We ought really to redefine the question..
Imagine the evolutionary step just before we arrive at 'chicken'. We'll call this creature a 'hicken'.
Imagine the evolutionary step just before we arrive at 'egg'. We'll call this object a 'hegg'.
The question now becomes - did the hicken lay a hegg? Or more precisely, did the hicken evolve into a chicken before or after the hegg evolved into an egg?
It would be my understanding that the evolutionary progress of the 'egg' line would occur a lot sooner than that of the 'chicken' line, as the development of a hardened shell to protect chicklets (or hicklets) would be of a more immediate importance to survival. So what we now consider to be an 'egg' would have evolved a lot sooner than even the evolution of the hicken, so the hicken would lay an egg, from which a chicken would emerge.
So, answer: egg.
[Edit: Oh, yeah, this is all 'assuming' evolution is true yadayada]
