Finland won this year's Eurovision song contest with this. Our first victory in the 40 years we've participated.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

I'm used to better shows by Lordi really, though I think it's about time someone shed some new light on the Eurovision songfestival.
2006-05-21, 7:39 AM #3
In celebration, me and my friend opened a 12-pack the second it was official and drank it between us in about 30 minutes :D
And they bloody even broke the all-time score record!
Yeah, you stay here and take life seriously. I'll go and have some fun.

I am absolutely astonished!

I've been vaguely meaning to make a thread about this in recent weeks to discuss it with you Finns.. on xfm (alternative radio station I listen to), one of the DJs heard about Lordi entering a while ago and started this mad campaign to get you to win. I didn't think for a second you actually would though (nothing against Lordi - it's just a statement about Eurovision!)

I didn't get to see it as I was out last night, but I'm well chuffed for you guys, congrats! Kroko - you should have seen me when I got your text, I was running around telling everyone!

(btw, did you see the abomination that was our entry? it makes me want to scoop out my eardrums with a rusty spoon)

I should have put a bet on it, I was fairly certain they'd win from the moment I knew they were in the competition.

I saw it last night! Sheer brilliance. I was cheering for finland the whole way through.

And maevie, I agree about our entry :( It was awful. He rapped with an american accent too. Not only that, but a 30 something guy with a load of schoolgirls? Yeah. That gives a brilliant image of our country too.

Anyway, Lordi winning was awsome.

They won because they were the only rock song so they got 100% of the vote from the metal/rock fans across europe. The pop vote was spread amongst all the other entries so no 1 pop song could get enough votes.

Crazy europeans.

Europe is metal, it's just that most Brits haven't realised it yet.

I really hope people don't just see this as a gimmick though, because there are must better acts than Lordi and Eurovision could actually start getting some credibility for once.

Somehow I didn't expect us to win at all, but when we did...

Quite funky.

Better sound quality video clip:

Also, the Russian guy - gayness unlimited. Maybe I have skewed judgement because I hate him so much, though. Gah. We have GOOD music too. How sad.

Best Eurovision ever. This is the first time that the right song won. I voted for them 8)

I knew they would win when I saw them on the semi on Thursday.

If you were in the chat last night you would've seen myself and Spe rooting for Finland and Lithuania.

[Seriously, "We are the winners of Eurovision"; how could that not win?
nope.

Can't say it wasn't a shock. It was thrilling to watch the vote counting, as points just kept piling up. There were only a few countries that didn't give any points to Finland, and 7 or so that gave the full 12 points. It was pretty funny that after a certain point when you saw Finland wasn't among the receivers of 1-6 points, you were almost relieved knowing it would be among the three recipients of the top scores.

That was probobly the most retarded musical production I've ever seen.
The music - Sucks, the costumes - suck. Horrible. That was the most horrible thing I've ever seen.

Did that we are the winners song sound an awful lot like Andrew WK - We want fun in a lot of places or was it just me?

Can't say, I've never really listened to Andrew WK.

Where is Zlad and his huge hit "Electronik Supersonik"?

Oh my God, that sucked balls.

But congrats to the Finns for winning anyway.

That was the second-funniest thing I've seen all day. Awesome.
2006-05-21, 11:20 AM #26
The most fun thing about Lordi is that the whole act basically is a jab at silly "tr00 blackmetal" bands. Even the lyrics reflect it, come to think of it.

Got yourself some greasepaint,
Set of white and black,
All you got was laughter,
And Gene Simmons on your back.

..I'll stop now.

Yes
2006-05-21, 1:40 PM #32
Next year they ought to send Sonata Arctica.

Just watch as next year everybody copies it, the UK will send Iron Maiden, Ireland will send Flogging Molly, Holland will send in Within Temptation and Germany will take a shot with Blind Guardian. *nod* Mark my words.

2006-05-21, 1:54 PM #33
Germany apparently also had In Extremo in the running for Eurovision.

Also, Holland should send better than Within Temptation. Epica or After Forever preferrably.
2006-05-21, 1:56 PM #34
Good point, Within Temp's live performances tend to suck vocal wise. But they were the first dutch metal group that popped to mind.

2006-05-21, 1:56 PM #35
but!!!

but....

metal bands who take themselves seriously will just suck at eurovision.

you dont really think they just won on music alone, right?

and i say keep it pop, the comical cheese of eurovision is beauty.
2006-05-21, 2:07 PM #36
That's another idea, everyone should attempt to try and upstage Lithuania's act.
Seishun da!
2006-05-21, 2:18 PM #37
I don't think it gets much sillier than a rubber demon playing a keyboard.
2006-05-21, 2:20 PM #38
The whole reason they won was because it was a cheesy gimmick.

If we get more bands like that from now on it'll just ruin it.
nope.
2006-05-21, 2:30 PM #39
Oh I think it's too late for that already anyway. On the other hand, I thought that in general this edition was better than that of previous ones. Maybe there's a little shimmer of hope left for Eurosong anyway... or not.
