Reagan's state funeral
2004-06-11, 7:40 AM #1
I just thought it was appropriate to start a thread for anyone who wanted to share any thoughts on the funeral today. Please keep this thread civil out of respect for the departed.

I felt that the funeral was quite a spectacle with so many current and former world leaders. All the eulogies seemed appropriate and painted a wonderful picture for someone who was so loved and hated at the same time. It felt refreshing to see old rivalries pushed to the side for the moment to recognize a leader who cared so much for his country. I wish I could have been there, but it was still an honor to watch and listen to what so many people had to say.

I wish I would've seen it. I get a bunch of crappy free satellite channels, of which BBC News is the least crappy, and FastGamerr told me they broadcast it live.

Both Clintons slept through the service.

Other than that, it was very nice. There was a group of completely heartless people standing outside the route Nancy Reagan was taken as the funeral motercade arrived:

These people say Reagan was an evil man. I think their actions prove exactly who the evil one is.

I know, Charoziak. But there will always be such people in the world.

I was watching the casket approach Andrews AFB and I truly felt sad. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

The funeral was on 15 channels, 2 in Spanish, and 3 owned by NBC.

Those people are disgusting. It's the gothatesfags.com group. They did it after 9/11 (saying that America deserved it and all the people who died in the towers, the firemen, the police officers, etc, were in hell) and at the funeral of Mr. Rogers (He was a presbyterian minister, and the godhatesfags people think that they are too soft on homosexuality) with signs that say he's in hell, they did the same at Matthew Shepherd's funeral.

The worst part is that non-Christians start thinking this is what Christians are like. Actual Christians feel about these people the way that Muslims feel about Islamic terrorists.

They are not Christians. Simple as that. Proof? If there was a crowd of a thousand believers, and one sinner, who would Jesus seek out and spend time with?

Reagan understood that. And because he acted without hate, but kindness, he comes under fire from the far far far far far radical right.

When that camera panned over to Bill and my dad and I saw his eyelids closed, we both bursted out laughing. And then it only got better when we noticed Hillary nodding off, too.

Those protesters make me sick. I'm for freedom of speech, but protesting along a funeral route is about as tasteless as it gets.

I thought that the eulogies were very well done, and the music was beautiful.
It is very refreshing to hear intelligent people speak, especially with those stupid people outside.

Is it just me, or do those signs look photoshopped?

The funeral was phenomenal.

A great send off to the savior of the world we have all inherited.

You can disagree with the man's politics but he was what we needed when we needed him.

Please don't turn this glorious event into an excuse to disparage the Clintons. I don't know if Bill was actually falling asleep or not but this is bigger than them.

The funeral was very upliftint and positive.

Let's all try to remember and do the right thing. Remember, if you're an American, you are on the time that the sacrifices of others have borrowed for you.

RIP RWR 1911-2004

<Dormouse> i have this urge to go on a rant in the reagan state funeral thread
<Dormouse> but i'm lazy
<Dormouse> like.. it's probably been at least [makes up number] 10 years since i've heard or seen anything about him. then suddenly he dies and it's massive silly international news
<Dormouse> the vast majority of people probably have hardly even /thought/ of him outside of a history class since he stopped being president
<Flirbnic> I haven't heard of anything he did that wasn't horrible
<Dormouse> and it's not like he was in the middle of some great humanitarian project, or had newly spawned offspring to care for, or was cut down in the prime of his youth
<Simbachu> He was the oldest president though.
<Simbachu> No former president have ever been 93.
<Dormouse> i mean he was in his bloody 90s, had alzheimers, i don't know how serious his case was, but still, it's very likely reagan as everyone knew him disappeared a fair while ago anyways
<Dormouse> he was good and damn ready to die i think
<Simbachu> As Bush said.
<Dormouse> stupid people making a huge thing abuot it, trying to show everyone how pious they are, and how they loved reagan and go make some pilgrimage to get years off of purgatory or something
<Dormouse> i'm just like dude, he's dead.. give hima break already
<Dormouse> and honestly, from the bits i remember from contemporary us history courses, i can't really think of anything i'd mourn him for
<Ford> he wasnt a bad actor. we should be remembering him for his westerns, not his presidency
<Flirbnic> They're going to kill Bush senior soon, for campaign purposes
<Dormouse> i think i'll just post the log
<Dormouse> can't be arsed to re-type
<Mort-> I think it's ridiculous how Tony Blair went to mourn Reagan. He's a labour politican! He should be hating republicans.

Nixon died several years back. I watched the funeral. Seems to me it was noticed. Still, even though he was a popular president and was not without accomplishments, he ended up leaving office disgraced.

Nixon resigned from office, so he didn't get the presidential treatment. It was a shame that he didn't, but I guess it's one of those things based off a technicality.

Also, I saw a cartoon in the paper yesterday that I felt was a perfect description of Reagan's funeral: one frame shows a donkey and elephant boxing; the next one shows them both battered and bruised, heads down in front of Reagan's casket. I wish I could dig it up online, but I'm not getting anything yet.

I'm not sure if Regan was a Christian or not. But I do know he was a great leader and did a good job. I also know that those people will have ample time to find out for them selves weather he is or not. I doubt they'll find him.
How bout a "Godhatespeoplewhousehisnametomakehatesites.com" site, or a "Godhatessinners" site with pics of those people. And for good measure we'll hack their sites and put a back groud on it that say's "were loosers who will soon be in hell" on it. Or a "thisiswhyGodhatesamerica" site, with links to thier site!

I was listening to Michael Savage yesterday and he was, suprisingly, criticizing the Reagan funerals. One thing he mentioned that Reagan is claimed as someone who brought all races, nationalities, etc, etc, together, but almost everyone at his funeral(the friday one) were elite whites. He says this is going to hurt the Republican Party's image.

He also thinks that this is going on for too long. He thought it could have ended on Wednesday and now it is almost getting to the point of vulgarity. He also criticized how the private funeral on friday is being broadcasted around the world.

Just a few things I would like to point out.

Savage...goes too far. The whole reason why it went on for this long is because the public wanted it. The people LOVED Reagan (see 1984 election returns and approval rating when leaving office)
