To do with Science, And light,

Welll ive been thinking and thought about these questions

1. If black serfaces absorb all light, wouldn't they eventually not be able to absorb any more?

2. If light is particles and waves wouldn't the particles build up and eventually do something destructive?

So any thoughts?

1: Nothings broked yet.
2: Maybe light will do something destructive to you someday. We can only hope.

PS: Take physical science.

To fully answer your questions, I would have to resort to quantum mechanics. Have you taken quantum mechanics before?
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

The simple, non-quantum answer is that as a black object absorbs light in the visible range, it heats up and emits light at other frequencies (infrared). If the light shining on it is powerful enough, it won't be able to radiate energy away as fast as it's recieving it, and it will become hot enough to glow red. This glowing is still the same phenomenon, only now you can see it. As it gets hotter, the black object will eventually melt or burn.

This is actually the entire premise behind cutting lasers.

Why is the sky blue?

If gravity pulls on everything, why don't clouds fall?

Where do babies come from?

If the moon is made of cheese, why dont we solve world hunger?

That made me laugh

Oh and another

if a TOTTALY black object absorbs ALL of the light it recieves. Would we be ableto see it?

...yes?
2006-03-21, 5:05 PM #11
You can still see it anyways... just look for a black void :\

At least it's not a poll.

2006-03-21, 5:06 PM #12
Well obviously we wouldn't be able to see any reflected/transmitted light from it, but we'd still be able to see the contrast between it and other non-black objects.

Not that there's such thing as a perfectly black object, of course.

Luckily we can see the lack of something, and figure it out from there.

We would see black. What do you think black is.

(Another spiffy question)

What do you 'see' if you have no eyes? Blackness or what?

How about that, we're doing quantum mechanics in school right now. I don't understand it fully though.
DO NOT WANT.

If Muon particles act as a catalyst for Helium 3 fusion....

.... then HOW AWESOME IS RUTHVEN!?!???
Code:

elseif(getThingFlags(source) & 0x4){
  do other babe}
else{

*Runs Python Script*

The returned variable for Ruthy's awesomeness is as followed: Negetive two (-2).

However, I'd like to tell you that if Ruthy were to RELEASE his Stargate mod, he would gain an extra 254,000 awesome points. But that would be cheating the system, and I just can't do that. *wink*
I had a blog. It sucked.

answer for question 2 - there is only a finite amount of energy and matter in the universe. more particles of light aren't coming from anywhere. they're all here already.
2006-03-21, 6:50 PM #24
SIMPLE ANSWER: Light is absorbed but is converted and released into heat energy. If we "kept" the light within our cells, we would glow in the dark. That's as about as simple as I can put it. Anyone have anything to clarify?

[QUOTE=Darth Evad]answer for question 2 - there is only a finite amount of energy and matter in the universe. more particles of light aren't coming from anywhere. they're all here already.[/QUOTE]

Not really. It's "made" by matter <-> energy conversion.

I put "made" in quotations since it's not really made, but I can't think of a better word for it (Matter/energy is neither created or destroyed law).
2006-03-21, 10:21 PM #31
Matter is cool because it's like highly concentrated energy.

1 ounce of matter contains as much energy as burning 19,937,541 US gallons of gasoline.

it would eventualy heat up and glow, but we could still see it before that happened, because there would be a pitch black shape surrounded by things we can see.

I looked at Jon's response and didn't mention anything on what I learned from meteorology(maybe I didn't read it carefully enough). If I remeber correctly, clouds don't fall due to the opposite force called the Pressure Gradient Force. PGF

Are you really seeing the black hole, or are you just seeing the effects of the black hole?

Any object that is TRUE black, you would not be able to see. You would see its silhouette. The light that would normally be reflected back at you in the form of light is reflected in the form of heat.

............right?
