What's the deadliest part of half-life 2? (not a poll)
2006-01-21, 6:55 PM #1
I used to think it might be jumping over a broken bridge in a car, or speeding up to a train head-on, or the speedboat sequence, or perhaps fighting on top of the citadel... but I have discovered the deadliest place in half-life 2.
Tried and true, 5x in a row.

On top of the two file cabinets IS THE DEADLIEST PLACE in HL2. It must be where G-man holds his secret documents.

i disliked the part where you were in the prison and you could set up turrets, but waves and waves of combine and manhacks would just keep coming through those force feilds you cant go through but they can at either of the 4 entrances.

took me a while to beat that.

It's rough, ya.

I managed to get on top of those filing cabinets, but nothing seemed to happen.

this place is in the Water hazard section, near where you have to go to open the first pair of doors blocking the waterway (where the exploding drums release the steel I-beam that smashes the doors open) , right?

Why would getting on top of the cabinets kill you?

Deadliest part? Attempting to do the Antlion section without any weapons or running (walking only).

A better question is: why are there filing cabinets in a building like that? Even better question: why are there so many oil cans in the game?

Did anyone notice there is like so many random oil barrels in streets, towns, buildings, beach shores, closets, water pools, garbage areas, etc? Does a world really need so many unsafe containers of fuel?

It's so you always have something to use the Gravity gun with.

The part I don't understand is why you can pick up huge heavy things with the gravity gun, but you can't pick up headcrabs with it.

If you get in the right position and stop ducking, theres a, yes, physics glitch that kills you for standing up into a beam or something.

but you can pick up combine soldiers with it near the end of the game, and they're organic to some extent.

the gravity gun is different at that point. duh.

Yeah, the deadliest part was probably where the manhacks and overwatch rush the fields in the prison. I remember running out of health to the point where I camped a crevice with a shotgun and simply waited as they searched for me; once they appeared in view, I would blast them but not move out of the crevice, in fear of exposure. I couldn't handle the last few in a straight fight so scaredy-cat camping was the solution.

Also, the ant-lion paths were troubling if you made a wrong turn or stopped for too long. Yeah, that became problematic quick.

Otherwise, the whole game was filled with small difficulties throughout that made it enjoyable without too much frustration.

For me the deadliest part was where you open the floodgates by having that big beam swing down and knock the doors open. First time I played HL2 the game crashed there (if that's not deadly I don't know what is!).

Any of the times that ****ing helicopter chases you.

That part in the prison where you set up the three turrets while you're waiting for Alex is hard, but you can just stack boxes in the entrances and then the combine can't get in.

For me, the deadliest part was the beach approach to Nova Prospect because in the midst of all of the thumpers, grenades, ant lions, combine, and just sheer mayhem my video card burned out.

For me, the part right after you pick up the shotgun in Ravenholm and those..... things..... attack you from all directions. Not only deadly, but scary as hell.

They kick them in. Trust me that was one of the defense strategies I had set up. ;)

I agree. I HATE fast zombies. Those screaming sounds they make while they're jumping around on the buildings freaked me out the first time I played through Ravenholm.

However, it's fun to empty a shotgun blast into them at point-blank while they're climbing up the drainpipes. I wait until they almost get to the top, and then BLAM!

Regular zombies and poison zombies are slow enough to almost be avoided entirely in many situations, so they're a minimal threat.

for me, that part where oyu have to get to the vortigaunt camp w/o touching the sand was the hardest part, b/c everytime you make a mistake and fall off or miss a jump, ant-lions come out. Ant-lions are the most dangerous enemy in the game, I feel, b/c they're fast and they attack in groups. Plus, no matter where you go, they can get to you by flying, so its pointless to run away. Ant lion guards aren't so bad as long as you have plenty of explosive things around.
2006-01-21, 11:02 PM #23
I got through the turret part by just picking up a turret, holding onto it, and running around and standing next to combines. It was too much of a pain to try to keep picking them up and setting them down.
2006-01-21, 11:06 PM #24
I went back and carried the other turrets to the second turret part.

Those Combine suckas didn't stand a chance.

Me too. Best strategy. Also, I found that you can use primary fire on the gravity gun against the headcrabs. Doesn't kill them right away, but after about 5 shots it will.

Apart from the already stated turret bits, I remember something with one of those Combine aircrafts and a very narrow underside of a bridge or something like that. That was tense.

have they fixed that problem with one of the last levels of the game?

You remember that room with all the laser trips in it, where you gotta dodge them all to get out the other side?

if you hit one the doors lock and turrets go off, problem is that if you throw an item in there to trip the lasers, the doors slam shut never to open again, i complained about it but i havent played since.

Isn't that impossible? I thought you had to use the car to jump one of the broken bridges when you face off against a gunship.

Wow, how could I forget Ravenholm? That s*** was scary at times just because of the fast zombies. Thank god for shotties.

All this talk of HL2 makes me want to go play it again. Hmmm... it is very gloomy today... and I'm off from work. I think I will.

Not the car part. The section after, when you are running around jumping on junk to live.

Damn straight! I've only managed to beat that part without cheating ONCE. I died like 15-20 times one night trying to beat it. Whenever I play through the game now, I don't even bother playing that sequence without turning on god mode. Its just too freaking hard to beat it without it.

The poison headcrabs and the zombies covered in them are far worse. It only takes one bite for them to get your health to only 1 point! You have to take cover fast in order to buy time to have your health regenerate back. Otherwise, you're screwed.

The best way to deal with poison zombies is to take them out at a distance with grenades, if you have any. They seem to ignore everything going on around them, so they will walk right on top of your grenade while it goes off (combine soldiers run away or kick the grenade back to you, so this won't work with them).

Basically, throw a grenade at the poison zombie, take cover behind something so it can't throw a headcrab at you, and repeat as necessary. The splash damage takes care of the headcrabs riding on the zombie, so you don't have to worry about those like you would if you used a gun.

Rockets would be better, but they're too scarce and valuable to waste on zombies, but grenades are fairly plentiful. If you don't have any grenades, just run away.

I hate headcrabs.

Especially poison ones.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

The fast zombies piss me off the most. I started the game again earlier, and I'm at the point where I just killed the second gunship with the rocket launcher near the pile of cars. Still got a ways to go.

Anyone else remember when someone here killed himself with one of the zombie traps and posted a thread about it? He was all like, "What's the point of a thing that kills you when you turn it on?" Haha, that was funny.

Anyway, the part where you wait for Alyx was really easy for me for some reason. I just blocked the entrances with boxes and then hid in one of the cubbys that the turrets were in. Then I blasted combine soldiers with the shotgun every time they ran up to the entrance, and used the gravity gun to suck in the ammo they dropped. Woooo

there's a crate of rockets in the van near there, so take time to play with the rocket launcher when you have a source of infinite ammo on hand. The better you are at controlling the rockets, the less likely that gunships will shoot them down. The cool thing about gunships is that the back is completely undefended, so the trick is to get your rocket to hit the gunship from behind. That's where practice with the rocket launcher comes in.

Also, don't forget to stock up on rockets before you leave the area, b/c you may need them later before oyu get to nova prospekt and rocket ammo doesn't come around very often.

In that room, there is actually a "blind spot" to hide from all the turrents. It won't help you though.
