the course of a minute or two. All data downloaded during that time is intact and not corrupt, and no my browser or download manager isn't reporting speeds incorrectly.

At school I get an excees of 12 MB/sec. You all lose.

Uhh, emon, the reason it "shows" that fast is because when you are picking where to save the file and naming it and such, it is already downloading the file. But the counter for the speed hasn't started yet. So when you finally click the save button, it looks and sees that 75kb has already been downloaded, and thinks that you somehow downloaded that in one second (since the counter starts after you click save, not when it actually starts downloading). As the download continues at 5-7 kb/s, it averages out.

You aren't REALLY getting 70kb/s at all, it's physically impossible. (Your modem isn't even built to handle speeds like that, and the phone lines are completely incapable of such speed)
2005-08-08, 7:16 AM #36
Phone lines aren't incapable of that speed. DSL KTHX.

It could happen, but I've never seen it happen.

I download at about 120 kBps. My connection at the mo is 1Mbps Blueyonder Broadband. They randomly upgrade you connection for no cost. Ergo, they rock.
