I fear...

Darkness. I think it is a common phobia, but I fail to understand why it grips me so. Its somewhat of an awkward business. With lights on, and in day by day situations, I'll be the first to deny the existing of anything paranormal and I'm a fervent believer that there is no such thing as magic and what not.

Yet as soon as I find myself in darkness, not necessarily in the confort of my own apartment, but anywhere I'm not really used to, I either become uneasy or straight out terrified. If I'm walking down an empty street around two A.M. at night, alone, I'll quicken the pace and have an eerie feeling on my shoulders. Other times, say I have to go in the backyard of my place into the shed (which I have to unlock in pure darkness, and its settled in the pitch dark, nestled between the house and the hgh cedars that enclose our backyard where no light gets there) I'll begin to shake, look around terrified and as soon as I'm done my business, I'll run right back to the house as if something is chasing me. I've tried to fight it before, heck I once went for two hour walk in the woods without a flashlight or a light in the middle of the night, figuring that by the end of it, I'd be cured. No way. By the end of it I was running as fast as I could for the end of the woods, feeling like something huge and dangerous was chasing me. Frankly I was at the point that I thought I was hearing noises. By the time I reached the end, I was beyond petrified and its a wonder i did not faint. Lol.

Needless to say, I hate this phobia. I'm a grown man, I'm 21 and I just can't help it. I fear darkness.

What do you fear?

Bugs tend to freak me out, especially arachnids.

That feeling that something was chasing you... that was me. Mwahahahaha!

Fear... heights - Even in games. I remember playing Dark Forces the first time and there's that bit when you are jumping around some cliffs... yikes... or even playing JK the first time and that level with the aquaducts and you end up on some metalwork high above the water... yeeegh

The dark bothers me a little, but not to the degree it does Jeppy.

I used to be extremely afraid of heights.

Then I had to go abseiling for school. The adrenaline rush and feeling of safety it gave me, made me overcome it.

Wasps. Because one of the gits crawled over my eye once.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

Heart attacks. After hearing that I might get one in next 10 years has made things kinda icky.

I suppose I have no phobias, but of late I haven't much liked heights. Although I don't avoid them, perhaps for the same reason as you took your walk in the woods, to prove myself it's nothing. So when an opportunity arises, I usually go to high places. And living at the eight floor I can always use my balcony to have a look down...

But your thing with the darkness sounds a bit strong. I suppose humans have a natural tendency to be more cautious in the dark, as we aren't nocturnal creatures, and our senses are adapted to daytime.

Haha, good comeback! Truth always works!

As for my fears, I used to be very clumsy and forgetful. To counter it, these days I am paranoid and cautious sometimes. Also, I am afraid of sharp objects. I am always aware of sharp objects in a room and sometimes I will reposition knives and scissors for safety purposes out of habit.

Really? Man, I like sharp objects. Many, many years ago I bought a razor sharp, high quality lancet type paper knife. I was precision cutting paper with it, when suddenly the paper started to get bloody. The knife was so sharp I hadn't even realised or felt I had cut multiple times my fingers in the process of cutting the paper... That was fascinating.

I love knives. I own about a dozen of various size, shape, and legality.

I don't have any "fears". Note that I am not trying to sound tough or cool, I just am not habitually scared of anything. I become startled or frightened, but rarely do I ever become flat out scared.

I suppose I do have one fear, though.

There has only been one occasion that I can recall in which was I truly scared. A few months ago, some guys broke into my house (the second time in less than 6 months). The first time, we were away during the break in. The second time we were home when three guys broke in. They were armed. I was scared, but not for me; I was scared for my little brother (5), and my sister (14). They were asleep during the intrusion, but I was awake, doing a bit of studinyg. I was really, really scared of what might have happened. Things did end up going south, but my family wasn't hurt. That was the only time in my whole life where I was truly, honestly, completely scared. Oddly, the fear was not complete fear; it was a mixture of fear and utter rage. I was scared for my family, scared to the point I didn't want to move, yet I was so entirely furious that my fists became clenched and my veins popped out. It was a sensation I would like to never feel again.

I'm afraid of getting my eyes poked out. I'll freak out if anything gets near my face.
Sometimes I even have to pull my head back when I'm turning pages in a book. :gbk:

Fear--Crowds, clowns, and UltimatePotato, I have your fear, I freak out every time I'm in a computer lab at school because of all the pointy corners of the monitors and towers so close to your face, I have to pull my head back cause it freaks me out.

Clowns-most likely because when I was little my mom decorated my room as clowns, I didn't sleep much, and they scared the hell out of me. The first time I saw a real clown I was about 4 and I kicked it in the balls.

I used to think I attracted angry dogs too, until our neighbor's big dog was running loose and was barking at my 3 year old daughter. I snapped and the dog never crossed the street again. [no, I didn't kill it... but it did cross my mind...]

On an almost completely unrelated topic, I shot my neighbor's dogs with a BB gun once. My own dog was dying, and she kept hearing these two great morons woofing for no reason at all. They we quite loud, and she kept trying to get up to bark back, but she'd just fall back down. I went outside and started yelling at them to piss off, but that just made it worse. So I shot them a few times and they haven't been much of an annoyance since.
