I think I just had a mindgasm. You know, where your mind gets so overloaded with awesome that it just explodes all over your cranium?

I have some AMD 1.01ghz processor, 384mb SD RAM, and A GEFORCE 2 MX200!

I'm playing HL2 on low settings at 800x600. Getting 15fps at explosions, other than that I get 20 in crowded areas and 30+ otherwise. I LOVE this game. LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE! AND I GET GOOD QUALITY FRAME RATE (for me)!

I've had it for a year or so, but it didn't work well so I threw it off. I updated drivers and stuff tonight, tried again, Oh My God.

I'm near the end of the airboat part, and damn that was awesome. I just...LOVE THE GAME. I can't say enough good about it. I enjoy it so much, yet it doesn't seem to be that amazing from a glance. I dunno what's appealing to me, but something just rubbed me right (hehe) and my mind just secreted juices all over my skull, and I love it.

Post your amazing game impressions or HL2 first time playings.

I agree. Despite all the crap I gave HL2 initially, it has really grown on me. I'm sure you can dig up that 5-page thread I started about how much I hated HL2. :P

Also, did I mention that it's 100x better because during the load times I play New Super Mario Bros. on my DS? Yeah, it's awesome on top of awesome on top of godliness.

I can't wait to get my new computer and play on higher visual settings.

If you'd been paying attention to any threads he's posted, you'd know he's well on his way towards it. I think you even posted in one or two of his threads.

I actually don't care for it. The weapons suck, the enemies are uninteresting (the only interesting part was Ravenholm, but only in short bursts--gravity gun gets old), the pace is sloooooooooooow, and it just sucks up until near the end where things FINALLY start rolling. Unfortunately, that's about an hour or so before the ending.

I found the game to be very dull. As soon as I saw the big tower in the sky, the only thing I was interested in was getting to the big tower in the sky, the rest of the game was just an infuriating delay preventing me achieving my goal. The vehicle parts were far too long and not actually fun at all. The game went from being awful to being excellent at the point when you start to enter the tower. The ending was excellent because it made me laugh.

Dort, it's alright. If he didn't like the game, he didn't like the game. That's fine with me. I asked for your first HL2 play through experiences, he didn't like it.

And yes, I am saving for a new computer. I should have the money in a few weeks to buy the computer, not much time left on this MX200.

I really like the game because I haven't played a recent FPS on this thing since early - mid 2004 at the latest. I didn't expect it to run, and I'm enjoying just for that reason.

You can find multiple resources online that would help you make a game run on a computer that it would not normally run on.

Just made it to Ravenholm. I know most people love this part, but so far I'd prefer the dark canals and manhacks or the airboat.

Man, the parts of that with the energetic music and the long stretches with guys repelling down that you just shoot through...awesome.

I hated the airboat.

I quit when I goat to Ravenholm and somehow the games AI just deactivated. Nothing would more anymore. Its still sitting on my computer.

I found Half Life 2 boring and overrated. Sure, it was pretty, but so is every other shooter in the last 2 years. Gameplay should NOT be forced by the creators, but fostered by the game. The AI in HL2 only became challenging when they overwhelmed you in sheer numbers, NOT in skill or ability. Enemies retreat to their set "safe" spot regardless of the situation. The gravity gun is a gimmick. Albiet, it's a much longer lasting gimmick than most, but once the twenty minutes of fun the Gravity Gun possesses is up, you're left with Valve's only method of original gameplay: Boring and monkey-stupid gravity gun puzzles. This being the ONLY change up in gameplay besides the long sequence of scripted vehical rides, the game is absolutely and wholly linear. I really thought that videogames got over the whole singular and straightforeward path a LONG time ago. There ARE a few very unique spots in the game where you can move around freely in order to fight some endboss, but that's it. A glorified boss area is NOT the equality to a game like F.E.A.R.'s absolutely free and open living environment. The MOMENT you start having fun in the game is when you're powerplaying in the tower, and that's over just before you start platforming your way to the top of the tower. Please stop shining valve's 1999 level design, gameplay, and AI in it's 2005 graphics shell. There are many games made BEFORE and after HL2 that do what it's trying to do a thousand times better.

I'm sure you've heard me say this before, but I have to say it again: Farcry.

Kirby, every game is somewhat linear. F.E.A.R. was just as linear as HL2. They both had a lot of scripted scenes and events. Every game has an objective to get to, and it doesn't matter if you can take a long route or a short route, each game has a story line it needs to put out. Stop complaining. The gravity gun wasn't a gimmick at all. You used it MANY times in the game. All of Ravenholm you had to use it due to lack of ammo, and for a bajillion puzzles you had to use it. You complain that games are boring and all the same, then HL2 brings in the gravity gun and you ignore it as a gimmick. There is no making you happy.
Think while it's still legal.

I agree with you on a couple points about the gravity gun(it does get really old after time) and linear parts but for some reason I still find it addictive. But by today's standards, linearity(sp?) should be gone in some games.

Far Cry on the other hand, although had great gameplay, has its share of problems. The difference in difficulties can be very steep as you go up(I'm afraid to try realisitic) and I'm usually pretty good at FPS. Also the AI can sometimes have a very easy time seeing you when they shouldn't. But the most dissapointing thing was the end: After defeating the Trigants, it's barely a challenge against the soldiers with some well placed grenades and explosives and Doytle(sp?) can be just blown up as well without him ever even seeing you. And this was also on a fairly challenging setting.
[EDIT] Dort: True that all FPS's follow up to a certain point, but being able to move around on different paths to achieve an objective is always loads of fun.
No sig.
2006-06-20, 1:05 PM #30
The AI in the game was fine, they just have low HP and damage. Pump those up and you'll see how smart it really is.

The gravity gun is just as useful as you make it to be. You can do as much damage with it as you can with just about any other weapon (and that's not even taking into account the fact that you can redirect grenades with it).

I don't understand how you can compare FEAR to HL2 as an example of non-linearity and unscriptedness. FEAR was every bit as linear as HL2 in terms of gameplay, and FEAR was just as scripted.

I'm tired of this attitude that just because you don't like a game means that it sucks and that everyone who likes it is wrong. Your opinion is no more important than anyone else's, and the majority actually enjoys the game. Get over yourself and come to terms with that.
Moo.

Got the Gravity Gun, and while I do like it, I think it is a bit of a gimmick. I don't enjoy messing with it aside from chopping a zombie in half.

I'm also going to say I'd much prefer to use that first pistol you got to trying to a'splode all the enemies with Gravity Gun shots. I loved that first pistol, it just seemed to be the coolest thing. It had realistic sounds, it looked cool, the sites glowed, I just loved the gun.

Ah well. Back to HL2 again.

Oh thank the great one I'm not the only one thinking that.

And Zloc, amen to that. I loved the first pistol and the first machine gun you get. Matter of fact, I loved the pistols in FEAR also. Akimbo ftw

I loved it so much that when I saw it as an airsoft gun at Big5 I had to buy it.

Here's some pics of it.

Also, if you like the game, you absolutely must-must-MUST read this online comic: www.hlcomic.com. However, I would suggest you read it after you beat the game, as it may spoil certain parts of the game. Be sure to click on 'Hide/show notes' and read those.
