Do me a favor (stuff regarding jk editing)
2005-09-18, 12:53 PM #1
....pleaaase

I decided that I'd do a 15-20 minute presentation (for a class) on the history of JK, its editing aspect, impacts / sequels etc because it just happened to be its around 8th birthday at the time of my decision.

There's one aspect I have a slight bit of trouble is, and that's remembering/knowing the major developments of editing since '97 or so .. major landmarks, etc that opened the door for more stuff .. this is because I never really got into JK editing and in fact know very little about it

that would be stuff like AotS and glowsaber, up to things now like sith 2 and jkr
as well as things in level design, cog, TCs (tdir hah)
*anything* significant

Anybody want to make a list or plug their own (significant) achievements ? ;)
(btw, please note WHY listed things are significant)

1. 16 Bit MATS
2. Thing limit remover
3. (If it counts) the viewsave cog in Drazen Isle
4. JED :p
5. Lighter plugin
6. DBZ:Tdir got around the translucent bug, don't remember how
7. Custom HUD
8. Patch Commander
2005-09-18, 1:07 PM #4
Well, I wasn't around for many of the major things, but you could include Datamaster, the adjoin/thing limit remover, and the presentation of my 360 degree range of flight...

Ok umm I feel like an idiot haha

1. 16 Bit MATS - I'm guessing, as opposed to 8 bit mats? which meant higher res textures right
2. Thing limit remover - which allowed you to put more things in .. a level?
3. (If it counts) the viewsave cog in Drazen Isle - huh?
4. JED :p - yea ok
5. Lighter plugin - what?
6. DBZ:Tdir got around the translucent bug, don't remember how - I'll just say they got around the transluscent bug. What's the transluscent bug?
7. Custom HUD -ok
8. Patch Commander - yeah

And I didn't get any of what SG-fan said

1. Yeah, they only had 8bit mats, which means only 256 colors on a texture instead of 16,000.
2. It allows you to have unlimited numbers of 3dos (models) in a level, instead of ~640.
3. An old cog that allowed drazen isle to be much more complex then the engine would normally allow. Basically turned off adjoins when far away and such so the engine didn't crash.
5. New plugin for JED that gives awesome lighting without hardly any work
6. Basically, if you had 2 translucent surfaces, one behind other, it wouldn't work. They'd just go transparent.

Thanks a lot :)

Keep them coming .. I entreat you
(Also, if there are specific people that I can kinda talk to/interview about this ..)

In my opinion, wouldn't a presentation on Doom/Quake1 edititing be more interesting?

Doom mods -> Quake1 openess -> Half-Life -> CS -> CS clones...etc.

As great as JK was, it doesn't seem to have as a large impact to the modding community as the the children of Doom.

The translucent bug was that a translucent surface wouldn't display certain templates through it, like other players, actors. We fixed it by flagging the translucent object as archi.

I think the biggest thing I came up with for tdir was that JK can only load so much data from the resources. Thats what led to the resource switching in tdir. Trying to load it on top of the JK resources leads to random bugs, models not loading, etc. Thats why people always had problems with making total conversions.

I also thought my animations that supported multiple hierchys (different player sizes) was pretty darn cool :)

JK Arena:

Some cool cogs were put together that allowed one on one matches while other players could watch from spectator rooms. Level creators have to implement the cogs into the level.

External Bin Saving:

If I remember correctly it is a system where an external program ( I think) could save information of a JK multi player game. For example: if someone converted JK single player levels to MP levels, you could play through it coop (not as simple as that) and be able to save your game.

GBK's TVCS - Ask him. Basically, it's a system to avoid crashing with too many things in a level.

External Bin Saving - Sige developed a way to save data to bin files so JK could speak to external places, thus perform math functions that JK wasn't capable of.
Weapon Changing via Mouse Scroll plugin - Hellraiser made a plugin to change weapons via scroll wheel.

Projects:

JKTB - JK Team Battle.... segway to:
ArmyTC - Hellcat and friend's very complex mod that saw progress and gameplay like you do in HL mods.
JKArena - Brad's [osiris] gameplay modification that allowed 2 people to go head to head with host choice weapons.

FRMod - The very popular mod, and probably one of the coolest JK mods, SavageX pulled out all the stops and gave us some pretty fun gameplay mechanics with this one.

Fatal Resistance of course! I hope you didn't disappoint the almighty SavageX.

Also you should show Haven, Drazen Isle, Dark Tempests, Massassi Level packs (and so on)

Don't forget the ill-fallen SWTTC and the partially released TPMTC. We kept MotS editing alive for quite some time. Then we lost our fan base, and gave up.

(and I personally liked BFP[big fluffy skin pack] but it wasnt much of a breakthrough, just cool)

then of course all the great lvls, like drazen as said before and barrons head which completly changed the game
