Do you still watch cartoons?
2006-05-20, 7:34 AM #1
My college roommate watches cartoons such as Spongebob Squarepants. A significant number of people I know watch anime. I always thought that kids cartoons leave at some point in one's maturity. What do you guys think?
2006-05-20, 7:51 AM #2
There are a good quantity of anime that are NOT child cartoons. Some are, but I sure as hell wouldn't let my children watch Berserk, Onegai Teacher, Eurotsekedodgie (sp? and note that I wouldn't watch that one myself, lol) etc.

But you sure as hell wont catch me watching Sponge Bob

I'd watch cartoons if they hadn't gone to crap lately. The only one these days I'll sit and watch is Kim Possible.

The Simpsons, Family Guy, Futurama, Samurai Jack, Happy Tree Friends, Harvey Birdman...

I dunno what constitutes 'mature' cartoons, but I watch all of the above regularly.

I'd watch cartoons if I had time. It was Christmas when I last got to sit in front of the TV for most of the day. And that was only because I was sick. *whine*whine*whine*

Yeah. I never stopped watching cartoons as such, only cartoons made for kids. It's not like there's something wrong with those cartoons (except for Sponge Bob - there IS something wrong with that show), but from an adult's point of view they may be compromised, because many things aren't allowed (or good) for children, and on the other hand adults and kids have somewhat different interests (like Jepman said).

Is the Snorks still on TV? Whenever I think of cartoons I think of that show for some reason. I think that's because I would be up at 5 in the morning and it was the only thing on.

I think the content being presented, rather than the method of presentation, could be considered as having some degree of maturity. There's nothing inherently "immature" about cartoons as a media, children have just been the key demographic for so long that it's assumed they're strictly for children.

Cartoons don't have a corner on this, other examples might be crayons, construction paper, toys/figurines, comics, etc. They all have the potential to present what we'd consider mature content (Matisse used construction paper for example), they just traditionally don't.

That said, there's a lot of crap out there. Poorly made Saturday cartoons where playing with cards, toys, or other commodities being advertised has been integrated into the actual narrative makes me want to retch. Why bother with commercials when 90% of your program is poorly veiled product placement?

cartoons, comics and toys/figurines are all awesome and i still partake in them all, well, toys, i mostly go for the macfarlane collections, they are so awesome.

80% of all anime is definately not child oriented. Hell, it's not even child-safe.

Yes, I still watch cartoons. Pretty much any one I used to watch, from Rugrats to Trigun.

I don't see why maturity has anything to do with abandoning anything that one finds pleasure in. That seems to be a generally held belief, and it's annoying. Why does someone need to stop watching cartoons to be mature? Is there any reasoning to back that up?

Maturity is about knowing how to act in certain social situations and deal with others in a proper manner, and to be a critical and independent thinker. The definition does not include: does not play with Legos or action figures, does not like cartoons anymore, does not read comics, hell, does not find fart jokes funny anymore. I like how Progresso soup had a commercial on how much more "adult" they were than Campbells. That was their argument; that a soup was an indicator of maturity. It seems to me people have ideas as ludicrous as that in their heads, that being an adult means you have to shove a giant tree up your back end and force yourself to change your tastes.

Not really anymore. I usually watch Family Guy, and occasionally South Park. I could watch the Looney Toons for hours, though. And alot of the old Nick Toons.

I watch Spongebob Squarepants, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, South Park, Batman until it got crappy, Samurai Jack, Samurai Chlampoo, Naruto, Paranoia Agent, InuYasha, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Family Guy, American Dad, Cowboy Beebop, FLCL, used to Lupin the Third, Trigun, used to Big O, The Boondocks, used to The Brak Show, Futurama, Harvy Birdman, Home Movies, Moral Orel, Minoriteam, The Oblongs, Perfect Hair Forever, Sealab: 2021, used to Squidbillies, used to Super Milk Chan.

No particular order.

I watch South Park on occasion. I like the parodies on current events.

The maturity deals with the target audience. For instance, Rugrats targets little kids. It is not necessarily immature to watch it, but it doesn't fit the viewer.

It seems like you were making a judgment call on your roommate based on what he watched. And maybe people can find humor something at any age. There are underlying messages here that you couldn't pick up before either, as was said before. Also, there's nothing wrong by not having the set opinion and tastes of your demographic; you can't say it doesn't fit the viewer, you should say it doesn't fit the demographic. Viewers are highly variable.

Cartoons were originally designed with adults in mind. There continue to be great cartoons with humor that adults can appreciate.

I used to like Johnny Bravo. And Dexter's Lab. But I think both those shows died terribly.

Mostly Family Guy now. Never seen one ep. of the Simpsons.

Usually, I'm not a big fan of kid cartoons or Nick and things like that.

I just happened to watch a show called Catscratch on Nick a few weeks back.

I thought it was actually pretty funny.

Rugrats for kids? There are many references to adult movies and adult jokes hidden in the show.

I agree 100%. While I don't buy into the whole "if you like X, you're not that mature" deal, I still don't tell people the things I like. Too many strange looks, although I suspect that has more to do the my work environment than anything else.

Cartoons are the only thing I enjoy watching these days. Although I do miss the old style "disney" type cartoons. Bright colours, witty punch lines etc. The newer cartoons are either an annoying blend of bad cg or bland colouring. I miss Ducktales, Talespin and especially Darkwing Duck. Such an awesome show.
2006-05-20, 5:03 PM #39
I watch the mature stuff such as Family Guy, American Dad, South Park, Futurama, etc.

I do enjoy kids cartoons but nothing modern. Pretty much what I grew up with I prefer like Doug, Ducktales, Talespin, etc., modern kids cartoons are too dumb.

I watch Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad, South Park, and Futurama.

The one cartoon that I'm surprised no one mentioned was Ren and Stimpy. I loved that show! Also miss Rocko and Invader Zim.
