Things only get better after the first book / movie, Matt, it is IMO by far the worst.

I still dislike the LotR books, but the movies are masterpieces, as are the Harry Potter books AND movies. Lurve em.

I also listened to the Harry Potter 5th book on my MP3 player during school because I didn't want to be seen with the book. Sue me, but at the time it wasn't exactly a maneuver into the realm of cooldom.

I've read the first four books and seen the first film.

The film was alright, but I didn't think the first two books were very strong (the second one wasn't an enjoyable read IMHO) but the third book was definately my favourite, and the film should be a good watch. Hogwarts outdoor scenes get filmed at Durham Cathedral, just up the road, i've walked around many of the sets that they used in the first film... definately made it feel less like harry potter to me when I saw the places i'd visited a hundred times as a kid.

Harry Potter is great, and just because some may think it is a 8 year old fantasy book, it actually has quite a nice storyline. There is much suspense and action, death, and other things. Harry Potter is not a little kiddy's story.

Well, lets wait for movie. He's supposed to look haggered and tired and generally beaten, but he acts different, at least, hat's the impression i got from the books.

I never managed to get into them, and fantasy in that sort of style doesn't interest me. I'd post what I DO like reading, but then that'd just get me yelled at.

I seen part of the Sorcerer Stone on ABC one night. It looks pretty interesting, I like the music too (then again it is John Williams). I probably should rent the 1st two because I have to admit that the trailer for this third movie looks pretty interesting.

This movie is going to throw off my impression of Dumbledore, since I read the 5 books with Richard Harriss' voice in my head whenever it was Dumbledore dialogue. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

As for Lupin, I imagined him with longer hair than seen in the trailer. (He was also illustrated with longer hair in the 5th book). But that wont bother me too much so long as he acts like Lupin.

The kids acting didn't bother me at all. But then I guess I never really notice a "bad" acting job because I'm never looking for one. However, I will notice an actor doing an abysmal job, like Hayden Christiansen... he just didnt have the Darth Vader confidence in his voice... but theres been many threads about that before.

One scene I hope they dont mess with, or mess up, is Trelawney's prediction. I imagined her making that predicion with a voice that would shock the hell out of anyone... and I hope they use a voice that makes people jump out of their seats in the theare... like a low, dark, but loud satanic sort of voice. A voice that would convince people that this is not for 8 year olds.

I think Micheal Gambon is doing his best impression of the late Richard Harris for that very reason...

While I dont particurally like the harry potter series myself, I absolutely love what the series has done for the reading habits for millions of 8-12 year olds. These kids arent usually reading, but these books have almost "popularized" reading within the ages, which could have a profound effect in the future (Of course, drugs and alchohol will probally offset this effect, but what're ya gonna do?)

I think we're already doing that. And I totally agree with Jin - watch the films, and/or read the books before making any opinion. It's not hard. At the Christian school I go to, I get so tired of people saying how Harry Potter is evil and yet Lord of the Rings is a Christian masterpiece, that you'd have to be an idiot not to go see and love to death.

That amuses me, considering that Tolkien mythology essentially promotes polytheism.

I didn't read them until I saw the first two films and I really liked them, the film looks a bit better than the first two so I'm looking forward to that, although I thought Sirius Black could've looked a bit more worn... He looks far too much like Sean Bean in LotR [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

I've heard of Christians condemming the Harry Potter books, but never of them praising The Rings books. Funny that.

I can't get Gangsta No 1 out of my head, but provided he does a good voice it should be ok.

10 points for me, then [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]. Ah, the good ol' days.

I've read the first four books. They're entertaining, if nothing else. There are just other books I'd rather spend my time reading. Seen the first movie but wasn't impressed all that much.

Yeah, I think it's odd too, but lots of people sy so all the time. When I lived in Texas, people were like that. Now I'm living in North Carolina, and people are still like it. Maybe it's an American thing, which would account for why you hadn't heard so much of it, Martyn.
