Am I going to get an accurate picture of America by asking the drunken crazy guy on a train, simply because he'll have an 'American perspective'?

I already listed a few of the reasons Hugo Chavez is bad. Links with regional terror, support of western enemies, and communist inclinations. If someone fundamentally disagrees that those things are bad, there is no reason to discuss the issue.

If you're going to stick blindly by your 1950's McCarthy-style "COMMUNISM IS EVIL!" mentality, then I don't particularly want to discuss that with you either, because you're instantly going to ignore all of the benefits that socialism has brought under Chavez' government.

Support of 'western enemies' really brings into question why they're enemies in the first place (see above), and whether the whole "the friend of my enemy is my enemy!" mentality is really sensible.

The only one of those three you listed that's actually worth taking seriously is "links with regional terror". I'd like you to elaborate on this.

Only if that's the case. You're just making an assumption here

That's picking a biased example to try to prove a weak point.

Not worth taking seriously because mort-hog says so, huh? Be reasonable.

Actually, he asked him if his wife had any education in the region's politics...so yeah...
That's picking a biased example to try to prove a weak point.
Nah, it's proving a point sure, but think about it, a lot of people in this country are ignorant. I'd say everyday I meet people who just have no idea what's going on around the country and blame the gas prices on 'the government' when only like 70 cents (granted, a lot of it) is taxes.
Not worth taking seriously because mort-hog says so, huh? Be reasonable.
Not worth taking seriously because the rest of it was all biased, stupid crap, more like. I'd like to see Wookie actually make an argument in his favor instead of ignoring Mort.

Actually, he went over each of the points and explained WHY it wasn't worth taking seriously. Pay attention or I'll send you to the principal's office. :p

This thread provides a good example of why I don't even finish my debates around here anymore. Except now, I'm not even getting involved in one.

Well, maybe in the thread, but not in the debate. Especially since I haven't read most of the posts in this thread. But what I did read consists of the usual strawman BS, as well as the bickering over semantics.

Where is your wife from, Wookie06? Just curious. Because that, in my opinion, does make a difference. I agree that living in a region is not the same as being an expert on it, but it's better than me picking up the newspaper and skimming the headlines to make opinions on things.

And by the way, I am taking a course on Latin American politics this semester, so in 3 months I'll destroy all of you with my superior knowledge.

Sorry, meant to respond to this a long time ago. She's from Panama. That's where most of here family still is.
Actually, he asked him if his wife had any education in the region's politics...so yeah...
No he didn't. He simply stated matter of factly that no opinion they (including my in-laws) hold mattered unless they had college degrees on sociology and some Latin-American subject.

That's awesome. Have you been there? I heard seeing the canal for the first time is one of the coolest things ever.

I was stationed there from 90-91, went back for training and had the opportunity to visit family in 93. Last time we all visited as a family was 98. It was great fun back then. Much better when there was an American presence there. It really helped drive the economy down there. I can say that's one of the reasons I dislike Carter's presidency, negotiating the treaty for us to turn everything over down there.

Well, I agree that the US should have retained more control over the Canal seeing as we did build it and it is probably THE most important aspect of national security/commerce. However, it is unfortunately in Panama... so I can also agree with Carter handing it back over to them. Although, I also believe Carter to be one of those people who should never have been president, but rather just a philanthropist. Like maybe he could bump off Jesse Jackson, who does no one any good except aging Civil Rights wannabes and do something worthwhile.
