Windows Vista Beta 2!!!

As far as JG's reply on vista:

A. I think that WEP issue is actually Microsoft enforcing the strict ruling on WEP passcodes, in that they ARE supposed to be 5 or 13, not a range. (This is how my linksys WAP works) If you want to do any password, use WPA, which is not only more secure, but you can do any length.
B. The setting to turn off all the stupid permissions crap is in User Accounts under control panel. (Turn classic view on to find it faster)
C. My Audigy 2 Value works fine... although I have heard other ones not working. I did have to get drivers off of creative's site though.
D. Does anyone else get insane CPU usage and lag with the aero theme on?
2006-06-12, 8:01 AM #42
Oh. I didn't know that was a standard on WEP passcodes. Even then I find that...really odd.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

I'm starting to upload images, and will slowly add more...

Source games seem to work perfectly for me now. Not sure if it's the new drivers with the new card I have or not.

Aero Glass does give me 5-10% CPU usage, but I had to hack it on. Vista thought it was too good for me. You said you got a better WinSAT rating than me tho, so that's rather odd.

If I were you I'd try setting dwm.exe's priority to below normal or idle and seeing if that helps. It should perk up everything else at the expense of glass "lag" when dragging.

You guys install it as separate partitions or wipe XP out then put in Vista?

So far NWN doesn't work in Vista. I hear sound, can even click on things but I can't see ****. Also nVidia's Vista drivers only support 2xAF

Edit: Haha! My display driver crashed. And it was able to recover. That was cool. Also hit Win+Tab for...

You know, after seeing those pictures of Areo... I hate it. EVERY window does that diffuse translucent thing? ALL the way around? Not just the title bar? ... It'd give me a royal headache....

I'll wait to see it in person before passing final judgement, but right now, the only thing it's better than is the default WinXP theme.

In fact, I had to hack it on, though I think I said that already...

I actually like the glass, stuff updates behind it and it looks pretty neat. Win+Tab works right too (you see through the glass to the next thumbnail).

First thing I'm going to code for Windows Vista: App that showcases glass effects in the client area of an app, AND has a useful function: It will add Steam to Vista's Game Explorer (Start | All Programs | Games | Games). Assuming I can figure out the new API for it.

Also I did more tests with Source... Source engine games seem to work fine, at least with my 6800XT.

I think most game problems are likely to be driver issues.

Naw..... REALLY!? Gosh... I would've NEVER bloody thought that. I mean, I'd have to be a total MORON not to realize I could turn it OFF just like ANY OTHER THEME.

Jesus. I'm NOT *****ing. I'm stating my opinion. God damn people. It's a bloody theme. I KNOW I CAN TURN IT OFF.

MY POINT WAS THAT AS IT STANDS RIGHT NOW IT ISN'T THAT MUCH BETTER THAN THE STOCK XP THEME.

Calm down man. You can turn it off you know. Left click on the desktop, then properties, themes.

Bloody hell, the installation went fine but when I try to boot it it gives me a nice 'Winload.exe is corrupt' problem and the startup repair thing it suggests to me doesn't work, yay! :)

No solutions for the problem either, it seems. Oh well, I'll leave it on my HD for a while, if it can be solved..

Vista Beta 2: Don't get attached to your boot records. I am the only OS you will ever need, even though I'm Beta and question you every single action like you are three years old.

Gah! Do you have any idea how hard it is to set up XP 64 and all the programs you need properly?

And, yes, I have tried fixmbr and fixboot, thanks for the help.

I installed Vista Beta 2 last night on a 35 GB partition...it's pretty cool so far. The dialogs are indeed annoying, especially since it seems to cause my second CRT to reset video modes every time.

Brad was telling me that Aero caused his CPU to be at 70% usage all the time. That's got to be some kind of bug, because mine's at 1% at most when idle. Aero isn't causing me any noticable slowdowns. And my hardware is like a third as fast as his.
