This has never worked in the past, but let's try again.

You will always get people disagreeing with each other in threads, you'll also get people being a bit too hot-headed when it comes to putting forward their argument and dismissing those of other people. These are generally the people who seem to somehow escape any long-term bans.

Some of you go on a thread simply to provoke an argument or to gain pleasure from proving someone else wrong, you have no place here. To be honest the admins don't mind too much if arguments in threads just get a little aggressive, it's when the arguments stop being about the topic and become about scoring points against each other that we have to step in.

Admins are perfectly free to ban people who don't strictly break any of the rules, we might just start banning people for being useless. We might also be a bit less generous when it comes to unbanning people.

Good call, how many people have been banned here for this and that, and once unbanned just continue on doing what they did prior to the ban? Too many.

So is this just for the people who start arguments because they can, goad other people into violent rages because the person mentioned earlier thinks it's hilarous, and goes around flaming everyone's project in the showcase even though they've never done any editing and don't know what they're talking about? Because if so, I don't know why their accounts were unbanned in the first place.
2005-09-03, 10:11 AM #7
I like the idea. In all honesty, I really enjoy a good argument, but not flaming, like:

[CONVO]

Max1836: dammm man my Civic is da BAWBM yo

Fred1743: haha u pansy, Civics bite. Honda makin' sum damm bad shizz, man

Max1836: WUT U SAYIN BOUT MA CIVIC B*TCH

Fred1743: roflroflrofl Civic < playskool < Mazda 6

Max1836: u mutha****er! whats the gas mileage on that piece of sh*t tin can u drivin?

Fred1743: uhh.... that aint what YO MAMMA SAID LAS NITE

Max1836

[/CONVO]

Okay, yes, that's not exactly flaming, but meh. We more sophisticated folks, like myself, enjoy a good, even-sided argument, with proper evidence and such.

You're sort of putting words into his mouth and extrapolating it. I think Detty's just sick of people attacking eachother and making threads end out.... badly. People bait eachother a LOT now, and it's very specific for a few people [I and detty talked about this a little this morning.]

Now, for example, the kind of arguments I enjoy are those like the one I caused, in the "Speed of light sped up!" thread. Basically, people keep throwing one point at eachother after another, until someone just runs out of knowledge. That turned out to be me, but I had a lot of fun doing it. Kind of like turning a "death spiral" into "extreme skydiving"!

ha ha ha...

I agree with this (and I know it doesn't matter either way) just as long as we suddenly don't have strict 'rules' for arguing. Any discussion will have to have various pieces of evidence that must be meticulously gathered otherwise they'll be shot down (very politely, mind you) by scores of well-documented counter-evidence. This might work well in a scientific thread, but just wait until people expect it to happen in more abstract threads, like human rights, religion, the arts, and post your desktop.

You're sort of making more out of it than Detty intended. It's just annoying to have the 3rd page of the argument to have posts in it which could apply to ANY topic at ALL. No editing of key words is needed. Not to mention, SOME of our forum regulars like to bait people into attacking them, which ends up in blunt flamewars.

I don't think that "useless" is the right word. Most of us don't actually contribute to the website (helping to build on the html, designing stuff [Brain's jobs, etc]). There are lot's of folks who come in and say "useless" stuff, (no offense to the following threads) such as a pet dying, or wondering how the weekend was. Not that I don't enjoy reading those threads, of course. The point is that it's mostly useless stuff that make this place very interesting.

I think you guys are misinterpreting "useless" A useless post would be "OMG COOL!!!" on a thread about a dying dog, something that just doesn't fit with the topic at all or is being used as flamebait.
Sam: "Sir we can't call it 'The Enterprise'"
Jack: "Why not!"
2005-09-04, 10:04 AM #33
Yeah, same with de-railing a thread or just plain spamming.

But then again, it depends on personal opinion. Perhaps the poster in question simply admires death and can't wait until it's his turn.

It's left vague because as soon as things are clearly defined, people will find ways to exploit them.

See, I would consider /\ above a useless post and thus he should be banned for saying something stupid like that
2005-09-05, 11:46 AM #40
Than you're really not seeing the point. Just because you don't find it useful doesn't mean it doesn't help the situation. It's not a negative post, nor is it a post to flame bait anyone else. In fact, your post is more similar to the sort of useless thing I see at massassi daily. "someone elses post is dumb and stupid and wrong hahaha"
