Best console for RPGs
2004-06-04, 1:20 AM #1
Just a little thing I'd start becuase I'm going insane.

For me? It'd have to be the PSX/PS/PSone. Why? Well for one, there's games like Tales of Destiny, the majority of the wild arms series (The third one was good too...) Dragon Warrior 7, FF7/8/9/tactics, and a whole wad of others.[EDIT: Forgot about the Lunar Series...][[EDITx2: Brave Fencer Musashi]] Out of the N64, GB/GBA/GBC/GBAsp etc, PS2, XBox, and the GC, PSX has the most RPG games. You CANNOT beat classics like the one's mentioned above. It's just too... unreal to be able to beat something like that. Almost like levels these days don't beat classics like Drazen Isle, or JHS.

Anyways, I'm going to go back to my dark place... >_>

Basically any console that you can play a Zelda game on. Even the NES. Period [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

I loved the SNES version, then came the Gameboy "Zelda: Link's Awakening" which was something special (considering it was for the Gameboy), and then came "Zelda:OOT" (I'm not going to say anymore about this one, as we all know how good that was!!! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]). Still trying to get into Zelda:MM - haven't had enough time to sit down and play for any length of time, but it certainly seems different with a bit of Zelda-esque gameplay style.

Haven't got a Gamecube for the latest incarnations [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif] (well I'm sure it's nearly Christmas now... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif])

Someone told me they were redoing 7, 8, and 9 with 10's graphics for the PS2. That was in GI, as well as Square's site. Someone tell me this didn't fall through.

Hmm, I heard that first time back in 2001. It would be cool, although I'd just love to see revamped graphics and remade soundtracks... and maybe some other little stuff etc.

Oh, and SNES & PS1.

That's the stupidest analogy I've ever heard. If it were like that, then every game would be an RPG.

I'm sorry, but the only Zelda I considered an RPG was ALttP, just because it had most of the elements of it.

SNES RPG Lineup: Tales of Phantasia, FF4, FF5, FF6, Chrono Trigger, Radical Dreamers, Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, Illusion of Gaia, Breath of Fire 1, Breath of Fire 2, and the list goes on, and on, and on, and on...

I don't know. Are the FF games really RPGs? (Compared to games like Morrowind, Diablo, NWN etc.)

Um FF6? I know ff2 and ff3 were on SNES, but 6?

Also, I don't like the final fantasy series after ff2, because they limit you too much. You have to play a character or set of characters THEY create, you don't get to create your own and play the role YOU want to play. It's more like an interactive story-book than a role playing game.

I don't even consider Diablo an RPG. It's click as fast as you can. NWN's an RPG. Never really played Morrowind. For me, a traditional RPG has a party, a good story, and heaps of puzzles, usually.

After that I stopped paying attention because FF3 was so long and so boring.

That's because Japan didn't release the actual FF3 here in the states because it was considered "Too hard" for american noobs.

Wrong. Just about every gaming site will classify the Zelda series as RPG. Nintendo even classifies them as RPG. And I only say "just about every site" because I have not looked at some. But the greater majority of people will rule it as RPG.

I still stand by my original comment [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

I'm not playing devil's advocate or anything (well maybe a little [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]), but I honestly think of the Zelda series as RPG, especially the N64 versions. Just to be awkward ( [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]), if they aren't RPG games, then what cateogory/categories do people feel the Zelda series fall into? Just curious [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

(sorry if this is "thread hijacking" or considered to be a "tangent unsafe thread", but the question's an interesting one... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/redface.gif]))

Yeah. Doom is an RPG because you role-play as the Doom Marine.

Zelda is not a RPG in either the sense that it's a stat-based game nor does it involve roleplaying.
Everybody who says Zelda is a RPG needs to play a game of D&D. Final Fantasy may not be one verbatim, but it comes a hell of a lot closer than any Nintendo game (and that includes Fire Emblem)

p.s.: Playstation 2.

yeah back in the day when nintendo lumped all their first party games into categories zelda was put under "adventure"

though this doesn't mean very much since there was no RPG category to my knowledge and even games like SMB were put under "adventure"

but when it comes down to it the zelda series of more action-adventure than rpg with zelda 2 being the closest since i belive it did has a system for leveling up

I don't know many video games where you role-play.

The stat stuff is the thing that usually destroys real role-playing in pen & paper RPGs. When people start only to play to improve their character it's not any more playing the role of a fictional character. That's what I realy like at Call of Cthullhu RPG (pen & paper) where you don't have many stats and values [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

The best role-playing I had so far was multiplayer Neverwinter Nights.

And for me the best system is still the PC.

I didn't play FF tough.

It depends what kind of RPGs you want. If you want more free-roaming RPGs, PC is your thing. More linear turn-based RPGs go for the PS2 (Or SNES). For MMORPGs, its all about the PC
