Reagan's state funeral
2004-06-12, 12:13 PM #41
I have no way of supporting this claim but I have heard on the radio and a tv news program this week that Nixon asked not to recieve a full state funeral.

I think the media covered some aspects of the services to closely. Did we have to watch his wife cry at the graveside? For her I wish they had backed off a bit.

As for almost only elite whites being at the funeral...It seemed to me that people from almost every race and leaders from many nations were there in that church, they even had Jewish and Muslim clergy take part. Heck, some of the elite whites were Democrats so if anyone looks down on the republican party because not enough races were at a former president's funeral and assume that means he didn't care about bringing people together they are just a bit to cynical in my book.

Have you taken a look at our congress? The whole funeral was made up primarily of politicians and dignitaries, so why would anyone be so surprised to see white people as the majority?

MortHog get it through your thick ****in skull. Just becuase Blair mourns Reagen doesn't mean hes a hypocrit. He is mourning A HUMAN BEING that DIED. He's not supporting Reagens political beliefs in any way. Your idea that nobody can mourn Reagen unless they agree with his political beliefs is so retarded it makes me want to spew chunks all over your face. I hope you die slowly.

Score two for human decency? I guess it would have been more ironic had you been the person who was talking about that originally..

I should note actually that Mort tried somewhat to dissuade me:

<Mort-> you totally shouldn't have posted that.
<Dormouse> no?

<Mort-> The point of that thread, and two others like it, is for everyone to look like a 'good guy' and facelessly mourn some dead guy they probably never cared about.
<Mort-> Sensible, critical, objective discussion has no place in it.</font>

After he finishes his slow death, will you mourn him despite disagreeing with his opinion?

Yep. Apparrently, quite a few people think that parading a dead man through the streets for prolonged periods of time is respectful.

By doing so you're making this thread become uncivilized. See Mort-Hog and Raoul Duke.

Everyone, please stay on-topic and stop posting random crap.

Personally, I thought that Bush, Sr. by far gave the best eulogy.

Lady Thatcher's preprared statement was great. The elder Bush was great. The Bush men can get quite emotional and I was waiting for him to get choked up, which he did. Current President Bush gave a quite positive and uplifting speach which was a great way to end the service.

Regarding Nixon, it's not that he didn't get a presidential funeral because he resigned. He just didn't request a state funeral. He certainly could have. Supposedly Johnson had one but nobody seems to remember that. Kennedy's the last one that people seem to remember and that was for a sitting president.

I don't think it was inappropriate for them to show the private burial. Many Americans feel robbed because we basically lost Reagan ten years ago. I think it was gracious that they shared so much of this time with us now.

Regarding mostly elite whites at the service... meh. Most public figures and politicians are "elite whites" I guess. Seems that the crowd mostly reflected the makeup accurately. I use to listen to Savage. He's not on where I live now. He's great for entertainment value. Not sure if I would go much further than that.

If Nancy et al. approved the showing of the private funeral, it's ok then, I think. Otherwsie I don't think it should have been shown.

I had wanted to say about Nixon that he certainly did have a presidential funeral. Just not the full-blown spectacle like Reagan's.

(In my defense, I'd like to point out that I never actually posted that on this thread. Lay all blame on Dormouse)
