Awesome.

I'm pretty sure this is already been discussed in massassi, buggered if I can find the thread though...
Oh, and yours has a much better title =]

This is stupid... if the U.S. was really serious about this, they wouldn't be bragging about it... I sense the extinction of sharks has moved to a much sooner date.
Nothing to see here, move along.

Sharks are one of the oldest creatures on the planet - evolution has seen nothing surpass the shark in the seas. They have been around far longer than we have, and frankly I expect them (as a species) to outlive humanity by a loooong way.

I would really love to see some ACTUAL proof of that, and I don't mean words on a web page, I mean proof.

Anything that would wipe us out would probably wipe out the rest of the life on the planet.

Yeah, let's not ruin Martyn's thread.

At least, I won't.

Burnsauce. :p (in reply to fastgamerr's first post)

And BTW, what are these sharks going to "spy" on, anyways? Submarines? They'll just get caught up in the rotor and shredded to pieces. Shark is good. Fried shark.

I don't want people sending to me a webpage that just says "Sharks existed millions of years ago..." but it doesn't tell you why... it just says it like its a fact.

Gold, this is my thread, and the point about sharks and evolution is not up for debate - if you want to argue with me or in fact all of massassi, and the rest of the world that is neither deluded or ignorant, then by all means do it in another thread.

This thread is for laser beam jokes, mansecks, and the idea of shark chunks floating behind submarines. It might even be for talking about whether or not the sharks can be controlled to the point of not eating, or doing dances. It is not for the ongoing circular argument between you and common sense.

Right, who mansecksed me? Was it FGR? Excellent.

Try this, go to a library and look at books. They're this thing that was there for hundreds of years before the internet - something a little bit like evolution but not.

Books contain useful and enlightening information about things such as the sciences, history and funny cartoons.

Then why the hell did you mention evolution in the first ****ing place?

Because you said that they might go extinct. My point was that sharks were here long before us, and they'll probably be here long after. It's not a hard concept to grasp.

I see no relation between the two concepts, and you are still saying things as if they are facts.

Now that that's settled, is anyone else concerned about the effect budget cuts could have on this program? I don't want to end up with spy sea bass instead of sharks.

Ignoring the painful ignorance in this thread, the sharks would be used to monitor submarines and surface ships. The amazing thing is they don't have to be close to either to detect them. This is the next step in using sharks; we've been training and using them, dolphins, and whales to patrol waters and eliminate enemy divers, now we can completely control them and monitor boarts with them like we have been with dolphins, but the sharks can remain practically completely stealth.

I've never tried sea bass, but I'd be mighty upset if I did try it and got some electrodes stuck in my teeth.

Do we have to manually control them to catch and eat fish, or will they do that on their own?

What's scary is DARPA made me think of MGS too.

I think you just stop controlling them for a little bit every day and let them get on with it - or maybe natural instincts still work over the control...

dunno really :)

Define fact. Many of the things we have thought were facts turn out not to be true. Would you be all that surprised if scientists were move the shark's time frame around a bit? We don't have any really accurate way of determining how long they've existed. That being said, who the heck cares, unless of course, this is turning into some sort of ID vs. Evolution debate.

I hope they've at least considered the problem. After all, we wouldn't want our very expensive technosharks expiring of starvation.

It won't be a 24-7 control over these things, it'll be like a UAV program in a way, instead of a unmanned aircraft, it's a shark. When the missions over, the shark returns to its holding craft/facility and they feed it there. Of course, the beautiful thing about these things is that unlike UAVs, they don't have to come back to refuel, you can cut transmission to them, and they'll go find food in the area while another shark takes its place in the mission, and rotate between sharks to monitor something.

I agree. This thread should continue on as the spirit of the locked 4th page of the "Evolution..." thread. We will not be suppressed!

I sense the opposite. Now that they have an actual use for sharks they'll be working on breeding programs and so forth.
