Oblivioners : Behold a LOD Fix!

Good news everyone who run Oblivion. No more need for the buggy .ini tweak to fix the distance land texture LOD.

Get this small mod instead, it looks world better than even the .ini!

LOD Land Texture Replacement

Does that wreak havoc with your framerate?

<- found Oblivion for $36.99 + s/h

<- is debating
woot!

Its actually better than the .ini trick on the FPS.

Basically, the guy took a 1024x1024 texture and made a 2048x2048. Of course make sure your Gpu can support it (I *think* all DX9 cards do support it). I'd say framerate impact is 1-5 fps at tops.

People like Rob and myself will squeal of joy :)

I find that turning off distant land actually looks infinately better, to me.

Now..those mountains in the distance...if you keep walking..and walking..and walking..will you eventually get there?

this game is insane.

  do her}
elseif(getThingFlags(source) & 0x4){
  do other babe}
else{
  do a dude}

That's like saying JK has awesome graphics if you don't play it.

Note the "to me" on the end of his post.

HE thinks it looks better, even though his opinion might seem weird.
I had a blog. It sucked.

It looks better on the 360 anyway. :P
Wikissassi sucks.

That's quite possibly the worst analogy I have ever heard.

Not really. The land distance is what makes the game so sweet. Having land disapear would bug me.

Have you even tried turning it off?

It doesn't "disappear", it does view fog like in Morrowind. I think it looks VERY good, and it doesn't lag as much.

I turned it off once...better framerate, but there was tons of popup too.

Odd, because I never see popup, unless you count loading areas, which happens no matter what setting is on.

The game has hoorendous pop up if you turn down the slider. I mean, you end up running into objects before they actually show up on your screen.

Technically no; HDTVs only run at 1080i, tops. I'm playing at 1280p.
Wikissassi sucks.

Doesn't make a difference since the game doesn't support that tv resolution. And besides, with the easy tweaks and LOD mods that come out for the PC, our game already looks much better than the xbox maxed out.

There aren't many who can play it maxed out, but Rob and I can. And it doesn't look better than xbox. The ONLY think you boxers have over us right now is Antialiasing and HDR, but you hardly notice the lack of AA if you are running at 1600x1200 like I am.

I'm not one to battle out the PC and Xbox, but I'm not one to hear stupid fanboyism either. Its not a matter of taste in this case, its a matter of technicalities. Maxed out Oblivion on PC and Oblivion on Xbox 360 are equal save for AA & HDR. And we can tweak it to make it look better, removing the normal maps' grid-like compression, and making better, more detailed LOD maps.

Fixed. 1080p is the highest any HDTV technically goes. Unless you count LCD TVs

Why would you turn the slider down though? :(

I did, and it does. Blue fog.

To each his own, really. :)

The whole fog of war business annoys me when its supposed to be a beautiful clear day. I make up for it with distant pop-ups. Besides, I set the loadgriddepth or whatever farther away (from 5 to 7, since beyond that it bugs up) so pop-ups are more distant, and it looks wonderful with this new patch.

Some guy released a 4098x4098 LOD map and its amazing but it killed my framerate in certain areas of the world, sadly.

There is no way to make this game's distance visuals perfect, you'll always get some pop-ups here and there, I got whole patches of grass popping up now and again. But with tweaks and testing you can optimize it. If you like the fog, you can have it, if you like distance like me, you can have it.

Blue fog may look good, but it doesn't look real. IRL it kicks in at about 20-25 miles, not 20 feet.

The same could be said about 2D sprite trees :p

Those sprite trees are amazing. I'm still in awe every time I look at them.

I'm not really talking about smog or fog, I'm talking about the atmospherics that cause distant mountains and objects to appear blue.

Unless Cyrrodil is synonomous to London, I don't think that really applies here.

Emon is thinking of London back when Sherlock Holmes was the resident pimp.

Its changed now.

The point is that a lot of fog is not unrealistic. Perhaps not 20 feet of visibility (that's what, super low detail?) but a few hundred.

Although I now notice that Freelancer was referring specifically to blue fog, which is more noticable at very long distances where you can see the accumulation of blue light.

But it doesn't matter, nothing in the game is realistic anyway.

A lot of fog IS unrealistic--for extended periods of time. When I go outside, I have a view distance of MILES in each direction (Kansas). Not to mention, you're usually looking at landscape, not a city. Your logic is flawed.
