Unless I misunderstood, it looks like once you reach the intergalactic level, there's not much to do.

Grant, from the sounds of it, the game assimilates other people's worlds then assumes control over them in your game - I guess it stops vindictive other gods destroying your planet while you're still a spore all the time!

Exactly. The whole thing is like a bunch of minigames. When it really boils down there just isn't a lot to do.

Granted, I'd make an arena to fight my many monsters in, challenging my friends to build better monsters. I'm sure, however, you could eventually discover the game's logical "perfect" monster and use that.

The blowing up of the world had me almost falling out of my chair laughing. That was hilarious.

He talks about that in the video, the 'goal oriented gaming, before the sandbox'. You'd think that a community filled with editors would love that. Personally I am looking forward to having fun playing god, err, uh, evolution? And making me a galaxy of different styles of creatures, architecture, and so on.

I wonder if other planets can get UFOs as well...

My question exactly...will UFOs come and abduct members of your race as well?

By the way, that procreation sequence had me laughing my head off.

So is it multiplayer or not? :P

It isn't. Other people's creations are downloaded onto your computer and used to populate the world. But you don't interact with other people other than creations being automatically shared.

What would really make this game cool is if you continued to encounter threats as you progressed to the spacefaring age. As in, as you grew into an empire, other huge empires would arrive (possibly from other galaxies?) then you'd have to fight to maintain control over your empire. Then, after you'd defeated your enemies, you'd eventually ascend to a higher plane of existance, where you'd have to assist another culture evolving in the galaxy by attempting to protect them from the enemies you left behind. This would be different, as you have no direct control, just control over natural things or something like that. Of course there'd be other powerful beings...

Okay, maybe that's not a great idea, but still. Spore looks pretty cool.

Looks like this is one game I'm not buying then!

The scale bothers me a bit. I don't want to have to deal too much with other users' content, if I'm going for that SP feel, because a bunch of kids will just make walking penises and stuff. I know it's an option, so that's a bit encouraging.

I need to read more, the video doesn't entirely explain how you download content from other players, which the AI then just works with from there.

You don't download content from other players, the game does. And I have a feeling walking penises wouldn't get past the tribe stage, probably...

Well, he has to interact with people somehow, if not in real life, then in games and forums.

as it stands from the GDC (dunno if they've made any changes), your content would automatically be uploaded to the master server, along with everyone else's, and then the server would distribute what it "thought" would be best to populate your environment based on whatever criteria.

so it's like the sims, only automatic.
Moo.

Basically an Elemist simulator?

-I kinda get the feeling this is what this is. I'm so gonna name my profile "Crayak".

<3

I'm totally naming my character The Elemist.

I wish I still had my entire collection of those books... I sold half of em to a friend.
2006-03-06, 6:52 PM #62
Crayak, that's goooood.
2006-03-06, 7:11 PM #63
I like how you both spelled Ellimist wrong.

I don't like the fact that I still remember that. :p
2006-03-06, 7:25 PM #64
Damn, I need to re-read those. At least the ones I own, up into the thirty somethings. I'm totally making Andalite and Hork-Bajir races. Oh, and Taxxons, too!
2006-03-06, 7:37 PM #65
Did anyone see the TV show of that? I have a couple episodes on VHS. I haven't looked at them in forever. They're pretty funny though.
2006-03-06, 7:47 PM #66
I'm going to name my character Visser One and do my best to win control of the entire universe. And yes, it is scary that I remembered how to spell Ellimist as well.

I liked Animorphs, I want to re-read them now. But I'm afraid I will get all sad from nostalgia.

Especially that one where they were on some planet with slanty buildings. Had a vivid dream of that one.

But yeah, I am going to get me some Hork-Bajir or however they are spelled.

Man, if I can't make a hork-bajir, I'm suing.

Haha, and the TV show was so horrible. The only good thing about it was Shawn Ashmore (HOT).

Hmm, I wonder if I can find a copy of the video game...

NO! I just checked in my closet and I think we gave all of the books away... :(
