This is not Hollywood attempting to capitalize. If you did research about the movie (you didn't), you would know it was being produced by three small time, independant production companies when Universal agreed to finance anything which they could not afford. Now naturally, we can assume that Universal financed the movie in the later stages to capitalize off of it, but we cannot say that the movie was initially created to make money only. Many movies are made for the sake of art and there is nothing wrong with charging admission. Do you know why that's true? Making movies is hard. It takes a long time, a lot of people, and a lot of work. Should they work for free just so you can take the money out of Hollywood? When an artist shows his/her work at a gallery should there be no admission?

You guys are pissed now. Just wait 'til Mr. Stone debuts WTC later this year. That should really piss you off.

Because they have recordings of cell phone calls that passengers made to family members and to other authorities where they told various people what was happening. There also have the cockpit voice recorder, which recorded what was going on in the cockpit. So, to say that no one knows what happened on the plane is not accurate.

Um, no. They showed a meadow with a black 'spot'. No wreck, or even some pieces of it. At least, as far as I know. That's what's all the fuzz is about...

As far as the word 'emo' goes, I concur. :p

You can count on this to become some kind of Independance Day-like 'God Bless America' emo drama type of thing. (No offense intended towards Americans whatsoever - but I"m sure you catch my drift.) No thanks.

I'm not going to see it to be entertained, I'm going to see it to be moved.

Hopefully it will rise to the task, and not be what you all are currently assuming it is.

Simply put:

It's taking a real life tragedy, still fresh in the majority of minds, and making a profit off of it.

"The Nation" Magazine is making a profit from 9/11. Fox News is making a profit from 9/11. Bill O'Reilly is making a profit from 9/11. Green Day is making a profit from 9/11. Everyone who sells stuff discussing 9/11 is making a profit from 9/11. It's not a new thing. :p

not to mention all those peopel that decided to start selling flags right after 9/11.

taking advantage of patriotism to make money.

The minds behind the film, much more likely than not, wanted to make the film as a memorial or commemoration or just a compelling rendition of the story. Yeah, it'll make money, and I'm sure they had that in mind... but unless they really cared about the story, they wouldn't make it. No one who had no previous interest in the event would say:

"Which topic is the biggest cash cow? Hmm, 9/11."

These people would recognize as readily, if not as vehemently, as some of you do that it is a touchy subject. The only people who would really want to make the film aren't likely to be doing it for money reasons. There are so many other safer bets that could earn just as much.

Then you should be screaming at Steven Speilberg for making Schnidler's list because he took the story of a man that lots of people should know about, made a movie about it and profited from it. Quit being so damn selective with your angst.

Workers made a profit off of cleaning up the debris from the attacks.

Firefighters, surgeons, paramedics, in some cases police officers and soldiers, or other government employees, make a profit off of saving and preserving lives, and people from all of those fields certainly made a profit from the attacks themselves.

Writers make a profit off of their work. Fiction and not.

The media made a huge profit from informing us of 9/11 as it happened.

Everyone that HAS a job makes a profit from said job, and as such, a lot of people make a profit as a result of major tragedies.

How is this any different? Others have already posted evidence that this movie's purpose IS NOT to just cash in on the 9/11 name, but to genuinely impact people's lives. Profit is not the primary motivation, so how is profit the problem? And why shouldn't they make a profit when everyone else does?
Moo.

Screw those firefighters. I bet they were just working because of all overtime they got!

I'm being blatantly sarcastic here.

I don't have any moral objections about people making a movie about 9/11. I'm just afraid it's going to suck immensely. What bothers me more is that noone actually knows what happened, but people might actually start taking whatever they show in that movie for the truth.

Wow. I can't believe I agree with Bill every time he speaks now. I remember a time when we disagreed on everything.

Have you ever, you know, heard of art? Of course, hollywood has a lot of stupid movies with big budgets and over-the-top special effects that cash in on several big-events in national history. That doesn't at all mean this isn't another Band of Brothers, or maybe a JFK? Those pieces of art made LOTS of people money, but it is apparent that, through their making, an artist was living out his vision of those historical events.

And people *****ing about taste in this thread are cute. We've had this debate a million times on massassi: Keep pretending that humor has no place in "the most serious things ever." The box cutters joke was one of Obi's best.

But like you said, we don't know what really happened. Although you are right that certain people will take this for truth, what if this is truth. There are just a bunch of "what ifs" in this situation, and the companies creating this were just taking this viewpoint. Although, I will say most movies that I've seen that commerate people that have died usually turn out very well and I for one want to see how this movie is.

That pretty much kills any logical argument you may have had.

Seriously, stop saying that. There was a huge comission on it and they pretty much determined what happened. Exactly, 100% accurate details, no, but they have a pretty good idea what happened.

HOLLYWOOD SHOULD MAKE MORE PORN MOVIES!

I think we can all agree on that.

elseif(getThingFlags(source) & 0x4){

else{
  do a dude}
