I wasn't born yet when John Lennon was shot and killed in New York, but that doesn't make this day any less sad. Music is a very important part to many people's lives, and Lennon was no exception. To millions, he was the voice of their generation. Even today, twenty five years after his passing, there are kids out there hearing the Beatles for the first time, and John Lennon means something to them. He made some of the most seminal music of the century, and for that he will never be forgotten.

While I'm not that much of a fan, his destiny was still too ****ty for a person like him.

My hat's off to him.

(Though does anyone find it funny that there's a John Lennon thread on December 8th, but no historical thread on December 7th?)

As much as it is sad that ANYONE is killed, people should really get over it. Yes, he was a figure and a voice, but he was a person like any other deep inside.

Don't get me wrong, it is sad, but people really need to stop treating damn celebrities like freaking gods. They are no better than you and I, they just make millions and take drugs. *nods*

That did strike me as odd yesterday there was no Pearl Harbor thread.

I would have posted one but that event doesn't mean pretty much anything to me, except for cool video footage. ;)

Tragic ending to Lennon's peaceful life.

He's overrated, though.

Heh, Fark is doing a "Tragic Day in History" series today; they have such gems as "December 8, 1961. The birth of Ann Coulter." and "December 8, 1997. Spice Girls win the Billboard Music Awards album of the year, completing the downfall of pop culture."

I was looking for a Lennon thread. NME have a bunch of pages dedicated in month.

Did Pearl Harbour happen on Dec. 7th?

Just the same as the Lennon thing, why should people care about it?
nope.

Because that was the lives of hundreds (whether they were american or not, or if you are anti-american) and that was a troubling time where humanity failed. It has much more significance and is an icon that war is nothing good. Lennon just walked by the wrong nutcase. The only significance you might get from John's death is pretty much, don't have a crazy hater fan.

Some people's lives are worth more than others.

John Lennon was one of those people.

Utopia my ***. All the song is saying is that happiness comes from a complete lack of everything. Where is the sense in that? You can't have good without bad. All good is is the lack of evil.

Also, the line "no religion too" pisses me off. Religion is not a bad thing. Religion is something that causes great things and great happiness over and over. The problem is the idiots in the world who become fanatical about a cause, not the cause itself. We need causes and things to hope for, else what is there? Lucy in the sky with diamonds?

Aside from rappists, murderers and whatnot, no, his life wasn't worth more than anyone's. Not anymore than that poor girl's life who died from peanut allergies, or than my friend who died in a car accident last year, or your's, or mine. Or Mada's, or Whoopie Goldberg's, or George W. Bush's. Etc.

This guy wrote fricking songs while stoned, sang them, people liked it, people saw a message in it, people went OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG and there you have your wonderful human being who's life is worth so much more.

And I'm sure if you talked to John Lennon, he'd tell you exactly that!

A person who is delcared 'more valuable' than the common person is not reserved for a celebrity; its reserved for executives, monarchs and dictators.

Tony Blair? His life might be worth more than mine. George W. Bush? His life might be worth more than mine. Fidel Castro? His life is probably worth more than mine. All of these people, given their responsibilities, probably would accept that their lives are more important then the people they rule over.

But John Lennon... It's simply a ridiculous notion. He would never say that his life was more important than anybody elses.

Bono has probably effected more lives in a much deeper way than John Lennon.

I think some people's lives are worth more than others, and how much influence they've had certainly affects that. I think Whoopi Goldburg's life is worth more than the alcoholic husband who abuses his wife, George Bush's life is worth more than the bum on the corner who tries to wash my windshield with newspaper and spit, and that John Lennon's life was worth more than some nameless person who died when Pearl Harbor was attacked.
2005-12-09, 6:37 AM #37
I personally believe that influence is merely a matter of being at the right place at the right time.

That woman, her name eludes me, who got the woman's right notion going a couple decades ago... she died recently. She was merely at the right place at the right time, and said the right words at the right time.

Bono is influent, but merely because he has that power because he was a talented singer. Again, a degree of being at the right place at the right time.

I don't believe their life is worth more.

Oh, and yes, husbands who beat their wives, and sqweegies who do that **** for drug money or what not fit in the whatnot section in my post. :P
