PCGamer's 2005 Game of the Year Awards
2006-01-31, 2:07 PM #1
Here is a list of the big winners from PCG's latest issue:

2005 Game of the Year: Battlefield 2
Action Game of the Year: F.E.A.R.
RTS Game of the Year: Age of Empire III
TBS Game of the Year Civilization IV
MMORPG of the Year: Guild Wars
RPG of the Year: Dungeon Siege II
Best Multiplayer Game: Battlefield 2
Best Simulation: Silent Hunter III
Best Adventure Game: Indigo Prophecy
Best Sports Game: Tiger Woods PGA Tour '06
Best Value: Guild Wars
...and some other miscellaneous awards.

Note that the GOTY could not have been selected for anything else except for best MP game.

What do you think of their choices? What was your favorite PC game of the year?

My favorite was Civ 4, hands down. I put more time into that game than any other by far, and it had multiplayer that worked, for once. Call of Duty 2 was excellent as well.

Apologies in advance if an obvious choice isn't in the poll.

I juggled between Dungeon Siege 2, CoD2, and GTA:SA, but I settled on GTA:SA. Would have said Lumines, but alas.

I didn't play half of those games... more than half. I'm going to go into one of those "behind gaming times" streaks again.

Of those games, I've only played City of Villains.

I voted other. I've played plenty of indy games and side-project games that I liked better.

LumINES .

There was no other game worth playing compared to this game.
2006-01-31, 3:46 PM #11
I only played GTA:San Andreas for 15 minutes. I've not played a single one of those games, otherwise.

DoD:S and CS:S ftw.

Indeed. I have been playing that (<3 the newly released maps) and HL2. Before that I played the Battlefield 2 demo, which is my only glance at any of those games on the poll's list.

Unfortunately, I am not getting a system upgrade or new rig for 3 yrs; my laptop and I are going to be cuddly for the long haul. I will be fasting from gaming, but at least I can check out screenshots.

BF2 sucked. DOD:S and CS:S should be on that list, I agree with Wolfy.

Well, technically CS:S was released last year, but I see your point with DOD:S. I guess my choice of poll options wasn't as good as it could have been.

Well, argumentatively, CS:S is still being released ^_^

That's true, Kirby. Some of the maps they've released this year were excellent.

Pong.

I haven't played any recent PC games because I don't have a PC good enough to do so.

Although I only played the demo, BF2 was indeed awesome. I loved the vehicles (can't beat speeding around with a jeep or landing a team with blackhawk), the squad play, and the large maps. I just wish that the weapons had some difficulty in their usage.

Of those choices, I'd say Indigo Prophecy. Unlike past years, there wasn't one game (on PC anyway) that really stood out for me this year.

I thought Battlefield 2 was pretty bad compared to its predecessors.

Agreed. Where BF1942 was a polished and shined game, BF2 felt almost arcade in it's horrible textures and some of the poorly completed levels.

 Since when was BF1942 polished?

I went with Age of Empires III. It's a most satisfying experience.

GTA:SA.

Seriously, that game finally destroyed my editing motivation just because it was that fun :p

Only games from this year I've played are GTA:SA and GW. Of the two, I've sunk more time into GW because its more fun.

Definately looking forward to this year though. Oblivion, Spore, maybe STALKER? Gonna be a good year for games.

Because we all know the way a game looks has so much to do with how fun it is to play.

What levels did you have issues with? I've always found that the levels are fine. It's just a matter of the team you have and the amount of temawork you use.

I've only played 3 of those games, and I'm going to Avenger - BF2 is great.

Other 2 I played - GTA:SA was fun, but nothing amazing.
COV on the other hand was just a rehash of COH, an excuse to add in PvP.
nope.
