Wait, that's an infinate loop.

Microsoft has insane amounts of cash to throw at the console. And with the massive hype around this console, they are sure to do much better than they did last time. (That and the NR is a pretty much "non-contender" in the console gaming area now)

And I don't believe that they've still got massive losses on the xbox.

Oh, and finally, the only reason Dreamcast failed was lack of press.

The system itself rocked hardcore (looks better than PS2 I think), and had an awesome game selection. (OMFG Sonic, OMFG Soul Calibur, OMFG Crazy Taxi, OMFG NFL2K, E.T.C.)

Awesome, SiliconC! Instead of debating engaging in the console vs. PC or XBox profitability debate, I will celebrate with ya.

Cheers! That stuff rarely ever happens. You are lucky this time. Be happy.

BTW can anyone show me some proof about MS's losses in making the XBox?

The Dreamcast failed because of lack of games. As soon as all of the games were finished, the system had already been canned. Sure, MS is boasting a huge lineup. But I bet those same games will be out for the PS2 and PC a month after (or before >_> )they're out for the XB360. That leaves only the "OMFG LAUNCH CAMP OUT AT BESTBUY" people to buy their launch games exclusively. Also, there's always the fact that Nintendo is going after the 75% of people that aren't hardcore gamers while Sony and MS spew technojargon at people and contend for the remaining 25% of people who never see the sun (figuratively). No matter what happens, Nintendo is still going to get more worldwide sales.
My prediction still rests at the fact that the 360 is nothing more than a PC and that it's quite frankly a waste of money, especially considering MS's integration with Windows Vista. They claim to want to "turn every gaming PC into a souped-up 360". Well, there goes your $400 gaming console. Looks like I'll be dual-booting Linux and XBox.

The Dreamcast failed because of ****ty advertising. The PS2 won because of awesome advertising. This is a widely accepted fact among the industry. One 14 year old's opinion on the matter means bupkis, especially since he wasn't yet 10 when it came out.

The people who go after the PS3 and the 360 are your everyday gamers, I guarantee. Mainly because the 360 has been overhyped beyond comprehension, and the PS3 will be by the time Sony Marketing (who should be commended on making the PS2, the least powerful and least capable of the consoles last generation THE best selling) get done with it. Also, nintendo's still 3rd I believe in GC vs PS2 vs Xbox sales.

The revolution has no hype, no news, no nothing except for what people who read gaming magazines get from said magazines. And that's not the majority of people--I'll guarantee you the 360 has the best chance to succeed, mainly because of its hype. It has no great games at launch, but it's been hyped, it's been seen, and it's buying a computer that's equivalent to ~2000 dollars for about 400 bucks (well...for the most part). It's something the gaming community has been BEGGING for forever.

Also: No good games at launch? Sonic Adventure, Soul Calibur, Shenmue, PLEASE for ****'s sakes, tell me those aren't good games, so I can laugh my *** off and realize that your opinion has no merit whatsoever. Oh...wait.

Shenmue was not popular among the common people. Hardcore gamers are an entirely different market. Sure, SC was good. But if you remember, Sonic Adventure was BUGGY AS HELL when it was released. I looked up DC info on various sites. Most of them state that poor-quality games, in addition to the PS2's announcement (Sony's GOOD advertisement, not Sega's BAD advertisement), drove the Dreamcast down the tubes. Also, I'm not 14.

You sure as hell act 14.

Sega had bad advertisement...it didn't help that Sony had AMAZING advertisement. Emotion engine my ***, the Dreamcast and PS2 are comparable on every level--except the DC can hold more texture information AND has anti-aliasing capabilities far exceeding the PS2's.

Sonic Adventure was a little buggy--doesn't change the fact that it was an amazing game. Shenmue is extremely popular to anyone who wasn't in diapers during the DC age. Ask anyone and they'll know it--it's like asking someone who played FPS' vigorously during 2000 what Deus Ex is.

They "state" that poor-quality games ruined the DC launch...the DC had Code Veronica ages before the PS2, had Unreal, Quake 3, Quake 2 as well I think, Sonic Adventures 1 and 2, Shenmues 1 and 2, Soul Calibur (amazing game, unbeatable EXCEPT PERHAPS by its successor), and also it had online play, peripherals out the wazoo, and it did things that no one had ever heard of.

Honestly, you don't know what you're talking about. Stop trying to act intelligent, because we all know you're not by now. Walk away.

I'm not going to abandon my point of view to your mindless flaming. I stand by my point that the DC's launch lineup was to blame. Sure, there were some awesome games. But pick a random 25-year-old off the street today and ask him if he's played Shenmue. There's a pretty slim chance of that, because the DC was a system that didn't have many games that appealed to "normal" people.

1) I only flamed you at the beginning, and the end. The rest of the post was debunking your ignorance.

2) The launch lineup was amazing--it's marketing that did it. You're wrong period. End. of. story. Hell, I wish this was an opinion so I could show the picture.

3) Your average 25 year old may or may not have even HEARD of the dreamcast. It depends on how big of a gamer they are/were.

Second problem: Easy piracy. Goes hand in hand with "no launch games", the sales were affected just the same.

I agree with all of those points. However, it's the third one that interests me. IT DEPENDS ON HOW MUCH OF A GAMER THEY ARE. Not too many people were into gaming enough to appreciate DC's lineup.

What was there to appreciate? The only game that took getting into was Shenmue...Soul Calibur and Sonic Adventure were fighting games and light action games respectively. Amazing in their genre, but easy to pick up and play.

Ok, uhhh
(having read the rest of your posts)

1) Where the heck do you get "win xbox 360 = can't afford 'real' computer" .. for all you know he (esp. being he's a massassian) has a ridiculously high-end computer. Winning something in no way leads to the implication that you can't afford something related to what you win .. this is completely nonsensical and non sequitur

2) He's getting it for free. Half of your arguments seem to stem from the notion that it's pointless to waste money when you could just buy a pc, etc etc .. I personally hate xbox, will not buy 360, and DO think it's a waste of money, but this is just ridiculous. HE'S GETTING IT FOR FREE. He got to drink the mountain dew that he bought. He's not wasting any money.

Yes he could play games on pc instead that will arguably run better, etc, etc
Obviously he wants an xbox 360
His reasons for wanting an xbox 360 are his own and do not necessarily lead to "omg my comp sux".
Maybe he wants to play games made for xbox 360 on an xbox 360 console
Add this to the fact that he doesn't have to pay ANYTHING for the system
Aaand there's absolutely no reason why he wouldn't get it
