No?

Then they're useless.

Ahh, I remember quite a few years ago when people were afraid that getting past something like 200 or 300 gigs on a hard drive was going to be almost impossible. Then perpendicular recording and now stuff like this came along...

200-300? I remember an article in a magazine or something saying that ~80gb was as high as they could go with platters on drives..or something to that effect. I forget.
woot!

To be honest, at best we're going to see a cap of somewhere in the 10TB region, currently, unless the holographic **** goes through. We need to find something more effective than a steel plate to store our data soon. I estimate within the next year or two an alternative form of storage will be found.

And while you guys may go "Wow, 10TB! I'll never use that much data." Remember the "Computers will never need more than 640k of RAM" comment Mr. Gates made a while back.

well, let's make flash memory more reliable as permanent storage. or implement some kind of optical storage system that's more effective.
obviously, metal and magnets are a VERY limited means of storing data. it's been around for how long, now?

good on seagate for trying something new, though.

Flash memory is perfectly reliable as permanent storage--it's the costs that's the problem.

People have always been worried about just how much data can be crammed into platters, it's just the limit they make up keeps increasing. Of course there will be some point where they won't be able to figure a new method and will have to stop somewhere. It's just like the problem with silicon and transistor leakage in smaller manufacturing processes. They find new ways to lower leakage, but at some point they are gonna have to stop and move to a new type of substrate. Lots of stuff's already moved to synthetic diamond, among other alternatives.

Germanium, I think, or Gallium, is the next alternative to Silicon. I think it's Germanium.

Yeah, I remember that as one of the many alternatives there are. We discussed a whole crapload of them in a processor design seminar I had back during my freshman year. Damn I miss that class, it was fun and an easy A... Of course it was only one credit, bleh.

Didn't you see that Outer Limits episode? They'll turn you into a giant jellyfish!

Unless the nanites give me super-strength, heal me at will, give me a built-in flashlight, leech the life out of organic matter, or stop incoming missles, then I'm not interested.

And no, that's just something one of my friends says all the time.

But nice try at trying to degrade my post in any way you find possible Jon. I must say though, that it's not quite as original as it used to be. Get a new hobby.

All right let's not go into a large derail.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

A) That in no way disproves what Jon said. In fact it's evidence that it's true.

B) Maybe if multiple people have noticed it, there is some truth there.

Find: Last post on thread.
Replace: Jon with Freelancer.

Now then, people who are actually interested in debating/discussing the technology...anyone?

So anything that can't make you walk is useless? That's a funny way of looking at things.

(The answer is yes. Nanobots can make you walk.)

sounds like a good direction to go, especially considering the fact that my friend has a half terabyte external drive and only a few years ago my friend thought his brand new, expensive 20gb drive would be all he ever needed.

Only thing is, with words in the report like "leaked out", it feels to me that it might take a while before its released to the general market.... ah well, heres hoping its soon, i want it to get cheaper asap.

I don't doubt that it's worth it but some of the projects are extremely sketchy.

i tell you what isnt worth the time/effort...

things we'll never see in our lifespan... seriously

we need to leave something dirty for them bastards, i bet once they're born, all they do is cry, then whine as teenagers... i mean, our parents did the same, we may as well doom them little ****ers.

Aha, I enjoyed Prey. Just remember that self-sustaining nanotechnology hides in caves.
2006-07-01, 9:28 PM #39
Self-sustaining nanotechnology lives freakin' everywhere. Bacteria lol.

I also enjoyed "Prey". Perhaps a bit alarmist but it'll make a good action movie (as long as they don't screw it up like they did with "Timeline").

You need a new hobby. Like getting the hell off these forums and stop filling it with your bull****. Hell, you couldn't even stay unbanned from SA for more than a week. Your posts are as dumb as imsoshort's, they're as unfunny as SAJN_Master's, and they're as vitriolic as... well, mine. For Christ's sake, this entire thread was created to continue an argument with someone who doesn't even visit this forum! Dumb, unfunny and vitriolic right there! What the hell do you think you are doing?!

What the hell?
