Here in New Zealand, just about everyone refers to their long-term bf/gf as their partner too. Not sure why.

Last week while on a hike in the mountains, I heard one American tell another person about the use of the "partner" word. They seemed amazed by this

although it was funny seeing geb get into my car, a little renault cilo, I had the seat all the way back and I swear his knees were nearly as high as his chest when sitting down in the car...

I won't mention what the journey back from meeting Paul was like...bloody english country roads, no signs...ggrr, I live in the damn country and couldn't make my way back without side trips down farmers tracks gated roads...it was a laugh though.
