She got arrested in front of the White House. Personally I think Bush should have walked out and laughed, then went back inside.
I can't think of anything to put here right now.

Yes, that would have been an excellent idea. I wish he had.

I still don't understand protesting. You stand around with signs, screaming and shoving your opinion down other people's throats. What the **** is that supposed to do? Several hundred well written persuasive essays to a state senator will do *a lot* more than standing around like an idiot. Unfortunately people don't have that kind of mental capacity.

OH MY GOD MR. EMON. THANK YOU.

Holy ****, if I could make what you just said into a stamp, or a sticker, I'd slap it on every little brat at my school, in my city, and everywhere in the US that think they don't have a say in what happens. Seriously: It's why the democratic system works. not because you can protest, but because a letter to your senator with well documented reasoning WILL do something, that is, if enough people send those letters. Your senator wants to get reelected, and hopefuly, cares about their people's well being. If a majority of a state agrees on a topic and supports that topic, the senator will vote differently in congress. Trust me.

Well-written letters to Congressmen only work if you're a large corporation, "public interest" group, or independently-wealthy campaign financier.

No. If you get a large group of people to write similar letters on the same subject, the elected official will take note because for every person who actually takes the time to write the letter, there are going to be far more who feel the same way. Yes, they are going to listen to groups that give them money, but it's the people who lect them back into their office.

the thing that bugs me is the fact that the woman protests the war because her son was a soldier who died. What the hell do you think will happen if you join the military? She needs to recognize the fact that her son knew the risks and made a decision. It's tragic,yes... But she can't blame the government. It's not like they sent him over there telling him it was a photo shoot.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

I used to have this optimisim of Congress. Now I have none whatsoever. It is filled with 535 politicians who use that place as careers rather than being public servants. And writing/protesting doesn't always work. Big case in point, the illegal immigration issue. But I won't delve deeper into that issue. Not the thread.

Cindy Sheehan has probably lost all of her credibility. I think the war/anti-war thing has been dying down. She's dragging an issue out longer than it needs be. Hey lady, give it a rest will ya.

For writing to your representatives to be truely effect, you also have to know how to write a good persuasive essay. Unfortunately, most people don't. Most people would end up just attacking the representatives.

You can't even vote yet, and I'd love for you to name off your representatives, their political affiliation, and their viewpoints and how much revenue they've taken in from interest groups for their campaign. Seriously, you act so politically enlightened, when all you're doing is taking your dad and other Christians' viewpoints, instead of thinking rationally and taking your own. That's all I ever see you do. If someone's right, 99% of the time you're right there with them. It just irks me that you know next to nothing about local politics, yet you act like you know a helluva lot more than you do.

Of course, I'm just as guilty as far as not knowing local politics. Then again, I've only lived here six months.

While I agree that Sheehan and all the other retarded housewives need to be put down, if people disagree with something they should do something about it. Both sides of this debate have their retards, case in point, the people saying that the soldiers are over in Iraq fighting for our freedom. Ha whatever. Cause before the Iraqi Invasion I was scared to walk down the street cause Muqtada Al-Sadr's army was hanging out in my neighborhood. And spreading democracy by force is just as laughable.

Yeah, protesting has never been an effective tool for change:

(It annoys me when people totally dismiss the act of protest. That said, I don't necessarily agree with the way some people like Sheehan carry out their anti-war protests. On the other hand, I don't believe that "protesting hurts the soldiers" and "it gives the enemy hope" BS. Give me a break.)

Duh, that's real protesting, not a few dozen people screaming "YOU KILLED ME SON" or something stupid in front of the Whitehouse. Sorry if I sounded like I was dismissing protesting completely, there are historical cases where it worked very well, but the times have changed.

There is a major change between Sheehan and Martin Luther King Jr. Starters, her son, who was in his MID TWENTIES willingly joined the army. He was not drafted, he was not forced to join and forced to go to Iraq and forced to die. He joined knowing full well what could happen, and it did. Had they of grabbed her son from her home and say if he doesn't join the military he is going to jail, then yeah maybe she has an effective ground for it. I mean look at the picture in the article, she even looks like a ****, all smug thinking she is the greatest thing. King did something for the greater good, this woman is doing it for personal gain.
I can't think of anything to put here right now.
