My Mom thinks that this is standard. I've always done one space after the sentence. What do ya'll do?

Two spaces is correct.

Actually, one space is proper for correct typography.

Maybe for printed material, but extra whitespace gets stripped in HTML. Typing two spaces would be redundant.

we learned in some random office apps class that in letter writing you're supposed to use two, but i cant be arsed, so i just use one.

Coding? The same applies to every post you make on this forum. The same would apply to almost any forum or blog.

I use 2, but I'm pretty sure any non-stone age word processor takes care of it for you.

That's true. I was thinking along the lines of writing a paper. I double-tap the space bar with out even thinking about it.

I remember something about the two spaces, but I always put one. I think the double-space thing is old-fashioned, like the Imperial system.

Two spaces is incorrect.

Here's a quote from my copy of "Thinking With Type" by Ellen Lupton.

Quote:
Don't put two spaces between sentences. They leave an ugly gap.
Although writers persist in putting double spaces between sentences (a habit often learned in high school), all such spaces must be purged from a manuscript when it is set in type.

Nope. They don't. My version of Office 2000 sure doesn't. In fact, Office, I do believe, does the exact OPPOSITE. If you give it two spaces after a sentance, it auto corrects it to be one.

I use one. I have always used one. And I always WILL use one. Even when told to do otherwise, I use one, because no one really looks THAT closely at spaces between sentances. And if they do, I think they're just being anal. One space between sentances has never gotten me in trouble.

Double space = teh loose. One space = teh win.

After a bit of googling I can say that I get an A (or at least not an F) in English after all.
Every document I found so far tells you that two spaces are a relict from the monospaced typewriter ages. Modern fonts have a variable width, which applies to spaces as well. So it's not the office programs or DTP programs that'll do all the correct spacing, it's the fonts that do that.

How can using the double space be archaic when typewriters are a relatively new invention in human history?

I never use single spaces after sentances. Come to think of it, I never use "sentances" either.

ar·cha·ic ( P ) Pronunciation Key (är-kk) also ar·cha·i·cal (--kl)
adj.

1. also Archaic Of, relating to, or characteristic of a much earlier, often more primitive period, especially one that develops into a classical stage of civilization: an archaic bronze statuette; Archaic Greece.
2. No longer current or applicable; antiquated: archaic laws.

Uh... there isn't exactly a time period that has to lapse before something is considered archaic. double-spacing is no longer applicable (see definition) because we have these cool things called fonts. Which means a space character can be any width you want.

Two spaces. Always have, always will. The gap it leaves is not 'ugly'. It is a thing of beauty and finesse.

I use two underscores after each sentence.__It makes the spacing more obvious, and easier to see where one sentence ends and the next begins.__My english teachers didn't seem to like it though, for some reason...__It was probably because they were jealous they didn't think of it first.__

In all my english classes they've told me one. I used to do two but don't anymore.
