I'd recommend the NASA Opportunity, or the attractively priced Spirit, both in good condition, far outperforming expectations on the road!

With good solar shielding, fold-up lander capability, a 2.6 meter ejectable cruise stage, and a heat shielded aeroshell, the 2003 model is well equipped for the highway, and for off-road.

Gas generators, onboard computers and cameras, airbags, and retrorockets all come standard. Spirit and Opportunity have identical suites of five scientific instruments: a panoramic camera provided by JPL; a miniature thermal emission spectrometer from Arizona State University, Tempe; a Moessbauer spectrometer from the Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, Germany; an alpha particle X-ray spectrometer from Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, also in Mainz, Germany; and a micro-spectrum Analyzer from JPL. Additional packages feature Honeybee Robotics rock abrasion tools.

Price comparisons and safety specifications available on http://marsrovers.jpg.nasa.gov and http://athena.cornell.edu.

I was only coming in to inquire as to precisely how they found DNA "samplings" on Mars, considering there aren't any instruments there that can detect it.

How do you just have $25,000 to spend? That's nuts. Spend half of that and save the rest.

I refuse to contribute to this thread for two reasons.

First you had my hopes up about the DNA thing.

And Second, who in their right mind would refuse a toyota??? Toyota's are the best working class cars around.

Punk.

Spend $5,000 on a car that will last you for 10-15 years if you take good care of it and spend the other $20,000 paying off existing debts or investing in your future. A $25,000 car is nothing more than a status symbol. I have a 1993 Mazda Protege that is only valued at around $850-$1,000 and since I take care of it and use it properly, it'll probably last me another 3-5 years at least. A new car, or even an expensive car, is one of the worst ways to spend your hard-earned.

You did good to tag that as opinion Mentat. While I agree with you that an expensive car is not a good investment, many people don't see it as an investment. I personally would love to some day own a BMW. Why should I spend $100,000 on a BMW when I can buy a perfectly good-running car for $5000 - $10,000? I'll tell you why. Because I'll feel damn cool driving a BMW. It is a status symbol. It is luxury. The definition of luxury is something that's more than what you need. It's not just the comfort of heated leather seats and steering wheels, it's the comfort of knowing you're driving around in a car that will turn heads.

I do find it rediculous when people buy cars they can't afford and justify it by calling it an "investment" or saying they need "reliable transportation" but at the same time I recognize that a luxury car exists to provide luxury to those who can afford it. If drizzt has put together $25,000 that he doesn't need for anything else, and wants to spend it on a car that will make him feel good about himself, then more power to him. Now granted he could buy a $5000 car and put the rest into a long-term bond or something, but then in the meantime he's driving a $5000 car. A lot of people that go through life scrimpinga nd saving end up dying sad men and women because they never enjoyed life. They were too busy being servants to their finances. In reality, your finances should be a servant to you.

There is something to be said for frugality, but the best spenders are people who can recognize when frugality is needed, and when it isn't.

The Toyata Matrix is just about the most bang (or non-bang) you're going to get for your buck.

It's like ~$13,000, gets great mileage, and is REALLY RELIABLE.

My mother uses hers to deliver autoparts in, and it's been working out really great.

It is a pretty sissy little car though. Lousy acceleration. But it'll save you money.
2006-06-19, 10:53 PM #27
soo.. you have $25k cash or you getting a loan.. don't forget to count how much your insurance is going to be..

jumping into a huge car debt is not really a good idea.. I shopped for 4 months before I found a car and I'm very happy with my selection. 2000 honda civic, 56k miles, $7700. great gas mileage (insurance isnt cheap because I have 13 insurance points) and I know its going to be reliable (3rd Honda)

Buy a vintage car that will appreciate in value, rather than depreciate. Sell it after 4 years of driving it, and buy another. Magically, you'll make money off of your vehicals.

Especially with 25000 dollars worth of classic car. That'll be sexy. Save some cash for insurance on that puppy, though.

I don't think so.

You must factor in the increasing cost of oil.

I dont want a toyota because I dont like the style of their cars I've driven one for a year as my first car and it now has 166,000 miles. So I have 25k to spend on a new one. Dont worry about debts or insurance or anything and suggest some cool cars! I like things like nissan 350z, acura tl, bmw i series stuff, ect.

READ WHAT I SAID!

Even if you don't make money, you'll be a lot closer to breaking even then a car that DEpreciates. Not to mention, classic cars beat the crap out of your new BS cars.

Because not only do they make awesome cars, they also manufacture jet fighters. Now I'm not saying you should go join the Norwegian Air Force, but don't you like the idea of driving a car made by a company that usual makes vehicles powered by jet propulsion? :psyduck:
