The Senate insisted Thursday on opening up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for drilling after being blocked by environmentalists for decades, then voted overwhelmingly to prohibit exporting any of the oil pumped from the region.

Interesting news, to be sure.

Put "Alaska" and "Oil" in the same thread title, and rabid debating is sure to ensue. lets watch!

Debating about it is fine, I don't care. 75% of the purpose of this thread is to just let people know who otherwise wouldn't find out by other sources.

I can't stand you liberals. Don't you know oil drilling is GOOD for the environment?

Yeesh.
2005-11-04, 12:03 AM #5
Can't stand them over dramatizing how bad it is too..

The funny thing is that people will ***** about this then complain that nothing is being done about gas prices.

I can't stand you ultra-right wing conservative wackos who want to permanently scar our beautiful country to fuel your war-mongering!!!

...you know, if you ignore the ridiculous exaggerations, Thrawn, we're more likely to be on the other side, no?

I realize that made no sense, it's 2am, forgive me. I'm tired.

I'm sorry, I don't know what you just said. :)

You're guilty of what Thrawn was joking about.

i won't believe the two have anything to do with each other until someone can prove to me GW isn't becoming richer and richer by the second because of the high price of gas (oil).
GW can do something about the price of gas but it would slow down his portfolio and we wouldn't want that. our fearfull leader said he wouldn't do something about the price of gas because he shouldn't interfere with the free market. the only free market is his gas because we the tax payers pay for it. that **** hasn't paid for gas since he started in politics.
with a trillion barrels of oil in alberta they can leave alaska alone and bring the price of gas down to a reasonable level. trouble is they can do whatever they want because they make all these claims as to why the price of gas is so high and we just have to either believe them or not.

it's ****ing bull**** but that's life in the fast lane.

Gas prices do not concern me.

I dont give a flying f*** if you car drivers loose money, learn to get off your arse and cycle or use public transport.

The type who get a hard on for more oil, and would destroy nature to get to it, are the people I will make it my buisness to kill horribly when I become an EcoTerrorist .[/COLOR]

You have no idea what you're talking about.

The trillion+ barrels of oil in Alberta is tied up in tarsands. The only company with the technology to extract it is Syncrude, but it's a painfully slow and inefficient process. It's not worth doing if there are liquid crude deposits somewhere, just like how underwater shale deposits are off-limits until we have no other choice.

Yeah, such nature wildlife on these...cold, frost-covered rather barren Alaskan tundras.

Their drilling site is a NATURE PRESERVATION. The EXACT SPOT THEY PLAN TO DRILL is a caribou spawning ground. This drilling operation will render the entire herd extinct and kill off the natives who are still surviving on them.

ACTUAL research indicates that if you extracted ALL of the oil it would only last the United States a year.

And we have the uninformed knee-jerk reaction.

You folks made the same beef about the oil line. After they put that in, the caribou population trippled. You do realize that animals can co-exist with people. They're not going to turn the entire are into an industrial city you know.
2005-11-04, 7:30 PM #30
You act as if they are going to burn down all the trees and kill all the animals before they go in and start drilling. That's hardly the case because drilling technology has improved a whole lot. The oil compaines are aware that they have to be more envorinmanetally friendly these days, so they are.

Don't get me wrong. I think we're going to be running short of oil within the next 100 years at most. We should be working on alternative fuels, but the fact is we still need oil these days

That shows that the caribou go there. It doesn't show that an oil rig will disrupt their breeding.

2005-11-04, 7:46 PM #31
Because, you know, I'm sure the caribou will get there and say "Oh man. Can't do any breeding with this here." I'm sure they'll just halt everything because an oil well is taking up a few acres of land.
Life is beautiful.
2005-11-04, 7:48 PM #32
why don't we just hire the caribou as oil rig workers

i bet they work cheap
