So I bought a katana today.....
2005-08-26, 3:55 PM #1
...no, not a real authentic one. I couldn't begin to afford that at this point, so buying a fake was fine by me. Plus, I've always wanted a katana since I've been a kid. Perhaps one day I'll get a real one, but this is a good start as far as I'm concerned.

Its a replica, and it only cost me $35. The blade is high-carbon stainless steel (440 grade) and that's a good grade of steel, especially for a replica.

The blade isn't sharp by any means, but the tip is sharpened to a point and could probably do a lot of damage if I jabbed someone with it.

Anyways.... post your katana (or other type of sword) if you have one!

Now Pagewizard won't bother cheating on the women. He'll just cut their head off when he's done with them.

Or better yet, he won't have to have a valid argument for stealing all of the software/music/movies he owns, and instead will just cut the head off of anyone who questions his warezing.

I own a Bo staff my uncle made [He's a shaolin monk up in the boundry waters] and a bo sword [I'm pretty sure that's the name of it, the wooden swords] from Japan for 90 dollars. It's perfect wood for a training sword, and was even used [not the sword itself, but the type] in the army for the emperor before they banned swords all together.

Ninjas don't need huge flaunty swords because they don't have to cut through 3 inches of steel to meet flesh. Ninjas aren't wimps. :D

Here's a couple pics of my Shinken Katana I had purchased and made specially for me. Cost quite a bit but it's worth it. It's beautiful.

Katanas could much more easily cut through 3 inches of steel than your average longsword. Swords were meant for bashing, not really hacking or slashing so much, in the medieval era.

I think both are cool, and both have their place.

Is that one of the fold out plastic ones or the professional quality glass ones?
I have a plastic one. Obi Wan's from TPM. I was Obi for halloween.
I also have a small glass keychain one with stainless steel handle. Unfortunately, the handle has a dent in it ad the batteries are dead, but the dent has them stuck in there.
I am so ghetto.
Aside from that, I really don't have that much weaponry... I have a tomahawk.

440? Good for wall-hanging and choping trees, but otherwise not the best steel around. Pretty useless for sword-fighting. =P

I'm bored so I'll post all my weapons. (Most of them aren't technically mine till I turn 18 or 21)

This is my samurai sword. Apparently the blade is from the 15th century, but I was too lazy to follow up on it though it's on my to do list. It's still real shiny. I don't have the little plug that goes in the handle to keep the handle cover on. There's a pic of it off. It has writing on the tang, but it's Japanese.

This is a tanto; this, however, isn't it.

It's quite a bit longer, has no guard, and the sheath looks exactly the same as the hilt, so that it looks like one solid thing until you unsheath it

And it's curved

My great great uncle who passed away a few years ago had his fathers Civil War uniform and equipment (guns, photos etc.) Crazy. 1860 was only 145 years ago! He also has this big Buddah statue and a bunch of Samurai things. He used to collect a crap load. I have a HUGE amethyst rock of his in my basement. Hold on I'll try and get pictures. (Edit: Later today. It's 2:30am and I can't find my camera) He was a great guy. He'd collect the coolest things when he was younger and he always went on trips to look for more cool things :p

The katana I've bought today is kind of cheesy, in retrospect (yes, the handle is plastic) so Ive decided to return it tommorrow.

I've already ordered this:

http://www.kingofswords.com/product_info.php/products_id/8588

It's actually sharp, has a nice design which I like after reviewing the others (obviously, there are others that are better, but I'm not willing to spend that much), is within my price range, and is $10 less than the one I bought first. (shipping included.)

I'm thinking of starting a collection with more expensive swords later.

They sell the same 'authentic' katanas that japan sells for about 10 dollars USD. You just gotta know where to look.

I'm also thinking of getting a pair of sai daggers, does anyone know if they are legal to possess in the US, or even california?

(I know that throwing stars are illegal to possess)

Pommy: I'm not going to save money by going to china, as the travel costs would not justify the best sword bargain that I could possibly make. I know that I'm getting a modern mass-produced katana here, and I'm cool with that. Plus, if I'm out to buy an "authentic" katana, I sure as hell wouldn't take some vendor's word for it, I would take an expert along with me to inspect the piece before I buy to confirm or refute its authenticity.

Edit: Damn future posting

You're not the only one. I'm weaponless, bar anything I could acquire from the garage and use as some form of cudgel or otherwise large unwieldy blunt instrument.

I do want a buster sword, though.

Katanas were actually more effective then the middle-ages european broad/great swords. When slashing or doing anything effective with them, they usually tend to "stick" to the opponet, especially if they wear armor. And that is an open oppurtunity to get killed by someone else. Katanas are curved just enough so they won't stick to them, they'll just cut right through them.

This is also found when the early Turks used Scimatars while mounted on horses.

In addition, I strongy suggest you don't waste your money on Katanas, especially if they are fake, unless they are specially made for you. If you carry a katana, you should know how to use it. Carrying it alone is an open challange...in regaurds to Samurai. It is great disrespect to what they believe in if you open it without intention to defend or kill, none-the-less carry it. At least train in one Kendo class. Anyways, I suggest you spend $1000 like I did and get one that's specially made for you (in regaurds to height and other factors).

Many are currect in which people say Boken in terms of the "wooden katana", because as you all know...they hurt...but without death. It is the ideal weapon to practice with, and are twice (to greater) the weight of a normal katana (which custom made is like a feather), so you can learn fast reflexes with a heavy weapon.

On a completely random note, I've got a whole bunch of African weapons: Zulu knobkerries and assegai, there's a hand axe and a bushman's bow and arrows.

And yeah, wooden swords are called bokken, we had one on the shrine at my judo club and it gets used from time to time at ju jitsu classes as a practice weapon to defend yourself from (either treated like a bat or quite literally like a sword).

I have a bunch because 1) cuz my friends and I mess around and make short martial arts movies, and I saw several on sale in china for 10 dollars and bought accordingly
2) I actually do use this stuff in sport wushu, and being that I was in china I was able to buy said weapons for 10 dollars as opposed to the ridiculously overpriced 40 that they charge for the same thing here
