Ever tasted an alkaline substance? (aka > 7 on the pH scale)? It tastes bitter, much in the same way that acids taste sour. So yes, a 14 would be very bitter. I wouldn't want to drink that.

Oh, and on an unrelated note, my science teacher was explaining last year to us the scientific method, and how to test things, and how we generally don't test things with our sense of taste. For you, however, I assume that is your main source to gather information from?
