I don't think all movies today are crap, and i don't just think that flashy special effects make the movie. some of the best movies i've seen recently are Majestic, A Beautiful Mind, and K-Pax, and they have no CGI in them whatsoever, unless they were too subtle to notice, although i can't think of a reason for them to have been in there

You could also throw films like Magnolia, Memento and Requiem for a Dream in there, no need for particularly crazy CG graphics, just a great plot and great actors. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

I'm pretty sure A Beautiful Mind had CGI.

So did K-pax, but only for brief 1-second scenes.

well, msot of it was not like fight scenes or anything that revolved around CGI to make it work. i just remembered the CGI in Beautiful Mind, but that was jsut for his hallucinations, or connection,s or whatever you want to call that. in K-Pax, again it wasn't anything big, the only thing i can remember it being for would be the stardome scene, and that can be done with a real stardome, its jsut faster this way.

In the Bourne Identity, they use CG for nice touches, rather than basing the whole scene on it - for example, when Bourne's on the TGV (Train Grande Vitesse), it's a set, with a CG tunnel wall flying past his window, there's also some birds flying that are CG: I reckon when used sparingly, CG can really help a film. Every so often there is a slight drop in movie quality because of something made to make films better! When color first came out, movies kind of sucked! The quality was bleh, and they tried to do new different things with it. Same with CGI, it is KIND of new, within the decade maybe and people are testing it out.

Recently I was thinking about childhood memories for todays youth as it relates to movies. I was six when Star Wars came out and grew up with the films. There were also a few other neat movies such as the King Kong remake and TV shows like Star Trek in sindication and several others that we grew up with in the '70s and '80s that stick in our minds.

I don't think there's a huge lack of TV shows that some may find memorable now but there is nothing like Star Wars for the kids of today. MAYBE LotR but not really. That was only two years from start to finish. Star Wars took us from 77-83 and gave us TONS of toys.

I wish I was a kid again.

To address the tangent of comic films, as it relates to the modern Marvel films, I pretty much like them all. I guess I'm in the minority who like Daredevil and the Hulk. The only thing about the Hulk that irritated me was the stupid stuff dealing with his father and their climatic fight. Other than that, I think Blade, Blade II, Spiderman, X-Men, X-Men 2, Daredevil, The Hulk, and The Punisher were all quite entertaining at a minimum.

I agree about blade/blade 2. Both were good.

I think the first was a better all around movie. The second was entertaining but not as well rounded. IMO.

CGI has been around for a LONG time now. ONly within the last ten years however, has it become widely used. I don't think it's so much of testing it out as it's an addiction. We know what CGI can do. It can do any damned thing you please. The problem is that it's very rapidly becomming over used. It's lost it's charm. The public can tell what's real and what isn't. As has been said, CGI is a TOOL that when used should help improve a movie. It is NOT supposed to do your entire film for you. Unless, of course, your film is supposed to be entirely computer generated. I think this is something directors comprehend, but don't do.

Use it, don't abuse it.

Quite right. Movies that are pure CGI (like the stuff that pixar puts out) usually tend to be quite good.

There are quite a few good quality games still coming out. And yes I think it is more than obvious that it is starting to happen, as there are a lot of dud titles.

I partially agree.

Most movies seem to have weak endings. It's like the wirters come up with some really good ideas but cant think of how to finish them.

Like the Matrix series. I loved it right up to the very end. That wrecked it all. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

I don't know, the games industry seems to be churning out a lot of games that are all just...the same.. A few more WW2 games, some Vietnam ones, a bunch of Star Wars games, a handful of stealth-em-ups.. Few seem to be willing to really take a risk and try something new and different (like Sam and Max 2).
There are exceptions, though, like Armed and Dangerous. But with broadband increasingly becoming the standard, I think massively multiplayer games will be the next big thing.

seriously though, I love classic Disney movies...I think Mulan was the last decent animanted Disney movie (musical) (that was after Aladdin right? because that one was good too) I haven't been excited to see a movie since RotK. The "summer blockbusters" are just hot actors and special effects.

The butchering of movies makes me sad. Please make it stop.
