I work at Safe Navigation, INC. I just started last friday, and so far, its the best damn job i've ever had. My main duties involve working on navigational charts in photoshop, and updating latitude/longitude locations of buoys that are floating everywhere aroundthe world (see, the company sells books that have the locations of these things, and it has to be updated constantly because buoys get knocked off course, added, removed, etc.)
My pay starts at $9.00 hr , and after I've been there a few weeks and can prove my worth, my boss promised me that he would raise my wage to $12 / HR. I got to choose my own hours and it's really flexible. I do other stuff as well like stock shelves, collate/run off copies, sort navigational charts/put them in order, etc.

sometimes, i have to do some heavy lifting, for example we buy xerox paper in bulk, and it arrives on pallets loaded with about 80 boxes. The boxes contain about 6 reams of paper each, and each box weighs about 30-40 lbs. I had to unload all 80 boxes by myself yesterday, woke up really sore today. In about a week and a half we use up all that paper, so I'll have to do it again.

Anyway, post where you work.

I'm a Sales Order Processor for Sayers, which is a bakery chain in the North West of England (meaning I'm probably the only person here who's heard of them :o). Basically I sit at a computer for four hours every Saturday and type in what their shops sold, threw out, etc. Pays at £5.05 ($8.86) an hour, which isn't too bad, but since I only work four hours a week (unless it's a holiday, when I might get called in during the week) I don't get all that much money. So I'll probably be looking for a new job around the summer time to help pay for uni.

Done anything round the UK yet? My dad works for Trinity House Lighthouse Service, which is the UK government department that deals with all the aids to navigation round the UK, he's worked with the Navy and transferred across along with his rank of Captain to work as the Inspector of Seamarks for Trinity. If you look at any of your charts for England and Wales they should all have come from Trinity.

As for me, I'm a physics post-grad (doing my Masters) so technically don't really have a job.

When I actually start my PhD course in september I'll be paid a subsistance of £230 (~$400) per week to live off and any expenses like plane flights and stuff will be paid for also.

Currently I do marking for certain undergrad courses and help out in a few classes for a couple of hours. In total I do about 7 1/2 hrs work a week and get paid £11 per hour, ~ $19-$20 per hour. Pretty good pay really and keeps my basic physics knowledge topped up :)

My main job is at an animal clinic here in town. There's only two bad things about the job: my boss is scary (beyond words scary,) and the people...well, they don't really know how to deal with people, only animals. I got the job by saying I was seriously considering becoming a pre-vet major if I didn't get accepted into nursing...actually I left out that "if I didn't get accepted thing." This is like $6.00/hour.

Then my other job is just basic science and English tutoring. This job is painful even though it's $7.45/hour. I'm also considering picking up a third job which is basically being an orientation leader over the summer as well as a mentor to my orientation bunch over their freshman year. This pays about $8.50/hour

Eh...

Art director and production manager in for a graphic design company. My job mainly consists of dispatching work, managing the team, giving criticism and tips on jobs and overall ensuring a decent rate of production.

Our company mainly creates printed advertisement, but we also have a department that does XXL print. I have approximatly a half a million dollars worth of equipment and manslaves under my responsibility.

Pays like crap, but its a great experience and loads of fun.

My pay is the regular conscript salary, 76 SEK (~$10)/day.

Please also post what the minimum wage rate is where you reside.

In California, the rate is $6.75/hr minimum, although most entry-level jobs start at $7 or $8 ($9 or $10 for more intensive jobs).

I started at Chuck E. Cheese's as a Gameroom Attendant in December, then I got promoted. I'm now a trainer.

When I'm not training a newbie, I just wait on tables and fix the games when they break. It's okay, except I hate dealing with all the stupid customers. I want them all to die when their car explodes after driving over one of the many potholes leading into the Chuck E. Cheese parking lot.

I've also learned to hate children. I need to get a different job, and fast.

Oh, and minimum wage is $7.45, but I'm probably wrong. I make $7.85.

Produce Buyer: It's really more a recieving and distribution job for the housing organization where I live. I recieve a produce order in the morning, inventory it, load some on to a truck for delivery, then go pick up another order. On the way back, I deliver cases of produce to houses. Hours are 5:30 to 8:00 or 8:30 in the morning on MWF. Get paid for twn hours a week at $11.70 and hour. It directly compensates my rent, so i don;t have to pay taxes on it. Usually takes 2.5 hours of work a day.

Lacrosse Coach: I'm an assisant coach for the varsity team at my former high school. It's M-F, 3:30-6:00 in the afternoon, although that varies depending on the game schedule. I'm coach the defensive unit. $1000 sum for the season, which isn't all that much, but it's a really fun job.

Lacrosse Referee: I ref middle school lacrosse games on the weekends. I choose how much I want to work and where I want to work. I have 23 games in the next three weekends($920 for 6 days of work). It pays $40 a game, which take 1.5 hours each ($26.67 an hour). High school games pay $60 each, but my coaching schedule doesn't really let me do that. I love this job because it's really fun. I get to be outside, running around.

I'm a temp, doing admin for Camden council's planning department. Pretty brainless, but I have flexi hours (arrive between 8-10am and leave between 4-6pm) and can listen to music all day, so it's not too bad. Just got a raise, so I'm on about £300 a week ($522).

I work for T-Mobile. I'm a sales rep. I sell wireless phones to businesses and to consumers who get coprorate discounts through their place of employment. Base pay is $8.00 per hour, plus bonuses, (usually puts me about $13 - $15 per hour).

I work at Wal*Mart at the layaway counter. It is my responsibility to box, store, retrieve, and manage our layaway customers' accounts. Seeing as it is the slow time of the year for layaways, I often find myself mixing paint, making keys, helping customers in hardware, furniture, and housewares, and doing any odd jobs management may assign me. I enjoy my job because I have a great deal of freedom (moreso than any other wage-earner in the store), and I'm basically a runner, doing a little bit of everything, which I enjoy. I make $8.40/hr. Minimum wage here is $5.15/hr.

I find it humorous that Page considers 30-40 pounds heavy lifting. :D I routinely handle stuff in the 80-120 pound range, although sometimes with help. ;)

I'm working full time just for this year before I go to uni at Rolls-Royce in Derby, UK.

I work in an e-learning team where we basically maintain the current form of on-line training we have, promote new on-line learning and stuff. My job specifically ranges from part time intranet web editor to dealing with signups we get and lots of misc stuff.

Pay is pretty good considering i'm 17 atm, (18 in March). £11,000 for the year.

If any undergrads or pre-uni peeps in the UK want info about how to get set up with a job in your gap year, try out www.yini.org.uk. Its basically a charity who set people up with a decent job in their gap (or sandwich) year. Only costs £25 to join and thats it.

Pretty good opportunity really, a years worth of experience, especially at a high profile company, adds to my CV nicely.

I work at the help desk in the Library on campus, and also tutor students who need extra help in math and physics. Tutoring is one of the most fulfilling jobs I've ever had, and it really is true that teaching material to other people helps you to understand it even better yourself.

This summer though, I hope to work as an Assistant Forest Ranger for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

How many times do you have to lift these things, and how many of these things do you have to move? I can lift 120 lbs without too much trouble, 40 lbs is no problem at all. It's just that when you have to move 80 of the things all by yourself from the receiving area to an office upstairs in less than an hour, you eventually get tired. ;)

I just started, so I haven't seen any charts or buoy entries from that area yet. Most of our chart-related stuff comes from the US Government.
