Fascinating Chart

I can't believe how wildly successful WoW is. This chart really cements it. You keep hearing about EQ and stuff, but that's small beans compared to WoW and Lineage. Also, I simply cannot believe how successful RuneScape is, beating out high-powered MMORPGs like EQ, CoH, and Final Fantasy.

The world's pocketbooks do not agree with you. ;) Check this one out: WoW's rate of growth appears to have hit the smallest of snags as late. But it's damn impressive.

No CS on there.

-Last I heard it was still in the lead. How has WoW affected that?

I guess CS isn't considered a MMOG then.

I don't really consider it one either.

God I hate that Runescape game. Not the game itself, mind you. What I hated was the stupid little kids who would come into the library back when I worked there and argue over who gets one of the three crappy computers next so they could play it. And then complained constantly about how it was laggy - the three computers, plus the two that were for library staff use, all shared the same 56k internet connection.

I guess they were at least being more social than the average MMORPG player; leaving their houses and what not. But damn if it didn't get annoying.

Indeed. Back when I played Runescape (Yes, I actually did. It was fun as long as you didn't talk to others and kept in your own group of real life friends) I never went to a library or something to play. If I ever did go to a public place to play a game, then I'd let my seat go for someone who needs the computer to look for a book, or something.

cool.

FFXI FTW.

(BTW, how many of those WoW accounts are being used by one person/group of people.)

I've played FFXI, EQ, CoH, and WoW, and I can honestly say, that out of all of those.... they're all different.

Each game is tailored to a specific audience. No one is a "best" game, I enjoy WoW the most because scheduled instances fit better into my schedule then FFXI's random *** HNM system (Although, getting the claim, beating out 6 other linkshells on the King Behemoth pop is the best feeling I've gotten from a MMO ever). FFXI was probally the most hardcore MMO out there, with CoH being the most casual MMO, and EQ(2) being somewhere in between. WoW just has the best market share because it allows people to get up to level 60 easily, then enjoy the game the way they want to play. So many people drop out of FFXI at 50 or 60, because leveling takes DAYS of grinding, which just isnt fun.

Oh, and SWG sucks.

Umm, Ragnarok Online isn't on there, and it definately should be, it's bigger than most of the games on there.

i got painfully bored of WoW by level 47, it feels more like work than fun, the whole thing is a pissing contest to see who has the best gear and stats. its ****ing dull.
2006-05-31, 6:26 AM #17
Killing razorgore on our first attempt ever on sunday was one of the most exhilerating experiences ever, and well worth the (semi)grind that I had to go through to get to 60.

Why do you have to be addicted to a game to enjoy it to it's fullest extent?

In my guild, we have raids every day of the week, but your attendence in one raid does not effect your attendence in any other raids. We have a signup system that posts all events on friday afternoon, and then we add events to the schedule as the week goes on. All the raids are the same time every week, so you know exactly when and how long raids will be. Knowing your schedule in advance allows you to play as much or as little as you want, depending on your real life schedule. For instance, I almost never raid on weekdays, due to school and such. I try to fit it in on weekends, but if I can't no biggie. Our guild is a casual raiding guild, and yet we are progressing faster than any guild on our server ever has, and I'm having more fun in this guild in WoW than any other MMO I've ever played, playing much less, and having my playtime be much more structured.

Yeah, don't mind me. I'm just jaded against MMORPGs and WoW specifically because my roomate for the past two semesters farmed nonstop, stayed in the room 24/7, slept through most of the day and stayed up all night, and refused to bathe because he was 'too busy' playing, among other things, WoW.

nope.

Gris, I'm in a very casual raiding guild. If you don't make it to a raid, or don't want to come, don't sweat it.

I'm not addicted :p

WoW is extremely over rated. It doesn't deserve even half of the popularity it has right now. It is a fun game, in it's own right, but it gets painfully boring at the end game. I bet if it weren't have been for the warcraft name, the game wouldn't have been as successful as it is right now.

Oh, as for the lineage series, while I haven't played it before, I bet the only reason it's so successful because enormous sex appeal the game has. Who wouldn't want to run around in a half-naked, clad-wearing dark elf?

"Clad-wearing"?

The only MMO I've ever been interested in was SWG, and then a bunch of Massassi people said how terrible it was.

Hahaha, no it's not. Sorry Matty, but it doesn't have anything on those games.

Yeah, it's not surprising at all that WoW is at the position it is now. It had 1 million subscribers within the first month--they were expecting 650,000 MAXIMUM. Blizzard didn't realize how much people were looking forward to it.

Haha, by coincidence I just saw graphs like that but before they May 2006 analysis. WoW is dominating; I thought I saw it at just 36% share before. Seems like SWG is on the decline, as it had almost 3% share at one time.

Blizzard still is rolling in the cash.
2006-05-31, 11:38 AM #30
Yoshi has a point. There's plenty of instances to go to and advances in gear you can get at level 60.

2006-05-31, 11:43 AM #31
i wouldnt say 99% though :p

but generally, i dunno about MMORGSs anymore.

WoW pissed me off, simply because it wasnt fun in the same way games like SMW were, it was all just a race for the best stats.

i want to try CoH/CoV but i'm afraid it'll be the same, the concept is awesome, but i'm fearing everyone in it will simply be looking to have the most powerful character possible instead of just having fun playing the game.
2006-05-31, 11:47 AM #32

CoH/V is nothing like WoW. Most people are just there to have fun or gain badges and some enhancements and so forth. It's the most amount of fun i've had in a game with a team based system in it. SFs FTW!
nope.
2006-05-31, 12:33 PM #33
CoH is cool because it elminates the "pssing contest" min-makers, to the largest extent possible (they'll always be there to some extent). Because there's no gear. At first, I thought that would be a huge mistake, but it makes CoH really fun. It feels more like an arcade beat-um-up than other MMORPGs as a result, plus it's more casualy because you don't need to spend X ours farming Y mobs to get Z gear just to be competetive.

Awesome. :)

Another interesting graph:

.

<3 that graph.

Also: As to why the number of WoW subscriptions has drooped slightly: Think about how many subscriptions they have. The raw number of people who are going to buy it is going way down, so more people are jumping on, and that leaves less people that can jump on. I wouldn't really call it a snag when they're dominating the market like that.

You're right about WoW sucking at end game.

I can't speak for everyone, but I plan to get it soon -- not for sex appeal, but the whole atmosphere its self.

No it's not...it's perfectly fine. It's the best of the current genre of MMORPGs that exist. Its endgame is intensely fun--if you have a clan. It doesn't get "painfully boring" unless you're trying to solo.

And Lineage is successful because it's even worse than Everquest about grinding, it's got great graphics, and the Koreans have been playing it for years. I guarantee you 95% of those account numbers for Lineage are from Koreans.
