Do you use steam?
2006-04-28, 10:13 PM #1
I just got Half-Life + TFC and now i have this Steam... Thing... So damn ANNOYING!

Anyway do you use it?
2006-04-28, 10:15 PM #2
I have it, but I haven't been playing any Steam games for about 4 months.
Pissed Off?

I use it.

And now I'm waiting for Brian to post here and rant about steam.
2006-04-28, 10:19 PM #5
Yeah, I use it. but only if I play a Source-y game.

Of if I'm making broccoli. Mmm. Broccoli.

I used it til all the games I own that use the source engine (hl2, hl2:dm, Cs:S, hl:S, DoD:s, hl2:LC) quit working and everything valve told me to do didn't fix it.

Steam itself still works just fine.
I have valve's entire back catolog that came with my hl2 purchase and all of those still work.
just that sinkin' source engine decided it didn't like me.

Yeah, when's Brian typical post going to come!

Yeah, have a nice list in Steam.

Codename Gordon
Condition Zero
Condition Zero: Deleted Scenes
Counter-Strike
Coutner-Strike: Source
Dawinia Demo
Day of Defeat
Day of Defeat: Source
Deathmatch Classic
Half-Life
Half-Life 2
Half-Life 2: Deathmatch
Half-Life 2: Lost Coast
Half-Life: Blue Shift
Half-Life: Source
Opposing Force
Red Orchestra
Ricochet
Team Fortress Classic
Dodgeball Alpha 6 (must upgrade to 7)
Half-Life 2: Capture the Flag
International Online Soccer
Pirates, Vikings, and Knights
Plan of Attack
The Ship

That's why I like Steam, easy to update Valve games without having to find a patch, plus it allows me to have list of games in one spot to load quickly. And I've never had steam break on me, so it's good for me!

I think you can still play the original half life without it minus some updates possibly, but because the list of games that use it is rather long, it's easier just to say "do you use steam?" or say "do you use any of these games [insert list here]?"

I met Masq on my brother's clan's CS server yesterday night :). It was cool, but he left soon because he lacked skill, I think.

Hate loathe and despise it. Avoid it whenever possible. Thank God the only game I have the NEEDS Steam is the bloody HL2 demo. It annoys me to no end that I have to go through some other stupid program aside from an operating system just to play a game. And when said program desides to say, *insert choice explicative here* itself, I have no way to PLAY my game at all.

That was kinda my point. Or are you trying to find out if there are people purposely not playing those games because they use steam?

What phoenix said.
I will never buy a game that requires me to have an internet conection for the single player part.
What if Valve goes out of business? Then you're pretty ****ed.

You can run steam in offline mode
2006-04-29, 7:17 AM #15
Well it magically started working again on my computer...so I use it, even though I don't.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.
2006-04-29, 7:57 AM #16
What makes you think though that if by chance Valve was going out of business, they would not release a simple patch that allows SP to be played offline?
2006-04-29, 8:14 AM #17
I think he might be referering to non-steam down, a great program that lets you play single player Valve games without using steam. When I got a copy of HL2, but didn'y have an internet connection, I used it, great program, recommened it to anyone.

Only problem I have is that offline mode doesn't work. But other than that I'm happy with it... much easier to keep my games up-to-date.

That's why you need non-steam down. Offline mode stops working like first time you connect to internet on a PC (it did for me anyways).

Works fine for me even after I've connected.

Steams ports are blocked at University so I can't play online, still lets me play single player as long as I remember to setup offline mode each time before I leave for uni.

That's a lot of games. Yeah the regular steam-down is crap and ILLEGAL. However their "non" counterpart does the trick. Tell me do you SHARE an account? I mean, you gotta be really loving Valve to buy all those games...

I haven't played any Valve game in a long time, and even then it was a mod for CS (Digital Paintball). Didn't like what they did on the last update, didn't feel like reinstalling, so it idled on my system for almost a year before I uninstalled Steam a week or so ago.

The Silver Pack was $60 and included every Valve game on Steam, including HL2, HL:Source, and DoD:Source. I know several other Massassians bought this pack when it was available and can confirm this.

Not to mention most of those you see are FREE third-party mods.

And I don't share my account with anyone except my little brother, who never uses it anyway, and if he gets me VAC banned I get my parents to make him buy me a new account, problem solved.

I went hardcore and got the Gold! However, I did not win the trip to Valve's office...:( However, got the other stuff in mail...

I think they start preloading for HL2: Episode One next week, so I'll be getting that for sure too.

Looking forward to it. Although it's funny that after seeing Saving Private Ryan again recently, the thought crossed my mind that even the most popular FPS's are still not interactive enough. It's still the case of shooting things with a purpose that falls in the background.

As the only games I have played since Spring 2005 are CS:S, which I still play on the weekends, and HL2, I use Steam. I am fond of the automatic updates and the news that comes every Friday. Although people have complaints, I have never had a problem with it.

Steam works really well for me. It is nice to have all of the dev tools right there and everything be so easily updated.

Why don't they tell us what is going on with DoD:S though! All we hear about in the updates is Red Orchestra and SiN. From their news it seems like DoD:S just stopped being developed.

I've never gotten why everyone hates Steam, I've never had any problems with it.

Mind you I don't usually use it because Half-life 2 and anything that runs on it's engine is just a heap of ****.
nope.
2006-04-29, 12:50 PM #36
I have no problems using Steam so I'm not complaining, although the auto patching bit does get annoying sometimes. I never understood why people hate it so much and I don't think I ever will because I just don't see any evidence to do so.

Steam is nice. I like having everything there. Also, offline mode has never failed to work for me. You just have to make sure you have the "Remember my password" box checked the last time you log in online. I've been playing a bit of DoD:S and doing some work on a mod for class. I wish I could say I love their SDK as much as Steam itself, but I can't. There is really bad documentation for some of the errors that come up, such as the "Failed to Allocate touchlink_t" error I keep getting. No documentation on that one at all.

I had trouble installing HL2 off the CDs, and Steam helped me out since an error occured on my last CD.

So... I honestly can't be mad at Steam.
