I obtained a copy of CS1 when it was new from Purdue for $99. Different universities negotiate different deals with vendors. I had to pay $13 for any Microsoft product at Purdue, but Ball State students only paid $5. There is no universal pricing, just what the vendor on average will negotiate.

What's wrong with The Gimp?
There are some things I miss when I work with Photoshop that The Gimp has and there are some things I miss when I work with The Gimp that Photoshop has. And those are only some quirks in the handling.
The only real thing I noticed missing in The Gimp is color management. But I don't need it that often.
